A career diplomat\, Ambassador Massolo was the coordinator of the Italian intelligence community from 2012 to 2016\, the Prime Minister’s personal representative\, Sherpa\, for the G-8 and G-20 Summits in 2008 to 2009\, and the secretary general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2007-2012. He is an adjunct professor of national security and international relations studies both at the School of Government of the LUISS University in Rome and at Sciences Po’s Paris School of International Affairs. He regularly contributes on international and security matters to the newspaper La Stampa. \nAbout Andrea Mennillo \nAndrea holds a B.S. in business from Federico II University in Naples and a B.S. in international banking from University of Lecce. He also is an alumnus of INSEAD Graduate School. He has almost 30 years of leadership experience\, mostly in financial institutions and infrastructure funds worldwide. \nHe has acted as chairman\, managing director\, and board member in banks\, insurance companies\, and financial conglomerates in Italy\, Spain\, France\, Germany\, Portugal\, the United Kingdom\, and Switzerland. After Cassa Depositi e Prestiti\, where he was appointed by the Ministry of Finance of Italy\, he founded IDA Capital\, an investment firm that operates in the fastest-growing countries and focuses on business diplomacy. \nAndrea is the parent of Francesco Mennillo\, GSB ’16\, and past chair of International Parents Leadership Council. DESCRIPTION:With the ongoing #BlackLivesMatter protests and calls for the abolition of police and prisons at the forefront\, this one hour session will amplify the importance of talking about race and racism\, not just as a moral imperative\, but as a strategic tool for advancing racial justice in our communities and institutions. \nThroughout this conversation\, we will: \n\ntalk about why it’s important to be race explicit and intersectional in our individual and institutional conversations\ndig into the construction of race on Turtle Island (what indigenous folks call the United States)\, and its implications for the racial disparities we see today\ntalk about the distinctions between modern institutional terms such as diversity\, inclusion\, and equity\, and what they mean for the fight for racial justice\ntalk about some concrete shifts we can make towards de-centering whiteness and advancing racial equity within the U.S. and the rest of the world\n\nAs senior trainer for the movement and capacity building team of RaceForward\, Viquiera facilitates racial justice trainings for people who want to advance racial equity within their institutions. DESCRIPTION:Robert Shiller of Yale University\, an economist\, author\, and Nobel Laureate discusses his book Narrative Economics. Shiller proposes a novel idea —the narratives that people believe and use to understand the world affect their economic behavior and in turn\, affect the macroeconomy. Shiller is the Sterling Professor of Economics for the department of economics and Cowles Foundation for Research in Economics\, Yale University\, and professor of finance and fellow at the International Center for Finance\, Yale School of Management. He received his B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1967 and his Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1972. He has written on financial markets\, financial innovation\, behavioral economics\, macroeconomics\, real estate\, statistical methods\, and on public attitudes\, opinions\, and moral judgments regarding markets. \nShiller published many books includes: Market Volatility (MIT Press\, 1989)\, a mathematical and behavioral analysis of price fluctuations in speculative markets; Macro Markets: Creating Institutions for Managing Society’s Largest Economic Risks (Oxford University Press\, 1993)\, which proposes a variety of new risk-management contracts\, such as futures contracts in national incomes or securities based on real estate that would permit the management of risks to standards of living; Irrational Exuberance (Princeton University Press\, 2000\, Broadway Books\, 2001)\, an analysis and explication of speculative bubbles\, with special reference to the stock market and real estate; The New Financial Order: Risk in the 21st Century (Princeton University Press\, 2003)\, an analysis of an expanding role of finance\, insurance\, and public finance in our