About James R. Dumpson, Ph.D.
James Dumpson fought fiercely for the rights of the most vulnerable among us—children, the poor, the infirm, and the elderly—during a groundbreaking career that spanned nearly half a century. In 1959, Mayor Robert Wagner appointed Dumpson as New York City’s first black welfare commissioner. From 1967 to 1974, he served as dean of Fordham’s Graduate School of Social Service, where his legacy of public service endures to this day. He died in 2012 at age 103. His lifelong dedication to the care of young people inspired Fordham to endow the James R. Dumpson Chair in Child Welfare Studies.
