March 3 was Senior Day for the Fordham University’s Dan Blaine and Dominic Osei, and the Rams’ junior class decided to send them out in style. Three juniors scored in double figures for the Rams—led by Marcus Stout with a game-high 27 points—to lead Fordham to an 80-73 Atlantic 10 win over Temple University in the Rose Hill Gymnasium in the regular season finale for both squads. Blaine and Osei were honored with a pregame ceremony and presented with framed photographs.
The win clinched a best-ever fifth seed for Fordham in the Atlantic 10 Championships in Atlantic City, N.J.
The ten Atlantic 10 wins are the most for a Fordham team since the Rams joined the conference in 1995-96, while the 17 overall wins are the most for Fordham since the 1991-92 squad went 18-13, Fordham’s last winning season prior to this year.
Upon the conclusion of the season, two Rams were honored by the Atlantic 10 Conference: junior Bryant Dunston was named Second Team All-Conference and junior Marcus Stout was named Honorable Mention All-Conference.
On the year, Dunston, who was also named Second Team All-District by the NABC, averaged14.5 points per game, second best on the team and 16th in the Atlantic 10, along with a team-best 7.4 rebounds per game, sixth best in the conference. He also registered a team-high 66 blocks and shot 53.4 percent (134-251) from the field.
Over his three-year career, Dunston has accumulated 1,353 career points, good for ninth on the Fordham all-time scoring list, and 698 career rebounds, good for a tenth-place tie on the school’s all-time rebounding list.
Stout finished the regular season averaging a team-high 15.5 points per game while leading the team in three-pointers made (72) and steals (47), and ranked among the Atlantic 10 leaders in scoring, three-point field goals and steals.
Over his three-year career, Stout has scored 1,246 points, leaping over Michael Haynes, Darryl Brown and Tony McIntosh and into 13th on the all-time scoring list. He also is among the all-time leaders in three-pointers made, hitting 184 in his career, good for fourth on the all-time list.
Indoor Track
After setting numerous records over her first two years at Fordham, senior Kerstin Greene isn’t slowing down. This winter, Greene won the pentathlon competition at the 2007 ECAC Indoor Track & Field Championships with an NCAA provisional qualifying score of 4031. She shattered her former school record, set in 2005, of 3818 in the event and will now compete at the 2007 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 9-10 in Fayetteville, Ark.
Greene won the pentathlon long jump competition, with a leap of 19′ 2.5″, again shattering her former school record of 18′ 11.75″ set earlier this winter. She also tied for first in the high jump with a jump of 5′ 8″, breaking her former school record of 5′ 7″, and she took second in the shot put with a toss of 37′ 9.5″.
Greene took seventh in the other two events of the pentathlon, the 60m hurdles (9.01) and the 800m (2:21.82).
Prior to the ECACs, Greene was equally impressive in the Atlantic 10 Championships, being named the 2007 Field Performer of the Year after winning the triple jump event with an Atlantic 10-record of 40′ 9″. She also earned Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors in the long jump and high jump events, placing second in the long jump with a school record leap of 18′ 11 1/2″, while clearing 5′ 7″ in the high jump for runner-up status.
On the men’s side, the Fordham 4×800 relay team of Clifton Hilario, Peter Glackin, Ryan Serkes and Matthew Lowenthal crossed the line in 7:48.89, besting the runners-up, La Salle University, by 0.87 seconds to earn First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors.
Also receiving All-Conference accolades for the Rams was Matt DiBuono, who earned Second Team honors by placing second in the weight with a throw of 55′ 7.5″.
Swimming
The Fordham University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams wrapped up competition at the 2007 Atlantic 10 Championships. The women took third place in the team competition, Fordham’s best-ever finish, while the men placed sixth. The previous best for the Fordham women were fourth place showings in 2001 and 2003.
Leading the way for the women was freshman Caitlin Napoli, who received First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors, winning the 200 freestyle while earning Second Team honors by taking second in the 100 backstroke and 200 butterfly. Sophomore Ashley Ukleja earned All-A-10 accolades by placing second in the 1650 freestyle.
Earning All-Conference honors for the men was Ryan Coombs, who earned First Team honors by winning the 500 free while also taking home Second Team accolades for a second place showing in the 200 free. For his exploits, Coombs was named Most Outstanding Rookie of the Meet.
Women’s Basketball
