SUMMARY:Exhibition: “Melvin Hollins: The Observer”
DESCRIPTION:Melvin Hollins was an African-American armed forces veteran\, a Fordham University Lincoln Center Ram\, and a gifted street photographer who compassionately recorded the social fabric of New York City throughout the 1970s. This exhibition presents 18 framed archival prints made from scanned black and white negatives in the Ildiko Butler Gallery\, and 133 5″ x 8″ pages from the book Melvin Hollins: The Observer\, which encircle the entire Susan Lipani Gallery in the Visual Arts Complex. \nThe images span the geography of New York City and the diverse cultures that call it home. Hollins’ photographs range from direct portraits to candid impressions made from afar\, and to images that record the quotidian details of everyday life in New York—buildings\, streets\, parades\, contests\, marches\, playgrounds\, and beyond. Regardless of what Melvin Hollins pointed his camera at\, his photographs are marked by attentiveness to form and suffused with empathy and kindness. In particular\, his images of children are extraordinary for the complexity and range of emotions they depict. \nThe title of the exhibition and accompanying book is both a description of Melvin’s photographic practice and a nod to our outstanding student newspaper\, The Observer\, whose photographs demonstrate extraordinary documentary reportage\, as did Melvin’s. Lastly\, but significantly\, the color theme for this exhibition is based on the 1970s New York license plate and subway signage—and yes\, that is Denzel Washington as a student on stage in the Pope Auditorium. \nAn exhibition talk on Tuesday\, October 20\, at 6 p.m. in the Ildiko Butler Gallery will include Jude Hollins and Fordham photography professors Stephan Apicella-Hitchcock\, Patrice Helmar\, Joseph Lawton\, Anibal Pella-Woo\, and Dan Wilner. \nCurator Stephan Apicella-Hitchcock worked with Melvin Hollins’ son\, Jude Hollins\, for over two years to edit down 2\,600 images for this exhibition and book. Melvin Hollins: The Observer is available as a 298-page\, 5″ x 8″ print-on-demand publication with an introduction by Stephan Apicella-Hitchcock and an essay by Jude Hollins.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: “Oy\, Joy! Can We Talk About (Jewish) Joy?”
DESCRIPTION:“Oy\, Joy! Can We Talk About (Jewish) Joy?” explores themes of joy through the work of contemporary artists and historical artifacts from Fordham’s Special Collections. We bring together in conversation works of artists  Maira Kalman\, Deborah Kass\, Jacqueline Kott-Wolle\, Simone Levy Greenwood\, Holly Markhoff\, ES23\, and Nina Talbot\, along with the textile art of Sharon and Jerry Goldberg. \nIn a world filled with pain and suffering\, tormented by wars\, climate crisis\, pandemics\, and disruption\, is it possible to talk about joy? Is it even appropriate? Yet\, in the most difficult times\, there is also a deep need for joy. As Maya Angelou once said\, “We need joy as we need air.” \nSpeaking of joy does not mean disregarding sadness and pain. In fact\, joy and pain often go together. In Jewish tradition\, joy is very frequently tied to mourning and suffering. There is often an “Oy\, vey” aspect in an experience of joy. Sometimes someone’s joy clashes with someone else’s suffering and pain. Sometimes joy is an act of resistance. Sometimes joy is a manifestation of resilience and recovery. \nThe exhibit was curated by Erez DeGolan\, Amy Levine-Kennedy\, and Magda Teter. It is made possible by the Hadassah Ruth Weiner Fund for Jewish Art at Fordham\, the Henry S. Miller Judaica Research Collection Endowment. \n“Oy\, Joy” will be on view at the Walsh Family Library on the 4th floor in the Henry S. Miller Judaica Research Room and in the Special Collections and Archives from Octotber 15\, 2026\, through February 2027.

SUMMARY:Book Talk: For the Love of Labor: The Life of Pauline Newman
DESCRIPTION:For the Love of Labor: The Life of Pauline Newman\, a talk by Cathryn Prince with response by Amy Levine-Kennedy \nFor the Love of Labor: The Life of Pauline Newman tells the story of a self-educated Jewish immigrant who dedicated herself to a legion of causes and lifelong battles against sexism and classism. Newman went from working as a child laborer in New York City sweatshops to advising presidents during the New Deal Era and beyond. Additionally\, the book covers Newman’s 5o-year relationship with a woman\, her struggles with her sexual identity\, and her final years. \nAn adjunct professor of journalism at Fordham\, Cathryn J. Prince is the author of several nonfiction books including Death in the Baltic: The WWII Sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff and Shot from the Sky: American POWs in Switzerland. She is also a freelance journalist who contributes to several publications including The Forward\, Hadassah Magazine\, and The Christian Science Monitor. She holds an MS in journalism from Columbia University\, a MA in American studies from Fairfield University\, and a B.A. in international affairs from The Elliott School of International Affairs\, George Washington University. \nAmy Levine-Kennedy is a writer and curator whose work has appeared in The Atlantic\, Hyperallergic\, Sports Illustrated\, and Health. She is an adjunct professor of journalism and communication and media studies at Fordham University and Hunter College\, and is a curator in Fordham’s Center for Jewish Studies and the Koslowe Gallery in Mamaroneck\, NY. She holds an MS in journalism from Columbia University and a BA in English and art history from Tufts.

