SUMMARY:Physics & Engineering Physics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Megan Urry\, Ph.D.\, the Israel Munson Professor of Physics and Astronomy and director of the Yale Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics\, will present\, “Black Holes\, Galaxies\, and the Evolution of the Universe.” \nBlack holes form at the centers of galaxies in the young Universe and\, over the next 13 billion years\, they grow together by factors of a million or more in mass. This growth generates energy that can affect galaxy evolution\, including that of the Milky Way galaxy in which we live. In this talk\, Urry will describe how recent “wedding cake” X-ray+infrared+optical surveys of the sky have led to a quantitative description of black hole growth over the last ~12 billion years. Most Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are heavily obscured and thus look like inactive galaxies in optical surveys\, so our census effectively quadruples the amount of accretion\, and thus the amount of energy deposited in AGN host galaxies. However\, contrary to leading models\, our data suggest that for only a minority of galaxies does merger-triggered AGN “feedback” cause rapid quenching of star formation.

SUMMARY:The Quality of Mercy: Justice\, Forgiveness\, and Public Discourse—Debating Repentance and Redemption in an Era of “Cancel Culture”
DESCRIPTION:Critics across the political spectrum are decrying a new wave of censoriousness and intolerance in American society: a “cancel culture” that they say inhibits public discourse and development. But is the heart of the problem also spiritual and religious? Are we witnessing a kind of “neo-Puritanism” that has deep roots in U.S. culture? And can religious traditions point a way toward a solution? Can we recover the practices of repentance\, forgiveness\, and redemption that are central to the great spiritual teachings? \nThis panel of distinguished writers and scholars examines the state of America’s soul and remedies for our current predicament. \nPanelists \n\nThe Rev. Charles Howard is the University Chaplain at the University of Pennsylvania and a widely published writer who sees his vocation as working for “a communal increase in joy\, peace\, justice\, and love.”\nRabbi Danya Ruttenberg\, of the National Council of Jewish Women\, is an award-winning author whose latest book\, to be published in fall 2022\, is titled On Repentance and Repair: Making Amends in an Unapologetic World.\nStephen Pope is a professor of theology at Boston College and a popular speaker who teaches and writes regularly on issues of mercy and forgiveness.\n\nDavid Gibson\, director of Fordham’s Center on Religion and Culture\, will moderate the discussion\, including questions from the online audience

SUMMARY:Catholic Discordance: Dialogue or Division
DESCRIPTION:Massimo Borghesi\, a moral philosopher at the University of Perugia\, has published Catholic Discordance: Neoconservatism vs. the Field Hospital Church of Pope Francis. The book is a history of the rise to prominence of conservatism in the U.S. Catholic Church. How will the U.S. church respond to Francis’ call for “synodality”—dialog of renewal and discernment among the whole of the people of God? Can the spirit of Vatican II be rekindled here? Can the social justice mission of the church be protected and renewed? Is the U.S. church\, like the polity\, headed for soft schism? \nWe invite you for a conversation with the author and theologian professor Massimo Faggioli (Villanova University)\, professor Michael Baur (Fordham University)\, and moral theologian Thomas Massaro\, S.J.\, (Fordham University). The panel will be moderated by George Conk\, senior fellow at Fordham’s Stein Center for Law and Ethics.

Watson Foundation\, the Tokyo Foundation\, the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation\, and the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). Istratii specializes in Eastern Orthodox and pre-Chalcedonian (also known as Oriental Orthodox) Christian churches and traditions and is particularly versed in Orthodox theology of gender\, marriage\, and the conjugal relationship having studied thoroughly the works of St John Chrysostom. Her work is especially interested in integrating theological and exegetical responses to domestic violence alleviation programs in Orthodox Christian and other religious societies. \nIstratii has previously written on the ethics of international development\, western gender metaphysics and religious knowledge systems\, and the discourse of fundamentalism in gender studies. Inter alia\, she has authored the journal article “Beyond a feminist ‘hermeneutics of suspicion’: Reading St John Chrysostom’s commentaries on man-woman relations\, marriage\, and conjugal abuse through the Orthodox phronema” (SOAS University of London) and the monograph “Adapting Gender and Development to Local Religious Contexts: A Decolonial Approach to Domestic Violence in Ethiopia” (Routledge\, 2020). \nIstratii established and edits with the support of theology students in Addis Ababa an Amharic webpage on Orthodox dogmatics and is the principal investigator of Project dldl/ድልድል\, which is dedicated to the development and strengthening of religio-culturally sensitive domestic violence alleviation systems in Ethiopia\, Eritrea\, and the UK. She is also the first alumna of the Gingko Fellowship\, which is awarded to top divinity scholars in the UK to promote knowledge exchange and inter-faith dialogue with Islamic scholars at Al-Azhar University in Egypt.