future; Subprime Solution: How the Global Financial Crisis Happened and What to Do about It\, (Princeton University Press\, 2008)\, an analysis of the housing and economic crisis and a plan of action against it; Finance and the Good Society (Princeton University Press\, 2012); and Deception (Princeton University Press\, 2015). \nShiller also co-authored two books with George Akerlof—Animal Spirits: How Human Psychology Drives the Economy and Why It Matters for Global Capitalism (Princeton University Press\, 2009) and Phishing for Phools: The Economics of Manipulation. \nHis latest book is Narrative Economics: How Stories Go Viral and Drive Major Economic Events (Princeton University Press\, 2019). \nHe cofounded Case Shiller Weis\, Inc. in 1991\, whose repeat-sales home price indices\, developed originally with Karl E. Case\, are now produced by CoreLogic and published as the S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Indices. The Chicago Mercantile Exchange now maintains futures markets based on the S&P/Case-Shiller Indices. He was cofounder of MacroMarkets\, LLC in 1999\, which launched Macroshares\, based on oil at the American Stock Exchange 2006-9\, and on the S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Indices at the New York Stock Exchange 2009-2010. \nHe has been research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research since 1980\, and has been co-organizer of NBER workshops including on behavioral finance with Richard Thaler 1991-2015\, and on macroeconomics and individual decision making (behavioral macroeconomics) with George Akerlof 1994-2007.\nHe was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences jointly with Eugene Fama and Lars Peter Hansen in 2013. \nHe served as vice president of the American Economic Association\, 2005 and president of the Eastern Economic Association\, 2006-07. He was elected president of the American Economic Association for 2016. \nHe writes a regular column “Finance in the 21st Century” for Project Syndicate\, which publishes around the world\, and “Economic View” for The New York Times. \nAbout Mario J. DiFiore \nMario J. DiFiore is assistant dean and senior adviser in the Gabelli School of Business; director of the Corporate Compliance Institute; editor of the international\, peer-reviewed Journal of Financial Compliance; and director for compliance and risk management course programs for Euromoney Financial Training (UK). \nDiFiore joined the Gabelli administration in July 2010 after a 25-year career on Wall Street\, which included time at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Prior to Fordham\, he was director and co-global head of Deutsche Bank AG’s Compliance Training Group for the Commercial and Investment Bank\, as well as the head of Americas Compliance Training. He was responsible for one of the largest financial regulation\, risk\, and compliance training programs on Wall Street. \nIn addition to his career at Deutsche Bank AG\, DiFiore was an assistant director at Ten Squared LLP\, a medium-sized hedge fund\, as well as the continuing education manager for Prudential Securities. DiFiore began his career with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York where he spent over 12 years in the research and statistics\, international affairs\, and public information areas. While at the Federal Reserve\, he was responsible for all financial and economic data for the weekly Federal Reserve press briefings\, one of the most widely followed financial and economic weekly press briefings globally. \nIn addition to teaching at Fordham since 2002\, DiFiore has taught finance\, economics\, and business courses at New York University\, Baruch College of the City University of New York\, Pace University\, SUNY Empire State College\, and the Mountbatten Institute at St. Mary’s College\, U.K. He was also a debate champion and panelist at Cambridge University at the Cambridge Symposium on Economic Crime. He is a frequent speaker at industry events and at major corporations. As an international consultant in the areas of risk\, compliance\, behavioral finance\, and financial markets\, he has taught in Europe\, Asia\, Africa\, North America\, and the Middle East. DiFiore is a Ph.D. candidate\, expected in 2020\, from the NEOMA Business School in Paris\, France\, and received his M.B.A and bachelor’s in economics\, summa cum laude\, from Fordham.

