New York State Medical Aid in Dying: Implementation Experience at Four Months

Completion of this class will result in the receipt of two (2) continuing education hours.

This is the second class in the series on Medical Aid in Dying in NY State. It begins with a very brief review of the New York Public Health Law Article 28-F (effective 8-5-26). The implementation experience at four months will be reviewed, including progress on workforce education and training across professions, including social work, medicine, nursing and psychology. A focus on the place of MAID in the palliative and end-of-life care continuum will be discussed, including an explanation of the requirement that patients be informed of their rights to palliative care and hospice. Experience of decision making and the request process will be reviewed. The social work role in addressing family conflict will be addressed. Issues relevant to hospice and facility setting contexts will be discussed. Challenges encountered to date based upon available knowledge and data and strategies that may address such challenges will also be covered.
