Head Strength, Speed and Conditioning Coach

WHAT HE DOES
Jason is responsible for coordinating the design and implementation of physical training, performance enhancement and injury prevention programs for all Fordham student athletes. He personally supervises half of the sports, while his assistant works with the other half.

BACKGROUND
He was a junior hockey player and safety on the football team at the University of Manitoba, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science. He then worked as the assistant strength and conditioning coach for men’s football and basketball at the University of Kansas. He earned a master’s degree in exercise science and sports psychology from KU.

UNIQUE NEEDS
“Each sport has its own unique needs in terms of conditioning and speed work. For example, athletes in each sport use a different energy system. Football and basketball is going to be more anaerobic, as opposed to cross country, which is totally aerobic.”

SCIENCE OF SPEED
“Our speed training program focuses on pure power development as well as the mechanics of speed. Small changes in arm positions while running can make big differences in decreasing times. In other situations, teaching foot and hip placement in planting and cutting will enhance an athlete’s speed.”

FUN ON THE JOB
“It’s fun being part of a program that motivates athletes to perform at their highest level. We have a real team atmosphere here, and it’s great working with college athletes. The Walsh Training Facility is nice and perfect for our needs.

OUTSIDE INTERESTS
“My life revolves around athletics a lot, so I follow sports outside of Fordham as well. In addition to being a sports junkie, I enjoy outdoor recreational activities like hiking.”
