Fordham was well represented at Super Bowl XLII in Glendale, Ariz. Not only did alumnus Bob Papa (CBA ’86), WFAN’s voice of the New York Giants, announce the Super Bowl for New York-area broadcast (see related story), but undergraduates Ryan Ruocco and Bobby Coyle hosted their weekly WFUV radio show, One on One, live from Phoenix on Feb. 2.
Papa was a guest on the show, as were former Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi, Adam Schefter of the NFL Network and Chris Gasper, the Patriots’ beat reporter for the Boston Globe. Several proud WFUV alumni also stopped by, including New York Yankees’ television announcer Michael Kay, WFAN engineer Chris Majkowski and Paul Dottino, who covers the Giants for ESPN Radio.
Ruocco and Coyle were among the hundreds of credentialed media representatives from around the world who converged on Phoenix for Super Bowl week. They broadcast from an area known as Radio Row, which was housed in the basement of the Phoenix Convention Center.
“We were the only 21-year-olds there, and everyone complimented us on how professional we were,” Ruocco said. “We’re very proud of that. Bob Ahrens (WFUV’s executive sports producer) prepares us very well.”
Ruocco, a senior, is the lead play-by-play broadcaster for Fordham basketball and football. Coyle, a junior, provides color commentary for football. He was the color commentator for WNBC’s high-definition broadcast of the Fordham-Holy Cross game on Nov. 3.
One on One, which started in 1974, is New York’s longest running sports call-in show.
