A Virtual Tour of Woodlawn Cemetery with David Herszenson

One of the many Hebrew terms describing a cemetery is bet mo’ed le-khol ḥai (“the house appointed for all living” from a verse in Job 30:23). In this webinar, linked to our walking tours focusing on Jewish Life in the Bronx, we will explore a slice of American Jewish history preserved in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, which counts among its permanent residents scions of American Jewish life: Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, composer Irving Berlin, the Lehman family, and many others.

David Herszenson is a physician living in the Bronx and a trained tour guide with a love of the Bronx and its different neighborhoods. He has been doing walking tours of the Jewish sites in the Bronx for Fordham’s Center for Jewish Studies in the last three years as part of Fordham’s Bronx Jewish History Project.
