Nushelle de Silva, Ph.D., ARTS AND SCIENCES, assistant professor of art history, received an American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Fellowship for the 2025-2026 academic year. The fellowship, awarded to 62 scholars nationwide, recognizes excellence in humanities and social science research. De Silva will be using the fellowship to work on her first book, tentatively titled Conveying Culture: The Control and Care of Art in Transit. 

John Hanc, ARTS AND SCIENCES, adjunct professor of English, won first prize for business writing this summer in the 2025 American Society of Journalists and Authors Annual Writing Awards for his Newsday feature “Hampton Jitney Turns 50.” 

Ki-Eun Jang, Ph.D., ARTS AND SCIENCES, assistant professor of theology, published “The Buried Abimelech Tradition in Judges 10:1: A Case of Literary Doubling” in April in the journal Vetus Testamentum and “The Problems of Sons of Gods, Daughters of Humans, and the Nephilim in Genesis 6:1–4: A Reassessment,” in July in the journal Religions.

Professor Jang was also selected this summer as a 2025–2026 Media Fellow with the Asian Pacific American Religions Research Initiative.

Jacob F. H. Smith, Ph.D., ARTS AND SCIENCES, assistant professor of political science, published his second book this summer: Waves of Discontent: Electoral Volatility, Public Policymaking, and the Health of American Democracy (University of Michigan Press, 2025).