SUMMARY:Why Health Professions Need Fordham Students with Health Conditions and Disabilities
DESCRIPTION:Disabilities are defined as health conditions that substantially impair bodily functions. Health professionals exert enormous influence over the lives of people with disabilities by providing health care\, and by generating research and information about them that forms the basis for policies and practices that affect their everyday lives. In this 20-minute talk followed by Q&A\, Nicholas D. Lawson\, M.D.\, J.D.\, will explain why the health professions need persons with health conditions and disabilities and need disability studies to make their policies and practices reflect the priorities of those purported to benefit from them. He will describe some of the professions’ existing barriers\, recent progress\, and invite audience questions and ideas at the end of the talk. \nLawson is a former psychiatry resident\, a person with a disability (dyslexia\, ADHD\, generalized anxiety disorder)\, and a disability advocate who serves as commissioner on the American Bar Association Commission on Disability Rights. He has written many articles on disability inclusion within the medical and legal professions and is a Georgetown Law scholar who will be teaching disability studies at Fordham for the first time this fall.

SUMMARY:IPED CFR Series: Global Climate Policy
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Council on Foreign Relations Academic Conference Call with Jody Freeman\, the Archibald Cox Professor of Law at Harvard Law School and a leading scholar of administrative law and environmental law. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, a fellow of the American College of Environmental Lawyers\, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Freeman served as counselor for energy and climate change during President Barack Obama’s administration\, from 2009 to 2010. \nProfessor Freeman has written extensively about climate change\, environmental regulation\, and executive power. She is also known for her early work on “collaborative governance\,” which helped to establish a field focused on public-private approaches to regulatory problems. She has served as a member of the Administrative Conference of the United States\, an expert body that advises the federal government on how to improve the regulatory and administrative process. At Harvard Law School\, she is the founding director of the Environmental and Energy Law program\, a pioneering research center on climate and energy policy. She also established the law school’s first environmental law clinic. \nFreeman has been recognized as the second-most-cited scholar in public law in the nation. Her book\, Global Climate Change and U.S. Law (co-edited with Michael Gerrard)\, was published in 2015\, and she has produced several other books on topics ranging from market mechanisms of environmental regulation to privatization of government functions. She is widely published in leading American law reviews and co-authors a leading casebook in administrative law. A volume of her administrative law articles was published in Chinese in 2010. \nWhile in the White House\, Freeman was the architect of the president’s historic agreement with the auto industry to double fuel efficiency standards and set the first federal greenhouse gas standards\, which launched the Obama administration’s climate program under the Clean Air Act. She also contributed to a host of initiatives on renewable energy\, energy efficiency\, transmission policy\, and oil and gas drilling\, as well as the administration’s effort to pass legislation placing a market-based cap on carbon. After leaving the administration\, she served as an independent consultant to the president’s bipartisan commission on the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico\, advising the commission on structural reforms at the Department of the Interior. \nIn addition to her duties at Harvard Law School\, Freeman is an independent director of ConocoPhillips\, where she chairs the Public Policy Committee and serves on the Directors’ Affairs and Executive committees. She also serves on the Advisory Council of the Electric Power Research Institute\, advising the electricity industry on technology gaps and broader social needs that would benefit from pioneering research. \nProfessor Freeman consults regularly for government and nongovernmental parties\, advising on litigation and regulatory strategy. She has lectured broadly around the world\, including at the Nobel Institute\, and in Asia and Europe. She can be heard regularly on NPR and on various podcasts on public affairs\, has appeared on MSNBC and CNN\, and has written for The New York Times\, Wall Street Journal\, Guardian\, Los Angeles Times\, Politico\, Vox\, and Foreign Affairs.

SUMMARY:Forever Learning Week 2022: What Would Ignatius Tweet?
DESCRIPTION:Survey after survey tells us that Americans disagree more than ever before\, viscerally and sometimes even violently. At a moment when issues like LGBTQ+ rights\, religious freedom\, racial and economic justice\, and even the rules of democracy seem to be up for debate\, can Fordham’s Jesuit tradition offer wisdom? Join Patrick Hornbeck\, interim dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences\, theology professor\, and Fordham Law student\, for a conversation about what Ignatius of Loyola might say about our world today.

SUMMARY:Our Lady: Catholic Billie Holiday
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture and concert featuring the Fordham Jazz Quartet. Iconic jazz artist Billie Holiday received her only formal vocal instruction at the Catholic convent where she was sent to live as a child. She received the sacraments\, prayed the rosary\, and maintained a friendship with Paulist “jazz priest” Norman O’Connor until the end of her life. Tracy Fessenden\, the author of Religion Around Billie Holiday\, discusses Lady Day’s Catholic immersions and the difference they made for her life and sound\, her reception\, and the history of American music
