NEW YORK: John Cosgrove, Ph.D., associate dean at Fordham University’s Graduate School of Social Service, received the Trailblazer Award from the New Jersey Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers for his extensive service work in troubled countries. Cosgrove, a member the International Federation of Social Workers’ committee to the United Nations, has helped create service programs in Panama and Haiti, and he has trained workers and educators or done consulting work in Romania, Haiti, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, and Puerto Rico. Additionally he was a Senior Fulbright Fellow and Visiting Professor. “Enlarging our worldview is not just an intellectual exercise,” said Cosgrove. “It requires hard work. We need to take every opportunity to immerse ourselves in cultures different from our own, physically whenever possible, or by proxy through the literature, film and art of those cultures.” The Trailblazer Award is a lifetime achievement award given annually to social workers who have had significant impact in the field.
