GSS Professional Development Workshop: Working with LGBT Clients—Terminology and Best Practice

This professional development workshop will discuss the basic concepts and terminology surrounding the LGBTQ community. It is for students who are interested in gaining a better understanding of the gender spectrum, sexual orientation, and working with clients who are part of the queer community.
Speaker Bio:
Emma Gross, L.M.S.W., is a social worker and clinician working in Manhattan and Brooklyn. She has experience working with homeless, low-income, and LGBTQ populations throughout New York City, providing case management, individual, and group therapy services. Emma has also worked with transgender patients and their families, providing mental health support in outpatient and inpatient medical settings, and developed a fellowship to provide social work services at Rhode Island Hospital’s transgender medicine clinics. Prior to pursuing her M.S.W., Emma spent years working in online communities for queer and gender non-conforming individuals. As part of this work, she helped to build and manage the Gender Spectrum Lounge, an online space designed to help connect gender non-conforming young people, their parents and families, and the professionals that work with them to in a supportive space for conversation and resource sharing. Emma is passionate about individuals’ right to self-identify and excited about the infinite variety of ways to be a human in the world.
