SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Maureen E. Raymo\, Ph.D.\, Bruce C. Heezen/Lamont Research Professor and director of the Lamont-Doherty Core Repository at Columbia University\, will present\, “Climate\, CO2\, and Sea Level: Past is Prologue.” \nThe Earth is running a fever. The ongoing pollution of our atmosphere by an invisible odorless gas called carbon dioxide is trapping heat at the Earth’s surface and causing temperatures to rise on land and in the ocean. The polar regions are warming fastest of all and the melting ice sheets are causing sea levels to rise around the globe. This talk will review evidence for climate change—natural and human-caused—and explore how ice sheets and sea level changed in the past. How fast the climate changes in the future will depend on our collective actions as individuals\, families\, communities\, and governments.

SUMMARY:Investing In Financial Research: A Decision-Making System For Better Results with Cheryl Einhorn
DESCRIPTION:Got financial decisions to make? Learn how to invest in financial research with author Cheryl Einhorn at this book lecture sponsored by the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis. \nEvery day\, people around the world make financial decisions. They choose to invest in a stock\, sell their holdings in a mutual fund\, or buy a condominium. These decisions are complex and financially tricky—even for financial professionals. But the literature available on financial research is dated and narrowly focused without any real practical application. Until now there’s been a gap in the literature—a book that shows you how to conduct a step-by-step comprehensive financial investigation that ends in a decision. \nThis book gives you that how. \nInvesting in Financial Research is a guidebook for conducting financial investigations and lays out Cheryl Strauss Einhorn’s AREA Method—a research and decision-making system that uniquely controls for bias\, focuses on the incentives of others and expands knowledge while improving judgement—and applies it to investigating financial situations. AREA is applicable to all sorts of financial sleuthing\, whether for investment analysis or investigative journalism. It allows you to be the expert in your own life. \nFirst 100 attendees will receive a free copy of the book. \nAbout the Author: \nCheryl Strauss Einhorn is the creator of the AREA Method\, a decision making system for individuals and companies to solve complex problems. She is the founder of CSE Consulting and the author of the award-winning book Problem Solved: A Powerful System for Making Complex Decisions with Confidence & Conviction. Einhorn teaches as an adjunct professor at Columbia Business School and has won several journalism awards for her investigative stories about international political\, business and economic topics. Although many of our world’s problems may seem too great and too complex to solve—inequality\, climate change\, affordable housing\, corruption\, healthcare\, food insecurity—solutions to these challenges do exist\, and will be found through new partnerships bringing together leaders from the public\, private\, and philanthropic sectors. \nDress is business attire and strictly enforced by The University Club. \nAbout the Author: \nHoward W. Buffett is an adjunct associate professor and research scholar at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. He served as the executive director of the Howard G. Bishop created a new global institute that brought together diverse voices from around the world to shine a light on big ideas\, and help to rapidly\nimplement scalable solutions to improve the lives of the most vulnerable people. Previously\, he spent more than 25 years at The Economist\, serving in roles such as U.S. Business Editor\, New York Bureau Chief and global business editor. Through a variety of writing\, editorial\, and leadership roles\, he has committed himself to turning good ideas into forceful action. Bishop cofounded the Social Progress\nIndex\, helped to launch the #GivingTuesday campaign\, and was a member of the G8 Taskforce on Social Impact Investing. He is the co-author of several books\, including Philanthrocapitalism: How Giving Can Save the World and The Road From Ruin. SUMMARY:What Time is it in Heaven? God’s Time in Ancient Judaism and Why It Matters
DESCRIPTION:In this “In Dialogue” joint lecture\, Lynn Kaye\, author of Time in the Babylonian Talmud (Cambridge University Press\, 2018)\, and Sarit Kattan Gribetz\, author of Time and Difference in Rabbinic Judaism (Princeton University Press\, forthcoming)\, engage in a conversation about the ways in which rabbinic texts reflect on God’s time. \nDoes God exist in time? How does God tell time? What is God’s daily schedule? Through a series of surprising sources—at once playful and moving—they will explore how ancient Jews conceived of the divine and why it matters for how we understand Jewish theology.

SUMMARY:Physics and Engineering Physics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Matthew Szydagis\, Ph.D.\, of the State University of New York at Albany\, will present\, “Lab Detection of Dark Matter From The Cosmos.” \nThe nature of dark matter has remained an enduring enigma for over eight decades now\, for both cosmology and astroparticle physics. The majority of cosmic mass\, over 85%\, does not shine in the stars nor exist in atomic form. A continued lack of unambiguous evidence from a direct detection experiment of the traditional Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) has led to a major thrust to consider masses both higher and lower than before\, driven by many hypotheses and models. \nSzydagis will summarize his work on the LUX (Large Underground Xenon) experiment and its multi–ton scale successor\, LZ\, currently under construction underground. He will also discuss the microphysics simulations of NEST (Noble Element Simulation Technique) used to make predictions for signals in a liquid xenon–based detector\, and emphasize new research and development at Albany using water to look for dark matter lighter than the canonical WIMP particle. This research and development effort relies critically upon nanotechnology for water purification.

SUMMARY:GSS Continuing Education: Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias
DESCRIPTION:The goal of this class is to provide an introduction and overview of the topic\, including the definition of Alzheimer’s disease and identification of related dementias; the multilevel effect of dementia on individuals and their family members; interventions for effective practice; and community agencies and resources. Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias are significant health issues faced by many individuals and their families. The often incurable nature of the disease\, long trajectory of the illness\, and usually silent symptoms during the onset all contribute to making dementia\, which includes Alzheimer’s disease\, one of the most difficult experiences for both the individual and the family caregivers. Social workers who work with older adults and family caregivers must be knowledgeable about dementia diagnoses\, including Alzheimer’s disease. Understanding the physical trajectory and symptomatology of dementia\, and the psychosocial\, financial\, and other consequences of dementia are critical to effective practice. \nParticipants will be able to: \n\nIdentify the etiology and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.\nIdentify the trajectory of Alzheimer’s disease.\nDescribe the cumulative impact of dementia on the family system and the multiple factors affecting caregiving.\nIdentify appropriate interventions to assist individuals with dementia and their families in future planning for health care decisions that are based on the unique needs of clients.

SUMMARY:Fordham-NYPL Lecture Series in Jewish Studies: David Assaf on "Childhood\, Diaspora\, and Zionism"
DESCRIPTION:David Assaf\, a professor from Tel Aviv University\, will discuss a treasure trove of some ninety letters written in 1935 by Polish Jewish children\, around 12 to 13 years old\, who studied in the Tarbut school north of Warsaw to their teacher who immigrated to Palestine. These moving letters of elementary school pupils—not young adults like those who participated in YIVO competitions for autobiographies—offer a very rare glimpse into childhood of Jewish children in interwar Poland. \nThe lecture\, titled “To My Beloved Teacher in Eretz Israel: Childhood\, Diaspora\, and Zionism in Letters Written by Hebrew School Pupils in Interwar Poland\,” is a part of the Fordham-New York Public Library lecture series.
