David Rosenkranz, PhD, ARTS AND SCIENCES, professor of economics, presented a working paper, “Ask Your Doctor: Information Aggregation and the Patient-Hospice Match,” at the American Society of Health Economists’ Annual Research Meeting in June and at Swarthmore College in July. He presented another working paper, “Health Care Spending on the Margin: Evidence from Hospice,” at the Population Aging Research Center Retreat at the University of Pennsylvania in May.
Joshua Schrier, PhD, ARTS AND SCIENCES, Kim B. and Stephen E. Bepler Professor of Chemistry, gave a number of invited talks this summer: “Can Large Language Models Do Chemistry Research?” at a CUNY Graduate Center workshop on May 8; “Using Artificial Intelligence to Improve Liquid-Liquid Extraction of Lanthanides (and Actinides)” at the American Chemical Society’s Middle Atlantic Regional Meeting held May 17 to 19 in Hershey, Pennsylvania; and “Large Language Models for Materials Synthesis and Extraction” at the NIST Artificial Intelligence for Materials Science Workshop held June 16 to 17 in Gaithersburg, Maryland. He also participated in a plenary panel on “Workforce Development for AI-Enabled Materials Science” at the Materials Genome Initiative Principal Investigator Workshop held Aug. 10 to 11 in Washington, D.C. Additionally, he was part of a team led by Johns Hopkins University that was awarded a $20 million grant by the National Science Foundation to develop AI-powered cloud laboratories to study metals under extreme conditions.
Christiana Zenner, PhD, ARTS AND SCIENCES, associate professor of theology, examines Pope Francis’s encyclical on ecology through an intersectional feminist, anti-colonial lens in her new book, Beyond Laudato Si’: Ecotheology, Equitable Futures, and the Papal Turn to the Earth! The book, published July 8 by Fordham University Press, also elucidates key concepts and issues in Catholic ecotheology and ethics.