DESCRIPTION:Rogério M. Pinto\, PhD\, is a University of Michigan Diversity and Social Transformation Professor in Social Work and a practicing visual/performance artist. In his new book\, Anti-Oppression and Healing in the Arts (Bloomsbury\, 2026)\, he explores how to create drama and performance that shed light on the causes and effects of oppression. The book will appeal to those interested in storytelling\, social justice\, and self-healing. The text incorporates Pinto’s award-winning one-person play\, Marília\, about gender identity\, childhood trauma\, and the author’s experiences as an immigrant to the US. Pinto also introduces theoretical and empirical evidence for how myriad art practices can improve empathy and well-being. \n​The hour-long event will include Pinto reading from his play\, and a Q&A to inspire reflection and action against oppression.

DESCRIPTION:The Portrayal of Pagan Worship in the Hebrew Bible and Ancient Judaism\, a talk by Jesse Mirotznik with response by Lawrence Shiffman \nIn Mirotznik’s monograph\, The Portrayal of Pagan Worship in the Hebrew Bible and Ancient Judaism\, he argues that a decisive change took place in ancient Jewish portrayals of the Other around the 3rd century B.C.E. In Israelite/Jewish literature composed up to this point\, the worship of other gods and the reverence of their icons is consistently depicted as sincere\, and its appeal\, whether to Israelites or non-Israelites\, is\, as a rule\, not questioned. At some point around the end of the 3rd century B.C.E.\, however\, a new form of argument arises: that the worship of other gods and the reverence of their icons is\, in fact\, an entirely unattractive practice\, and that even its practitioners must inwardly reject it. Put differently: while the devotees of ‘false gods’ appear to take these deities seriously\, even they must know\, on some level\, that their gods are nonsense. In this lecture\, he will attempt to demonstrate some elements of this shift in ancient Jewish portrayals\, in particular focusing on greed and sex\, and their relationship to idolatry.” \nJesse Mirotznik is a scholar of the Hebrew Bible and ancient Judaism. He earned his PhD from Harvard University\, completed postdoctoral fellowships at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and at Bar-Ilan University\, and is now an Universitätsassistent (Postdoc) at the Department of Jewish Studies at the University of Vienna. In his research\, he investigates how ancient Israelites and Jews pictured other religions. His first book on this topic\, The Portrayal of Pagan Worship in the Hebrew Bible and Ancient Judaism\, was recently published with Cambridge University Press. \nLawrence H. Schiffman\, PhD\, is the Global Distinguished Professor of Hebrew and Judaic Studies at New York University and Director of the Global Institute for Advanced Research in Jewish Studies. A world-renowned specialist in the Dead Sea Scrolls\, Judaism in late antiquity\, and the history of Jewish law\, he has authored over 200 articles and numerous seminal books\, including Reclaiming the Dead Sea Scrolls and From Text to Tradition. Dr. Schiffman frequently shares his expertise with the public\, having been featured in documentaries for PBS\, the BBC\, A&E\, and CNN. He received his BA\, MA\, and PhD from Brandeis University and is a past president of the Association for Jewish Studies.

SUMMARY:Lecture: "No Logos: Exilic Theory of Talmud" by Elad Lapidot
DESCRIPTION:What is Jewish? In contrast to common tendencies\, this talk considers Jewishness not as endangered life\, but as a tradition of thought. In contrast to apologetic attempts to identify in Jewish intellectual history forms of Western disciplines\, such as philosophy or mysticism\, this talk focuses on talmudic literature\, traditionally dismissed by Europe as thoughtless legalism. Talmud is considered as a method of thinking that diverges from the philosophical polis of logos. Engaging thinkers such as Emmanuel Levinas\, Daniel Boyarin\, and Sergey Dolgopolski\, Lapidot argues that rabbinic thought operates as a logoclasm: the dispersion of logos through acts of hermeneutics\, nomos\, and polemics. \nElad Lapidot is Professor for Hebraic Studies at the University of Lille\, France\, and the director of the Berlin Center for Intellectual Diaspora. DESCRIPTION:One of the many Hebrew terms describing a cemetery is bet mo’ed le-khol ḥai (“the house appointed for all living” from a verse in Job 30:23). In this webinar\, linked to our walking tours focusing on Jewish Life in the Bronx\, we will explore a slice of American Jewish history preserved in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx\, which counts among its permanent residents scions of American Jewish life: Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia\, composer Irving Berlin\, the Lehman family\, and many others. \nDavid Herszenson is a physician living in the Bronx and a trained tour guide with a love of the Bronx and its different neighborhoods. He has been doing walking tours of the Jewish sites in the Bronx for Fordham’s Center for Jewish Studies in the last three years as part of Fordham’s Bronx Jewish History Project.

SUMMARY:Cultivating Curiosity in Chronic Illness Care
DESCRIPTION:Completion of this class will result in the receipt of two and one-half (2.5) continuing education hours. \nAs treatments advance\, more people are living longer with serious illnesses that in the past would have resulted in significantly limited lifespans. This interactive class will invite us to explore the impact of how illnesses that even recently might have been perceived as a “death sentence” might now be “managed” as a “chronic illness” requires adjustments for all parties – patients\, their care partners\, families\, and clinicians. Living with the knowledge that treatments may be needed for years (or perhaps decades)\, and that any “twinge” may be an early indicator of progression can challenge even the most resilient. Health social workers play an important role in normalizing concerns\, managing expectations\, exploring the influence of culture\, supporting adaptive coping\, and in identifying resources to address the impact of social drivers on health. Yet\, unfortunately\, these are precisely the patients most likely to be missed with our referral “triggers.” We’ll discuss the importance of comprehensive screening\, assessments and the cultivation of curiosity in chronic illness care so that we might better serve this vulnerable population.
