SUMMARY:Mr. Burns\, a post-electric play
DESCRIPTION:What happens when a society must rebuild itself after an environmental disaster and social collapse? What happens over 75 years when surviving “tribes” inject meaning into their lives by recovering from memory the TV series that bound them together before the Fall? This musical tragi-comedy asks: When communities are under assault from the forces of darkness\, will their performances unite them?

SUMMARY:The Global Migration Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Cinema and migration have a magical bond stretching back to over a century ago\, when filmmakers\, many of whom were immigrants themselves\, began making movies that depicted a world on the move. Their films brought the dramatic\, poignant and comic stories of migrants to diverse audiences\, through images that provoked feeling among people of every culture. \nThe Global Migration Film Festival (GMFF) features films and documentaries that capture the promise and challenges of migration\, and the unique contributions that migrants make to their new communities. The goal of the festival is to pave the way for greater discussion around one of the greatest phenomena of our time. \nIn celebration of the GMFF\, IOM-UN Migration and Fordham University will hold a discussion on the media landscape and migration and screen films from the festival’s slate. From films to tweets\, newspapers\, and television shows\, sources for consumption of media are plentiful today. The discussions alongside the film festival will examine the myriad ways the media reports on\, discusses\, and portrays migration and migrants. Filmmaker and GMFF International jury member Idil Ibrahim will screen and hold a Q&A on her film Sega.

SUMMARY:Quartet Metadata: From Bagpipes to Shooting Stars
DESCRIPTION:String Quartet New York\, Fordham University’s annual series featuring contemporary works by New York City composers\, will take place Friday\, November 16\, at Fordham’s Lowenstein Center. Admission is free. The concert is curated by Lawrence Kramer\, Distinguished Professor of English and Music at Fordham. The 2018 installment of String Quartet New York features two world premieres: “The Night Sky\,” by Kramer\, who is also a renowned musicologist\, and “Short Quartets\,” by up-and-coming composer Jeff Myers. “Umoja\,” an original groove-based composition by the Grammy-nominated Valerie Coleman\, draws on the tradition of call and response. Matthew Welch’s “String Quartet No. 2” expands on the melodic sensibility of the Highland Bagpipe. “I like to think of this program as going from bagpipes to shooting stars\,” says Kramer. “While the music is remarkably diverse\, representing four utterly different stylistic and expressive worlds\, the elements all come together to offer something for everyone.” \nQuartet Metadata is a string quartet based in New York City dedicated to the music of today. Founded in 2010\, the quartet consists of Lynn Bechtold and Hajnal Pivnick\, violins; Carrie Frey\, viola; and Jisoo Ok\, cello. Together they have performed on the Concrete Timbre Series\, as well as at Fordham\, Fashion Institute of Technology\, the Whitney Museum\, Yale University\, and the Juilliard School.

SUMMARY:Duo Cantabile: Musical Landscapes for Violin and Piano
DESCRIPTION:Violinist Claudia Schaer and pianist Helen Lin will return to the National Opera Center after last year’s packed-house concert with an evening of vividly evocative recent music\, including the world premiere of a composition by Lawrence Kramer\, Ph.D.\, Distinguished Professor at Fordham University. \nThe program will explore the power of music to conjure up feelings of place and space\, from John Adams’ depiction of the quintessentially American open road\, to Matthew Peterson’s portrait of a spirit-haunted stream\, to Kramer’s evocations of landscapes enlivened by cloud shadows and light on water. The evening will conclude by turning back the clock to Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s festive take on a Shakespeare comedy. \nFree admission. Donations welcome.

SUMMARY:100 Photography Alumni
DESCRIPTION:The current exhibition in Fordham University’s Lipani Gallery features 100 photography alumni from across twenty years. Each photographer was asked to submit four images of their choice\, which were produced as postcards. This deck of cards was shuffled and the images installed from left to right\, repeatedly circling the gallery. The random image sequence has created interesting juxtapositions of content\, geography\, and era. \nThis event was organized by Stephan Apicella-Hitchcock. \nThis exhibition runs from May 31\, 2018 to September 14\, 2018.

SUMMARY:Faculty Spotlight 2018: Stephan Apicella-Hitchcock\, Anibal Pella-Woo\, and Mark Street
DESCRIPTION:The current display of works in Fordham University’s Ildiko Butler Gallery is the 2018 installment of the annual Faculty Spotlight Exhibition. Each spring\, three members from the Department of Theater and Visual Art are asked to share a sampling of their production with the Fordham community. Mark Street represents the film/video concentration; the photography concentration is represented by both Stephan Apicella-Hitchcock and Anibal Pella-Woo. Despite the differences in their mediums and approaches\, their works generate a lively dialogue around narrative strategies\, presentation of history\, and representational methods. \nThis exhibition runs from June 4\, 2018 to September 14\, 2018.

SUMMARY:MMAA: 2018 Alumni Spring Cabaret
DESCRIPTION:Do you miss the glow of stage lights\, bearing your soul on stage\, or the energy of Collins Auditorium? \nRelive your favorite show\, character\, or song by performing in the second annual MMAA Cabaret\, produced jointly with the Mimes and Mummers student board. Celebrate with former cast members\, current students\, and fellow alumni at this exciting event. \nWe are looking for submissions from all years to put together a fun show that will highlight some Mimes and Mummers’ classics. We are particularly interested in duets\, but we also welcome solo and group submissions. If you are interested in performing or would like to recommend someone to perform\, please email Emily Pandise at emilypandise@gmail.com. \nAfter the event\, we invite you to join us for a celebration on Arthur Avenue. \nWe’d like to encourage everyone who attends to make a $15 gift to the current Mimes and Mummers student fund. Donations for the fund or toward our event costs will also be gratefully accepted on-site.
