SUMMARY:GSAS Workshop: Designing Effective Assessment
DESCRIPTION:This two-hour workshop will enable Graduate School of Arts and Sciences students to design thoughtful assignments in their courses that effectively target the learning objectives. \nThe workshop will be led by Anne Fernald\, Ph.D.\, professor of English and special adviser to the provost for faculty development. Fernald will guide students through the many levels involved in designing effective assessment including developing thoughtful and reasonable course objectives; choosing assignments that actually assess those objectives; balancing the number of assignments with the weight of each\, in a way that is sensitive to the diversity of student backgrounds in the class; and designing effective and fair extra credit assignments. \nThis workshop will satisfy part of Core Competency 5—Diversity in the Classroom for the Preparing Future Faculty certificate.

SUMMARY:James Whitman on Hitler's American Model: The United States and the Making of Nazi Race Law
DESCRIPTION:We invite you for a conversation with James Q. Whitman\, Ford Foundation Professor of Comparative and Foreign Law at Yale Law School; Jed Shugerman\, professor of law at Fordham University; and Magda Teter\, Shvidler Chair in Judaic Studies\, about Whitman’s book Hitler’s American Model: The United States and the Making of Nazi Race Law. \nWhitman’s timely book explores how American race law provided a blueprint for Nazi Germany. Nazism triumphed in Germany during the high era of Jim Crow laws in the United States. In Hitler’s American Model\, Whitman demonstrates the impact race laws in the United States\, such as Jim Crow\, anti-miscgenation laws\, and laws concerning American citizenship\, had on the notorious Nuremberg Laws\, the centerpiece anti-Jewish legislation of the Nazi regime. Linking American race laws to the shaping of Nazi policies in Germany\, Hitler’s American Model\, as Brent Staples noted in The New York Times\, “illustrates how German propagandists sought to normalize the Nazi agenda domestically by putting forth the United States as a model.” \nHarvard’s Lawrence Tribe praised the book as “a profound testament to what the past can teach us about the present.” Foreign Affairs called Hitler’s American Model one of the “Best Books of 2017.” According to Tulane’s Lawrence Powell\, Whitman’s book “is one of the most engrossing and disturbing pieces of legal history.” \nThis is a joint event of Fordham University’s Center for Jewish Studies; Fordham Law’s Institute of Religion\, Law\, and Lawyer’s Work; and the Center for Jewish Studies at CUNY-Graduate Center\, in collaboration with the New York Public Library and the Leo Baeck Institute.

SUMMARY:Fordham-NYPL Lecture Series in Jewish Studies: David Assaf on "Childhood\, Diaspora\, and Zionism"
DESCRIPTION:David Assaf\, a professor from Tel Aviv University\, will discuss a treasure trove of some ninety letters written in 1935 by Polish Jewish children\, around 12 to 13 years old\, who studied in the Tarbut school north of Warsaw to their teacher who immigrated to Palestine. These moving letters of elementary school pupils—not young adults like those who participated in YIVO competitions for autobiographies—offer a very rare glimpse into childhood of Jewish children in interwar Poland. \nThe lecture\, titled “To My Beloved Teacher in Eretz Israel: Childhood\, Diaspora\, and Zionism in Letters Written by Hebrew School Pupils in Interwar Poland\,” is a part of the Fordham-New York Public Library lecture series.

SUMMARY:GSS Continuing Education: Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias
DESCRIPTION:The goal of this class is to provide an introduction and overview of the topic\, including the definition of Alzheimer’s disease and identification of related dementias; the multilevel effect of dementia on individuals and their family members; interventions for effective practice; and community agencies and resources. Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias are significant health issues faced by many individuals and their families. The often incurable nature of the disease\, long trajectory of the illness\, and usually silent symptoms during the onset all contribute to making dementia\, which includes Alzheimer’s disease\, one of the most difficult experiences for both the individual and the family caregivers. Social workers who work with older adults and family caregivers must be knowledgeable about dementia diagnoses\, including Alzheimer’s disease. Understanding the physical trajectory and symptomatology of dementia\, and the psychosocial\, financial\, and other consequences of dementia are critical to effective practice. \nParticipants will be able to: \n\nIdentify the etiology and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.\nIdentify the trajectory of Alzheimer’s disease.\nDescribe the cumulative impact of dementia on the family system and the multiple factors affecting caregiving.\nIdentify appropriate interventions to assist individuals with dementia and their families in future planning for health care decisions that are based on the unique needs of clients.

SUMMARY:Physics and Engineering Physics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Matthew Szydagis\, Ph.D.\, of the State University of New York at Albany\, will present\, “Lab Detection of Dark Matter From The Cosmos.” \nThe nature of dark matter has remained an enduring enigma for over eight decades now\, for both cosmology and astroparticle physics. The majority of cosmic mass\, over 85%\, does not shine in the stars nor exist in atomic form. A continued lack of unambiguous evidence from a direct detection experiment of the traditional Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) has led to a major thrust to consider masses both higher and lower than before\, driven by many hypotheses and models. \nSzydagis will summarize his work on the LUX (Large Underground Xenon) experiment and its multi–ton scale successor\, LZ\, currently under construction underground. He will also discuss the microphysics simulations of NEST (Noble Element Simulation Technique) used to make predictions for signals in a liquid xenon–based detector\, and emphasize new research and development at Albany using water to look for dark matter lighter than the canonical WIMP particle. This research and development effort relies critically upon nanotechnology for water purification.
