SUMMARY:What Time is it in Heaven? God’s Time in Ancient Judaism and Why It Matters
DESCRIPTION:In this “In Dialogue” joint lecture\, Lynn Kaye\, author of Time in the Babylonian Talmud (Cambridge University Press\, 2018)\, and Sarit Kattan Gribetz\, author of Time and Difference in Rabbinic Judaism (Princeton University Press\, forthcoming)\, engage in a conversation about the ways in which rabbinic texts reflect on God’s time. \nDoes God exist in time? How does God tell time? What is God’s daily schedule? Through a series of surprising sources—at once playful and moving—they will explore how ancient Jews conceived of the divine and why it matters for how we understand Jewish theology.

SUMMARY:Social Value Investing with Author Howard W. Buffett and Matthew Bishop of the Economist
DESCRIPTION:Social Value Investing presents a new way to approach some of society’s most difficult and intractable challenges. Although many of our world’s problems may seem too great and too complex to solve—inequality\, climate change\, affordable housing\, corruption\, healthcare\, food insecurity—solutions to these challenges do exist\, and will be found through new partnerships bringing together leaders from the public\, private\, and philanthropic sectors. \nDress is business attire and strictly enforced by The University Club. \nAbout the Author: \nHoward W. Buffett is an adjunct associate professor and research scholar at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. He served as the executive director of the Howard G. Buffett Foundation and coauthored the New York Times best-seller 40 Chances: Finding Hope in a Hungry World (2013). Previously\, Buffett oversaw economic stabilization programs in Afghanistan and Iraq for the U.S. Department of Defense. He also served as a policy advisor for the White House Domestic Policy Council\, where he co-authored the president’s cross-sector partnership strategy. \nAbout Matthew Bishop: \nMatthew Bishop most recently served at the Rockefeller Foundation as managing director\, focused on taking forward the Foundation’s convening\, networking\, and problem-solving capabilities by expanding the work of The Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center. Bishop created a new global institute that brought together diverse voices from around the world to shine a light on big ideas\, and help to rapidly\nimplement scalable solutions to improve the lives of the most vulnerable people. Previously\, he spent more than 25 years at The Economist\, serving in roles such as U.S. Business Editor\, New York Bureau Chief and global business editor. Through a variety of writing\, editorial\, and leadership roles\, he has committed himself to turning good ideas into forceful action. Bishop cofounded the Social Progress\nIndex\, helped to launch the #GivingTuesday campaign\, and was a member of the G8 Taskforce on Social Impact Investing. He is the co-author of several books\, including Philanthrocapitalism: How Giving Can Save the World and The Road From Ruin. Some years ago\, he was honored as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. \nThis talk is followed by a reception. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The first 100 attendees will receive a copy of the book.

SUMMARY:Investing In Financial Research: A Decision-Making System For Better Results with Cheryl Einhorn
DESCRIPTION:Got financial decisions to make? Learn how to invest in financial research with author Cheryl Einhorn at this book lecture sponsored by the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis. \nEvery day\, people around the world make financial decisions. They choose to invest in a stock\, sell their holdings in a mutual fund\, or buy a condominium. These decisions are complex and financially tricky—even for financial professionals. But the literature available on financial research is dated and narrowly focused without any real practical application. Until now there’s been a gap in the literature—a book that shows you how to conduct a step-by-step comprehensive financial investigation that ends in a decision. \nThis book gives you that how. \nInvesting in Financial Research is a guidebook for conducting financial investigations and lays out Cheryl Strauss Einhorn’s AREA Method—a research and decision-making system that uniquely controls for bias\, focuses on the incentives of others and expands knowledge while improving judgement—and applies it to investigating financial situations. AREA is applicable to all sorts of financial sleuthing\, whether for investment analysis or investigative journalism. It allows you to be the expert in your own life. \nFirst 100 attendees will receive a free copy of the book. \nAbout the Author: \nCheryl Strauss Einhorn is the creator of the AREA Method\, a decision making system for individuals and companies to solve complex problems. She is the founder of CSE Consulting and the author of the award-winning book Problem Solved: A Powerful System for Making Complex Decisions with Confidence & Conviction. Einhorn teaches as an adjunct professor at Columbia Business School and has won several journalism awards for her investigative stories about international political\, business and economic topics. SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Maureen E. Raymo\, Ph.D.\, Bruce C. Heezen/Lamont Research Professor and director of the Lamont-Doherty Core Repository at Columbia University\, will present\, “Climate\, CO2\, and Sea Level: Past is Prologue.” \nThe Earth is running a fever. The ongoing pollution of our atmosphere by an invisible odorless gas called carbon dioxide is trapping heat at the Earth’s surface and causing temperatures to rise on land and in the ocean. The polar regions are warming fastest of all and the melting ice sheets are causing sea levels to rise around the globe. This talk will review evidence for climate change—natural and human-caused—and explore how ice sheets and sea level changed in the past. How fast the climate changes in the future will depend on our collective actions as individuals\, families\, communities\, and governments.

