“Psychoanalyzing American Jews: Max Weinreich, YIVO, and the Yiddish Unconscious”
It is well known that Max Weinreich, co-founder of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, produced a psychoanalytic study of Polish Jewish youth.
This lecture by Naomi Seidman (with response by Seth Aronson, PsyD) will focus rather on his never-published psychoanalysis of American Jews in their relation to YIVO and Yiddish, which he spoke of as the “collective unconscious” of the Jewish American psyche.
Naomi Seidman is the Chancellor Jackman Professor of the Arts in the Department for the Study of Religion and the director of the Centre for Diaspora and Transnational Studies at the University of Toronto. She is the author of five books and a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship.
Seth Aronson, Psy.D. is fellow, director of admissions, and training and supervising analyst at the William Alanson White Institute. He is program chair for the American Psychoanalytic Association meetings and on the faculty of Yeshivat Chovevei Torah.
