SUMMARY:Social Value Investing with Author Howard W. Buffett and Matthew Bishop of the Economist
DESCRIPTION:Social Value Investing presents a new way to approach some of society’s most difficult and intractable challenges. Although many of our world’s problems may seem too great and too complex to solve—inequality\, climate change\, affordable housing\, corruption\, healthcare\, food insecurity—solutions to these challenges do exist\, and will be found through new partnerships bringing together leaders from the public\, private\, and philanthropic sectors. \nDress is business attire and strictly enforced by The University Club. \nAbout the Author: \nHoward W. Buffett is an adjunct associate professor and research scholar at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. He served as the executive director of the Howard G. Buffett Foundation and coauthored the New York Times best-seller 40 Chances: Finding Hope in a Hungry World (2013). Previously\, Buffett oversaw economic stabilization programs in Afghanistan and Iraq for the U.S. Department of Defense. He also served as a policy advisor for the White House Domestic Policy Council\, where he co-authored the president’s cross-sector partnership strategy. \nAbout Matthew Bishop: \nMatthew Bishop most recently served at the Rockefeller Foundation as managing director\, focused on taking forward the Foundation’s convening\, networking\, and problem-solving capabilities by expanding the work of The Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center. Bishop created a new global institute that brought together diverse voices from around the world to shine a light on big ideas\, and help to rapidly\nimplement scalable solutions to improve the lives of the most vulnerable people. Previously\, he spent more than 25 years at The Economist\, serving in roles such as U.S. Business Editor\, New York Bureau Chief and global business editor. Through a variety of writing\, editorial\, and leadership roles\, he has committed himself to turning good ideas into forceful action. Bishop cofounded the Social Progress\nIndex\, helped to launch the #GivingTuesday campaign\, and was a member of the G8 Taskforce on Social Impact Investing. He is the co-author of several books\, including Philanthrocapitalism: How Giving Can Save the World and The Road From Ruin. Some years ago\, he was honored as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. \nThis talk is followed by a reception. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The first 100 attendees will receive a copy of the book.

SUMMARY:Fordham Urban Law Journal Cooper–Walsh Colloquium: Urban Intelligence and the Emerging City
DESCRIPTION:Urban intelligence is the operationalization of data in urban spaces through data analytics\, machine learning\, and artificial intelligence. An ever-growing field\, urban intelligence is transforming urban spaces\, behavior\, and governance. While urban intelligence may empower cities to improve efficiencies in areas such as infrastructure\, sustainability\, and social services\, its increasing use implicates a myriad of rights\, including privacy\, due process\, and equal access. As users and consumers of urban intelligence\, urbanites face inevitable growing pains\, particularly with how the data is used\, which may reflect racial\, gender\, economic\, and ethnic biases of the past and present. \nThe inevitable growth and consequent reach of urban intelligence necessitates increased investigation into the phenomenon’s regulatory and rights-based consequences. The 2019 Fordham Urban Law Journal Cooper– Walsh Colloquium provides such a forum. Alongside urban intelligence industry leaders—from developers to regulators\, from practitioners to academics—the Colloquium promises to be a lively and diverse conversation on the challenges\, possibilities\, and ways forward in the intersection of urban intelligence and the law. \nFor a full agenda\, please see the event website.

SUMMARY:Nobel Laureate Joseph Stiglitz on People\, Power and Profits: Progressive Capitalism for an Age of Discontent
DESCRIPTION:Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph E. Stiglitz grew up during the golden age of capitalism in Gary\, Indiana\, a steel town whose fortunes rose and fell with the waves of industrialization and deindustrialization. But even during Stiglitz’s childhood\, life didn’t seem so golden. He saw inequality\, racial discrimination\, and labor strife all around\, and that was when capitalism was thriving and the middle class\, ascendant. In the ensuing years things grew far worse. Back in Gary for his 55th high school reunion in 2015\, Stiglitz was dismayed by the decrepit state of his hometown and the economic and physical miseries borne by many of his classmates. \nWhat had happened? Stiglitz has long sounded the alarm about growing economic inequality in the United States. As chief economist of the World Bank and Chairman of Clinton’s Council of Economic Advisors\, he saw first-hand the toll that financial deregulation\, globalization\, and government inaction can take on a community. This has played out over and over again in cities and towns across the United States\, feeding into the resentment that fueled Donald Trump’s election in 2016. The question we should ask ourselves today\, Stiglitz says\, is “What can we do about it?” \nIn his new book\, People\, Power and Profits: Progressive Capitalism for an Age of Discontent\, Stiglitz answers that question by laying out a 21st Century Social Contract to rebuild the American middle class and reinvigorate the American economy. Many candidates will likely use Stiglitz’s timely advice in their 2020 presidential campaigns. \nProf. Stiglitz will be interviewed by Bruce Greenwald\, the Robert Heilbrunn Professor of Finance and Asset Management at Columbia Business School and the academic co-director of the Heilbrunn Center for Graham & Dodd Investing. Described by The New York Times as “a guru to Wall Street’s gurus\,” Greenwald is an authority on value investing with additional expertise in productivity and the economics of information. \nConversation followed by reception. Seating is limited. The first 125 attendees will receive a free copy of the book. \nCo-sponsored by the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis and the Museum of American Finance