SUMMARY:William Magnuson on Blockchain Democracy: Technology\, Law and the Rule of the Crowd
DESCRIPTION:In Blockchain Democracy\, William Magnuson explores the world of blockchain and bitcoin\, from their origins in the online scribblings of a shadowy figure named Satoshi Nakamoto\, to their furious rise and dramatic crash in the 2010s\, to their ignominious connections to the dark web and online crime. Magnuson argues that blockchain’s popularity stands as a testament both to the depth of distrust of government today\, and also to the fervent and undying belief that technology and the world of cyberspace can provide an answer. He demonstrates how blockchain’s failings provide broader lessons about what happens when technology runs up against the stubborn realities of law\, markets\, and human nature. SUMMARY:IPED Summer Lecture Series: Basisipho Jack and Patrick Fernandez (IPED '20)\, Catholic Relief Services
DESCRIPTION:Patrick Fernandez and Basisipho Jack\, both IPED ’20\, are both recipients of the International Peace and Development Travel Scholarship and were assigned to intern with the Catholic Relief Services (CRS) in January 2020. Fernandez is currently with CRS in Kenya\, supporting CRS Kenya and Somalia country programs and its East Africa Regional Office (EARO)\, assisting in the operations of CRS programs and in data management for emergency response in Kenya. Jack is currently with CRS Zambia\, working on the Faith-Based Action for Scaling Up Testing and Treatment for Epidemic Response (FASTER) Project to accelerate the pediatric HIV response in four African countries: Nigeria\, Uganda\, Tanzania\, and Zambia. Fernandez and Jack will share their experience working with CRS overseas and how CRS and their work has been affected by the pandemic.

SUMMARY:Women Scholars of Orthodox Christianity Featuring Vera Shevzov
DESCRIPTION:The Orthodox Christian Studies Center at Fordham University is delighted to present the fourth episode of its webinar series highlighting the scholarly insights and academic careers of female scholars whose research and writing explore some facet of the history\, thought\, or culture of Orthodox Christianity. The broadcast will be livestreamed and open to all who have pre-registered. The event will include some time for live audience questions. For those who miss the live event\, the Center will archive each episode on its website and YouTube channel. \nThis episode features an interview with Vera Shevzov\, professor of religion and director of the Russian\, East European\, and Eurasian Studies Program at Smith College. Trained in Russian history at Yale University\, where she received her bachelor’s and Ph.D.\, as well as at St. Vladimir’s Seminary\, where she received her M.Div\, she has published on a wide range of topics related to Orthodox Christianity in modern\, Soviet\, and post-Soviet Russia. Supported at various stages by the American Academy of Religion\, the National Council for Eurasian and East European Research\, the National Endowment for the Humanities\, and the Mellon Foundation\, her publications have engaged lived religion and religious thought and their interface with: history\, liturgy\, and sacred memory; notions of “the West;” revolution and visual violence; the culture of icons; and the image of Mary. \nHer book\, Russian Orthodoxy on the Eve of Revolution (Oxford University Press)\, was awarded the Elizabeth D. Brewer Prize of the American Society of Church History. Most recently\, she co-edited a volume of essays on Mary in modern\, Revolutionary\, and Post-Soviet Russian culture. She is a former co-chair of the steering committing for the Eastern Orthodox Studies unit of the American Academy of Religion\, and is\ncurrently co-editor of the Journal of Orthodox Christian Studies (Johns Hopkins University Press). SUMMARY:Pandemics and Epidemics: Financial and Economic Effects
DESCRIPTION:During the first seven weeks of 2020\, despite ominous news from China\, Italy and Iran about the spread of the COVID-19 virus\, US stock indexes hit all-time highs. Then\, in little more than a month\, the market crashed. By March 23\, the Dow Industrials dropped 37%; the S&P 500\, 34%; and the NASDAQ Composite\, 30%. It seemed the markets suddenly realized that the virus’s spread to the U.S. would cause widespread business shutdowns\, school closings\, and stay-at-home orders. A major recession\, if not a depression\, seemed imminent. \nThen\, in response to the crisis\, the government implemented a number of unprecedented monetary and fiscal measures. By mid-April\, as the numbers of infections and deaths from the virus mounted daily\, the markets staged a sharp recovery\, which continued into June. Justified or not—only time will tell—the markets’ collective wisdom seemed to think the virus would soon go away and the government’s drastic measures would bring a sharp economic recovery. \nIs this what typically happens during epidemics and pandemics? Because they don’t occur often anymore\, most people have not experienced them and don’t have a clue as to what is typical. But they have