Reading Religion in Popular Culture
Tuesday, October 25, 2016, 6 – 8 p.m.
A conversation with Margaret Lyons, television critic and writer for The New York Times “Watching” section. Ms. Lyons majored in religious studies at the University of Chicago, and she has since gone on to carve out a funny, socially engaged, and increasingly influential voice in arts and entertainment journalism. She previously worked at New York Magazine’s Vulture, Entertainment Weekly, Time Out Chicago, and Chicagoist, and her work has appeared in Slate, Elle, Glamour, and other publications. Kathryn Reklis, Assistant Professor of Theology at Fordham, will moderate a conversation with Ms. Lyons about how she got into journalism, how her background in theology and religious studies has shaped her distinctive perspective on popular culture, and how writing about television has emerged as a significant medium of cultural commentary and critique.
