SUMMARY:3rd Annual Catholic Women Speak Conference
DESCRIPTION:Catholic Women Speak is inspired by both the Global Synod’s discernment of the role of women in the Church and the desire to uplift Catholic women in our community who live a variety of vocations. In 2026\, our world feels heavy\, marked by division and fear. But our story does not end here. We invite you into the practice of groundedness\, joy\, and community so that together we can ask\, “What can resistance look like\, and how can we practice it as women of faith?” As we strive to cultivate the fruits of justice from the seeds of hope\, Catholic Women Speak 2026 seeks to participate in the vital work of community-building and action. Speakers include Mary Kate Holman\, PhD\, Martha Hennessy\, and the Rev. Meg Stapleton Smith\, PhD\, among others\, with preaching by Natalia Imperatori-Lee\, PhD. All are welcome.

SUMMARY:Films Worth Talking About\, Even If Difficult: Silence
DESCRIPTION:This spring\, the film series Films Worth Talking About\, Even If Difficult expands its programming into a broader interpretive territory. “Difficult films” are not limited to films that are emotionally challenging or politically provocative; they can also refer to films that are visually experimental\, sonically demanding\, historically complex\, or with multi-threaded or temporally shifting narratives. Ultimately\, the series is a cinematic pretext for hanging out\, eating\, and talking—a communal exercise where we discuss\, discover\, and sometimes disagree\, which is all part of the experience. \nAbout the first screening this semester:\nSilence\, directed in 2016 by Martin Scorsese\, is a historical drama about belief\, doubt\, and perseverance. It follows two 17th-century Portuguese Jesuit priests who travel to Japan to find their mentor\, rumored to have committed apostasy. Amidst brutal persecution of Christians\, they face tests of faith and experience immense physical and psychological suffering. Silence deftly explores themes of cultural conflict\, the nature of internal faith versus public depictions\, power\, colonial expansion\, and the Tokugawa Shogunate’s perspective on foreign subversion. With a deliberate pace\, Silence is an extended and nuanced meditation on a complex question rather than a swift\, superficial filmic answer. \nPanelists:\nFather George Drance\, S.J.\, Artist-in-Residence\, Theatre Program; Father Michael Zampelli\, S.J.\, Associate Professor\, Theatre Program; and Professor James McCartin\, Associate Professor\, Department of Theology and Dean Fellow. Moderated by Stephan Apicella-Hitchcock\, Head of Visual Arts. Open to all\, with pizza and a raffle prize. \nThe Office of the Arts and Sciences Dean invites you to step outside your regular streaming queue\, experience something different\, and join a community of curious film lovers throughout the year. Please bring your friends\, an open mind\, and have a question ready. Additionally\, to sweeten the deal\, we offer raffle items connected to the film. By participating\, you could walk away with a special prize AND a different perspective. \nPreviously:\nDahomey\, directed in 2024 by Mati Diop.\nPanelists: Associate Professor of African and African American Studies/Comparative Literature/Women\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies Laurie Lambert and Associate Professor of Art History Maria Ruvoldt\, moderated by Stephan Apicella-Hitchcock\, Clinical Professor\, Head of the Visual Arts Program\, Dean Fellow. \nThe Exorcist\, directed in 1973 by William Friedkin\, based on the 1971 novel by William Peter Blatty.\nSponsored by The Office of the Arts & Sciences Dean and the Visual Arts Program.\nPanelists: Dr. Rachel Annunziato\, Professor of Psychology\, Vice Dean for Arts & Sciences; Father David Marcotte\, S.J.\, Associate Professor of Psychology\, and moderator Stephan Apicella-Hitchcock\, Clinical Professor\, Head of the Visual Arts Program\, Dean Fellow. \nAkira\, directed in 1988 by Katsuhiro Otomo\, based on his 1982 manga Akira.\nSponsored by the FitzSimons Civics and Civility Initiative in collaboration with the Office of the Arts & Sciences Dean and the Visual Arts Program.\nPanelists: Nushelle de Silva\, Assistant Professor of Art History; Terrence Mosley\, Adjunct Professor\, Theatre Program; Anthony A. Berry\, FitzSimons Fellow; and moderator Stephan Apicella-Hitchcock\, Clinical Professor\, Head of the Visual Arts Program\, Dean Fellow.

SUMMARY:Dead Man Walking: Art\, Adaptation\, Activism
DESCRIPTION:Sister Helen Prejean\, the nation’s foremost death penalty opponent\, joins Catherine Anyango Grünewald and Rose Vines\, the illustrator and author of a new graphic edition of her award-winning memoir\, for a discussion about capital punishment\, social justice\, and the power of story. \nThe 2025 release of a graphic edition of Sister Helen’s 1993 memoir\, Dead Man Walking\, plus the 25th anniversary of the opera based on her book prompt questions about why this account retains such a hold on our creative imagination. The power of this story endures even as the death penalty continues to be practiced. \nDavid Gibson\, director of the Center on Religion and Culture\, will moderate the discussion with the panelists and the audience. \nFree books to all attendees. Sister Helen and Catherine Anyango Grünewald and Rose Vines will be available to sign books following the event.

SUMMARY:The Faith of Others: The Inspiration of Interreligious Dialogue in Light of Nostra Aetate
DESCRIPTION:This October marks 60 years since the Second Vatican Council adopted the historic Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Christian Religions\, called Nostra Aetate. Nostra Aetate is best known for revisiting and reforming the long history of Catholic misrepresentation and mistreatment of Jews and provided a baseline for Catholic interreligious engagement in the contemporary world. \nHaving grown up in a home in which ecumenical discussions were vital\, Susannah Heschel\, Ph.D.\, Eli M. Black Distinguished Professor of Jewish Studies at Dartmouth College and chair of the Jewish Studies Program\, will recount personal memories of her father\, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel\, and of the many Christian theologians and clergy who came to their home. Taking up the theological as well as the historical trajectory that led to Nostra Aetate\, she will give particular attention to the relationship between Rabbi Heschel and Augustin Cardinal Bea\, charting the new theological directions they represented regarding divine inspiration and prophecy. She will conclude with reflections on the extent to which interfaith encounters can also become moments of prayer. \nResponding to Professor Heschel will be Heather Miller Rubens\, Executive Director of the Institute for Islamic\, Christian\, and Jewish Studies in Baltimore\, who will look from this history into the present and future—reflecting on the powers and limits of Nostra Aetate in our own time\, as well as on its significance beyond the Catholic-Jewish relationship. \nReception to follow in Platt Court \nThe 2025 Paul Wattson Lecture at Fordham University is co-sponsored and co-organized by the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement\, Graymoor Ecumenical & Interreligious Institute\, and\, at Fordham: the departments of theology and Jewish studies\, the Center on Religion and Culture\, the Francis and Ann Curran Center for Catholic Studies\, Campus Ministry\, and the Institute on Religion\, Law and Lawyer’s Work.