happened often enough in history\, which can offer some guidance. She is non-resident senior fellow and co-chair of the Working Group on Christians and Religious Pluralism in the Middle East\, at the Center for Religious Freedom at the Hudson Institute\, and was non-resident Senior Fellow in National Security and the Middle East\, at the Center for American Progress. She is a co-president of Religions for Peace. \nProdromou served as vice chair and commissioner on the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (2004-2012) and was a member of the U.S. Secretary of State’s Religion and Foreign Policy Working Group (2011-2015). Her research interests focus on geopolitics and religion\, with particular focus on the Middle East\, the Eastern Mediterranean\, and Southeastern Europe. Her current research projects concentrate on cultural heritage and institutional religious freedom in Turkey\, as well as Eastern Orthodox Christianity in contexts of religious pluralism. \nThe author of multiple edited volumes and many publications in scholarly and policy journals\, Prodromou is a frequent commentator and contributor in US and international media. DESCRIPTION:This presentation\, featuring Yi Ding\, Ph.D.\, associate professor of school psychology in the Graduate School of Education\, will provide an overview of “specific learning disabilities” (SLD) including the etiology\, cause\, environmental factors contributing to SLD\, some assessment approaches\, and implications for educators and parents. \nDing is a certified school psychologist in New York and a nationally certified school psychologist (NCSP). She has experience practicing in different school settings\, department clinics\, and hospital settings. Her research interests including learning disabilities\, development disabilities\, STEM learning\, and special education and school psychology issues based on a multicultural perspective.

Benjamin’s transcultural Indian-Jewish art received praise in The New York Times\, The Chicago Tribune\, The Philadelphia Inquirer\, The Financial Times\, The Boston Globe\, Art in America\, Art New England\, Art and Antiques\, ArtNews\, Moment Magazine\, The Times of India\, Mumbai Mirror\, Marg Magazine\, and other publications. \nOri Z. SUMMARY:Women Scholars of Orthodox Christianity\, Featuring Bissera V. Pentcheva
DESCRIPTION:The Orthodox Christian Studies Center at Fordham University is delighted to present the seventh episode of its webinar series highlighting the scholarly insights and academic careers of female scholars whose research and writing explore some facet of the history\, thought\, or culture of orthodox Christianity. The broadcast will be livestreamed and open to all who have preregistered. The event will include some time for live audience questions. For those who miss the live event\, the Center will archive each episode on its website and YouTube channel. \nThis episode features an interview with Bissera V. Pentcheva\, professor of art history at Stanford University. She has published three books with Pennsylvania State University Press: Icons and Power: The Mother of God in Byzantium (2006)\, which received the Nicholas Brown Prize of the Medieval Academy of America in 2010; The Sensual Icon: Space\, Ritual\, and the Senses in Byzantium (2010); and Hagia Sophia: Sound\, Space and Spirit in Byzantium (2017)\, which received the 2018 American Academy of Religion Award in historical studies. She has edited the volumes Aural Architecture (Ashgate\, 2017) and Icons of Sound: Architecture\, Music and Imagination in Medieval Art (Routledge\, 2020). Her work is informed by phenomenology\, placing the attention on the changing appearance of objects and architectural spaces. She relies on film to capture this temporal animation stirred by candlelight. Another important strand of her work engages the sonic envelope of the visual—music and acoustics—and employs auralizations that digitally imprint the performance of chant with the acoustic signature of the specific interior for which it was composed. \nOrthodox Christian Studies Center events are free and open to the public. The Zoom link will be sent out to all registered participants one to two days prior to the event.

SUMMARY:Law-Psychology Webinar: Hot-Car Deaths
DESCRIPTION:In July 2019\, a Bronx father found his infant twins dead in an overheated car and realized he was responsible. Should he be prosecuted? During this webinar\, David Diamond\, Ph.D.\, of the University of South Florida will discuss his life-altering research on “hot car” deaths and the importance of such research for legal decision-making in courts. Diamond will discuss how neuroscience research guides legal decision-making and how failures in human memory can lead to catastrophes\, such as the hot car deaths of so many children. \nDiamond earned his Ph.D. in biology at UC Irvine in 1985 and is now a professor of psychology and neuroscience at USF. He is known for his award-winning research on memory failures and decision-making under stress\, and serves as an expert witness in memory-related criminal trials.
