SUMMARY:An Anti-Oppression Framework for Social Work Practice
DESCRIPTION:Social workers are well-positioned to provide high-quality\, culturally responsive care rooted in an anti-oppression framework that attends to historic harms. In fact\, it is an obligation of a profession that is rooted in social justice. Yet social workers still cause harm and are complicit to racism in micro\, mezzo\, and macro practice. This two-part class will introduce and build upon concepts\, theoretical foundations\, and social work history to build a platform by which social workers can actively engage in social work practice rooted in anti-oppression and contribute to decolonizing across systems. The class will provide opportunities for participants to engage in self-reflection and interrogate the roots of social work practice. \nFour continuing education hours will be offered upon completion of the course.

DESCRIPTION:Before 1870\, much of humanity lived in dire poverty\, with a slow crawl of invention offset by a growing population. Then came a great shift: Invention sprinted forward\, doubling our technological capabilities each generation and utterly transforming the economy again and again. Our ancestors would have presumed we’d use such powers to build a utopia. But it was not so. Instead\, when the period between 1870 and 2010 ended\, the world saw climate change; economic depression\, uncertainty\, and inequality; and broad rejection of the status quo. \nEconomist Brad DeLong’s Slouching Towards Utopia tells the story of how this unprecedented explosion of material wealth occurred\, how it transformed the globe\, and why it failed to deliver us to utopia. Of remarkable breadth and ambition\, it reveals the last century to have been less a march of progress than a slouch in the right direction. \nThis event is co-sponsored with the CFA Society New York and the Museum of American Finance.

DESCRIPTION:Every year for Black History Month\, the Department of African and African American Studies at Fordham University invites a guest speaker to address the Fordham community. This year’s keynote speaker is Khiara M. Bridges\, Ph.D.\, J.D.\, who will discuss critical race theory and the important place of Black studies in the present and future. Bridges is a law professor at the UC Berkeley School of Law\, where she specializes in race and gender in the law. She is an American civil rights advocate and a leading scholar of critical race theory. Her book Critical Race Theory: A Primer (Concepts and Insights) explores the origin\, development\, and debates surrounding critical race theory.

In early February\, he was a guest on the Indian Parliamentary News program Global Debate\, discussing the recent trend in tech layoffs.

As African American publications across the country had not failed to observe\, there were parallels between racial segregation practices and the Nuremberg Laws.

SUMMARY:Caring for Caregivers Who Support Suicidal Loved Ones
DESCRIPTION:This class introduces a three-step suicide caregiver support model that gives providers a framework for how to work with caregivers of persons who are thinking about suicide The process starts with helping caregivers prepare their care approach by reflecting on their own personal experiences and beliefs. Next\, caregivers are equipped with skills and resources to support their loved ones. Lastly\, discussions around how to implement a self-care plan\, including setting limits\, help caregivers sustain their own wellness. Participants will learn practical tools to help them implement each step of this holistic model. Challenges to working with caregivers will also be explored. \nUpon completion of this class\, social workers will be equipped with tools to support suicide caregivers in both community and individual settings. This class is designed to guide experienced providers in expanding existing interventions to include family members and caregivers when caring for individuals who are thinking about suicide. Participants in a wide range of practice settings may benefit from learning this framework for their practice. \nThree continuing education hours will be offered upon completion of the course.

SUMMARY:Choice in Dying: Current Legal\, Policy\, and Ethical Issues
DESCRIPTION:Many patients\, particularly at the end of life\, do not receive quality care. Palliative and hospice care are not often provided in a timely manner\, if at all. Additionally\, the healthcare wishes of patients are often not honored\, and dying patients may receive interventions they never wanted. Patients who experience intolerable suffering may not know of options that could reduce their suffering and allow them to die with dignity\, in accordance with their values and wishes. In order to make informed decisions about end-of-life care\, patients must be given information about the expected benefits and burdens of proposed interventions\, as well as the consequences of changing the focus of care to comfort. This class will present legal options that permit patients control over the timing of their own death\, including voluntarily stopping eating and drinking (VSED). Social workers can play an important role as catalysts for better quality care for patients at the end of life to ensure that their healthcare wishes are respected. \nFour continuing education hours will be offered upon completion of the course.

Pope Francis\, in his encyclical letter Laudato Si’\, focused on these concepts and stressed the need to safeguard our environment to ensure that while we meet the needs of the present generation\, we also do not compromise the needs of the future generation. The discussion panel will include Endashaw Debrework\, S.J.\, Wendy Omanga\, and Tione Matthews Phwandaphwanda. \nAbout the Speakers\nEndashaw Debrework\, S.J.\, is a Jesuit priest of the eastern Africa province. He is the executive deputy director at Jesuit Hakimani Centre in Nairobi\, Kenya. Hakimani is a Jesuit center for social transformation comprising Uganda\, Tanzania\, Ethiopia\, South Sudan\, Kenya\, and Sudan. At the social center\, Debrework oversees policy dialogue initiatives\, advocacy influencing\, and humanitarian efforts and supports the general implementation of projects. \nWendy Omanga is a youth activist and impact entrepreneur from Nairobi\, Kenya. She is the\nfounder and CEO of Moonlight Initiative\, a commercial forestry nonprofit that seeks to\nrestore riparian ecosystems while also providing an alternative income source to small-scale\nfarmers. Inspired by the social and environmental teachings of Pope Francis\, Omanga is a\nfounding member of the Economy of Francesco’s Africa Hub. \nTione Phwandaphwanda is an environmental specialist and community development\nworker who has been passionately working with the most vulnerable communities for more than\nnine years\, transforming their lives in the face of the impacts of climate change. He is a\nsenior project officer at the Jesuit Center for Ecology and Development (JCED) in Lilongwe\,\nMalawi\, where he works in the center’s resilience-building program.

SUMMARY:Voices from the Amazon: Activists on Protecting the Indigenous and Healing the Planet
DESCRIPTION:The fate of the Amazon rainforest is tied to the fate of our planet: The vast region touches eight different South American countries plus French Guiana and is home to more than 2 million indigenous peoples from almost 400 traditional nations. Moreover\, the health of Amazonia’s ecosystem is key to the ecological health of the entire world. \nIf nations can work in concert to protect at-risk human rights and rescue the unique biodiversity of the Amazon\, then we can make great steps in advancing social peace and the common good—as well as saving our common home. \nThis panel of distinguished religious leaders\, activists\, and theologians working to heal the Amazon will discuss the current crisis and prospects for change—and reasons for hope. Many of our speakers are in New York for the March 2023 United Nations Water Conference. \nPanelists \nPedro Barreto\, S.J.\, Archbishop of Huancayo in Peru\, is president of the newly created Ecclesial Conference of the Amazon (CEAMA) and a member of the Board of the Amazonic University Program (PUAM). He is an outspoken defender of human rights and the Amazonian environment and works closely with Pope Francis on these issues. \nPatricia Gualinga is widely known for her work as a defender of the human rights of the Kichwa People of Sarayaku\, an indigenous community in the Ecuadorian Amazon. She is also vice president of CEAMA and a member of the Amazonic University Program. \nFernando Ponce\, S.J.\, is president of the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador. He is a board member of AUSJAL\, the association of 30 Jesuit universities in Latin America. \nCarol Jeri is the human rights coordinator for Caritas\, the Catholic Church’s development and relief network in Madre de Dios in the Peruvian Amazon\, and a participant of the Human Rights School of the Panamazon Ecclesial Network (REPAM). \nChristiana Zenner is an associate professor of theology at Fordham University who writes widely on religious ecological ethics.