SUMMARY:Dear Editor: Advice Columns and the Making of the American Yiddish Press
DESCRIPTION:At the turn of the 20th century\, American Yiddish newspapers overflowed with advice columns offering implicit and explicit guidance to readers about how to live their lives. From the Forverts’ famous “A Bintel Brief” to more practical advice columns\, such as Der tog’s “Letter Box” column\, these publications printed countless letters from readers asking editors to help them navigate personal tribulations\, American political infrastructures\, and Jewish communal life. \nEditors and publishers introduced these features to engage and entertain newspaper readers\, as well as to increase circulation. But these features also encouraged audiences previously unaccustomed to reading newspapers to view these publications as central sources for information and guidance about acclimating to American life. Eventually\, these interactions spilled off the page. Yiddish newspapers became so successful at marketing themselves as fountains of advice that they had to create open office hours and hire staff members whose job it was to correspond or meet with readers eager to receive personal counsel from their favorite papers. \nIn this talk\, Ayelet Brinn will explore the crucial role of advice columns in the development of the Yiddish press\, how these columns shaped the relationships between newspapers and their readers\, and how central advice columns became to the acclimation process of new immigrants eager to learn more about American life.\nThis is a joint event of the Center for Jewish Studies at Fordham University and the Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies at Columbia University.

SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Gumaro Rendón\, Ph.D.\, of Brookhaven National Lab\, will present\, “New Physics on the Lattice.” \nThe success the Standard Model (SM) has had in describing particle physics cannot be overstated. It describes the smallest constituents of matter as well as three of the four fundamental forces—weak nuclear\, strong nuclear\, and electromagnetic—that hold these together. After the discovery of the Higgs boson\, we have observed\, directly or indirectly\, all the particles in the model. However\, its shortcomings should not be disregarded. There are several phenomena observed experimentally that cannot be described within it. \nFor instance\, deviations between experiment and SM predictions have emerged in weak nuclear processes. However\, the enveloping strong nuclear interactions have to first be calculated. We discuss how we use a space-time lattice to accomplish this.

SUMMARY:Vipassana Meditation with Dr. Paul Fleischman
DESCRIPTION:In his eighth annual visit to New York City\, Dr. Paul R. Fleischman\, author\, psychiatrist\, and Vipassana meditation teacher in the tradition of S.N. Goenka\, will be giving a public talk called\, “Vipassana Meditation—A Practical and Spiritual Path.” This event will be organized by the Fordham South Asian Business Association and\nNew York Vipassana Association. \nDr. Fleischman will discuss Vipassana meditation\, which in the tradition of S.N. Goenka is taught in free\, donation-funded\, ten-day residential retreats. It combines a focus upon practical\, cognitive\, and emotional skills for living life with equanimity\, along with an additional emphasis on a spiritual path that echoes the teachings of the Buddha. Students on a ten-day retreat are challenged to observe themselves as minds and bodies\, which can be trained to live with greater peace and harmony. They also are guided towards the values of pro-social living\, and activities that contribute to more widespread availability of meditation in the contemporary world. Vipassana is both useful and a doorway to an inspired daily practice. \nThe talk will be followed by a 30-minute Q&A session where Dr. Fleischman will answer questions from audience members. \nAbout Dr. Paul R. Fleischman\nDr. Paul R. Fleischman was chief resident in psychiatry at Yale University\, where he also taught a seminar on psychiatry and religion. He is the author of numerous books and articles\, including Cultivating Inner Peace\, Karma and Chaos\, and Wonder: When and Why the World Appears Radiant. He was honored by the American Psychiatric Association for “unique contributions to the study of psychiatry and religion.” Dr. Fleischman has practiced Vipassana meditation since 1974. He and his wife\, Susan Fleischman\, were appointed Vipassana teachers by Mr. S.N. Goenka\, to explain meditation in the West. Some of his lectures and podcasts are available at pariyatti.org/paul. \nAbout Vipassana Meditation:\nVipassana is an ancient Indian technique of meditation that is now taught for free in ten-day residential courses. Vipassana leads its practitioners towards deep insights about the ultimate reality of one’s own body\, mind\, and self. For more information\, visit dhamma.org or contact gsbsaba@fordham.edu.

DESCRIPTION:Le ‘Nouvel’ antisémitisme\, antisémitisme V2\, le retour. \nThese are all examples of vernacular French terms for naming\, while eschewing\, the accusation of a specifically Islamic anti-Semitism that is purportedly prevalent amongst Muslims\, both in and from the Middle East and North Africa. \nFrench language sociology has\, at least since Pierre-André Taguieff’s La nouvelle judéophobie (2002)\, been working to demonstrate this causality. Less developed in the social sciences\, however\, is the correlation between these theses of a purported ‘new’ anti-Semitism and a rise in ethno-nationalist\, anti-Muslim identification. Few balanced comparative studies of these forms of discrimination exist. \nSuch work would\, from an ethnographic standpoint\, have to take account of both the predominantly intellectual Jewish contexts in which these terms have at times been coined (and have grown)\, as well as those intellectual Muslim contexts in which\, at times\, ambiguous forms of Judeophobic discourse have been produced\, without neglecting the French societal context into which these are embedded. \nIn order to have a better understanding of such a process\, Sami Everett\, Ph.D.\, in his talk\, will draw from a year-long participant observation of civil society initiatives and cultural producers in favor of\, or indirectly addressing\, the vast field of ‘Muslim-Jewish dialogue’ across the larger French regions. \nHis interviews and experiences help to sketch-out a contemporary picture of how this discourse is produced and disseminated. Examples of this production are the debates around Albert Bensoussan’s court hearing\, which ended in 2019\, and the reception of Houria Bouteldja’s book Les blancs\, les juifs\, et nous (2017). While these highlight polarization\, the post-Charlie Hebdo and Hyper Kasher context may have also allowed for a more open discussion\, beyond community-bounds\, around Muslim North African cultural-linguistic legacies\, while maintaining honesty as to some of the geopolitical reasons for constructing a Muslim-predicated anti-Semitism.

SUMMARY:Meetings of John Paul II with Polish Jews: A recollection of a participant\, a reflection of a scholar
