The Fordham University cross country/track and field program lost another young alumnus this past week with the untimely death of Jose Benitez, a 2006 Fordham College at Rose Hill graduate and four-year member of the cross country and track and field teams.

Following his time at Fordham, Benitez became a police officer and was most recently stationed in the Bronx.

“We are truly saddened to hear of Jose Benitez’s untimely passing,” said Fordham cross country/track and field head coach Tom Dewey. “Jose was a tremendous teammate, a former cross country captain, and a valuable member of our program for four years. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

A former captain of the cross country team, Benitez competed in both cross country and track, primarily in the 3,000 and 5,000 meter events.  He arrived at Fordham after a strong career at Xavier High School, where he was an All-City performer in cross country and set school records in the 1,500 meters, 4×800 relay, and distance medley relay.
