Fordham will host a bilingual poetry reading and discussion on Wednesday, April 21, at its Lincoln Center campus.
The event, which will include readings in Italian and English, will take place from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in room 309 of the Lowenstein Center. It also will feature a discussion of the new issue of the scholarly journal, Italian Poetry Review (IPR).
“Fordham is becoming a wonderful place for poetry,” said Alessandro Polcri, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, who organized the event along with Joseph Perricone, Ph.D., professor of Italian and comparative literature. “Not only do we have Heather Dubrow, the Boyd Chair in Poetic Imagination, but we have poets-in-residence and we produce the Journal of Italian Translation. It makes Fordham quite strong in poetry. It’s fantastic.”
Polcri is the associate editor of IPR, a pluri-lingual journal of creativity and criticism. The peer-reviewed publication, put out by Columbia University’s Department of Italian, its Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America and Fordham University, appears once a year and is published in Florence, Italy.
Paolo Valesio, Ph.D., the Giuseppe Ungaretti Professor of Italian Literature at Columbia University, is the editor in chief of IPR, which is “dedicated to the critical reception and the pluri-linguistic diffusion of Italian poetry in a broad comparative context,” according to its website.
The April 21 poetry reading and discussion, which is sponsored by Fordham and Columbia University in collaboration with Poets Out Loud, will include a panel of scholars from Fordham, Columbia, the University of Houston and the Università di Bologna (Italy).
Participants from international and national universities will give poetry readings. In addition, students from Fordham’s Department of Theatre will read some of the English translations.
The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, the literary studies program and arts and sciences faculty at Fordham are sponsoring the event.
