Bronx, N.Y. (January 5, 2015) – The Fordham University cross country/track and field program lost a young alumnus on Jan. 4th with the untimely death of Michael Walsh, a 2011 Fordham College at Rose Hill graduate and four-year member of the cross country and track and field teams.
Walsh was killed when struck by a snow plow while jogging early on Sunday in his hometown of Torrington, Connecticut.
“We are truly saddened to hear of the unfortunate accident that took Michael Walsh’s life,” said Fordham cross country/track and field head coach Tom Dewey. “Michael was a tremendous teammate and a valuable member of our program for four years. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
A four-year Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll recipient who was recently accepted into medical school according to the Republican-American, Walsh finished 17th in the Coaches Race at the 2009 IC4A Cross Country Championship, his top finish at the prestigious event. On the track, he competed in the 800m and 1500m as well as with various relay teams for the Rams.
Walsh arrived at Fordham after a stellar career at St. Paul Catholic High School in Bristol, Connecticut, where he was named Rookie of the Year for outdoor track in 2005 and won the Coach’s Award for cross country in 2005 and MVP honors for the squad in 2006. He was also the recipient of the Coach’s Award for indoor track in 2006 and was named Best in Track for the outdoor team in 2007. Walsh was awarded the Fr. Saunders Memorial Scholar-Athlete Award three times for highest GPA by a student-athlete.
