Thursday, September 15, 2016, 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.
Calligraphy is one of the most sublime forms of visual art from ancient China, closely allied with Chinese paintings using ink and brush. It unfolds in time like music and dance. Yet it retains tangible rhythms and concrete traces of writing on the absorbent rice paper or silk. The elevated status of calligraphy reflects the monumental importance of written word in China. Shengchen Huang is a renowned artist working in the tradition of calligraphy, painting and poetry. He serves as the vice-president of San Qin Calligraphy and Painting Research Association and the honorable president of Shaaxi Tang Ren Calligraphy and Painting Institute. One of his specialties is 金文 bronze engraving that originated ca. 1600 BCE during the Shang dynasty.
