SUMMARY:Hope from the Ruins: 9/11 and Forgiveness 25 Years Later
DESCRIPTION:A quarter century has passed since the Sept. 11 attacks that changed American society and global dynamics in so many ways. For those who lived through that time\, 9/11 can feel like it happened yesterday. For the generation that followed\, it can seem as distant as Pearl Harbor. \nAs we consider this milestone\, what lessons can we learn? What can those who experienced that time teach us about coping with tragedy\, about forgiving the unforgivable? And what can those with no memory of 9/11 find in that tragedy that can help them navigate the perils and challenges of today’s world? Can “hope and history rhyme\,” as the poet Seamus Heaney wrote? \nCome and listen to three remarkable people who learned from the shock and loss of Sept. 11 and lived through its long aftermath\, emerging with a deeper wisdom to share. \nColleen Kelly\, a founding member of September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows. Her brother\, Bill Kelly\, Jr.\, was killed when Tower 1 was struck. She has devoted herself to the cause of peace. \nBrian Jordan\, OFM\, is a Franciscan friar and pastor at St. Francis of Assisi parish in midtown Manhattan. Father Brian served as a chaplain at Ground Zero\, ministering to rescue and recovery workers of all faiths. \nImam Khalid Latif\, director and co-founder of the Islamic Center of New York City (ICNYC). Imam Latif in 2007 became the youngest person ever to serve as a New York Police Department chaplain and he has become a leading voice against bigotry and for interfaith understanding. \nDavid Gibson\, director of Fordham’s Center on Religion and Culture\, will moderate the discussion and field questions from the audience. \nRabbi Katja Vehlow\, Fordham’s chaplain for Jewish life\, will offer an opening prayer and Fordham’s director of Muslim life\, Imam Ammar Abdul Rahman\, will close the event with prayer. \nThis event is organized and sponsored by Fordham’s Office of Mission Integration and Ministry.
