SUMMARY:Reckoning and Reform: New Horizons on the Clergy Abuse Crisis
DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Russo Family Lecture \nThis symposium\, coming one month after a landmark Vatican summit on the clergy abuse scandal\, will feature an organizer of that summit and a leader in Rome’s anti-abuse efforts\, Hans Zollner\, S.J. \nFather Zollner’s lecture on the Catholic Church’s reform efforts\, and the global context of the sexual abuse crisis\, will follow a presentation from Margaret Smith and Karen Terry of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice\, authors of the two original reports on the scope of the crisis and its causes. \nThese two presentations\, part of Fordham University’s ongoing commitment to address the scourge of abuse in the church\, will provide new insights into how the scandal developed and how it is being addressed—and what remains to be done. \nPANELS\n4 – 5:30 p.m.\nPresentation by John Jay College researchers Karen Terry and Margaret Smith\, updating their studies in light of the new developments and data \nBREAK\nCocktail reception for attendees and speakers. \n6:15 – 7:30 p.m.\nRusso Family Lecture delivered by Hans Zollner\, S.J.\, president of the Centre for Child Protection at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and member of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors \nA moderated discussion will follow each presentation. \nFree Admission | RSVP: crcevent@fordham.edu \nThis lecture is made possible by the Russo Family Foundation\, in memory of Wanda and Robert Russo Sr.\, M.D.\, FCRH ’39.
