SUMMARY:James Grant on “Bagehot: The Life and Times of the Greatest Victorian”
DESCRIPTION:During the upheavals of 2007–2009\, the Federal Reserve chairman had the name of a Victorian icon on the tip of his tongue: Walter Bagehot. Banker\, man of letters\, inventor of the Treasury bill and author of Lombard Street\, the still-canonical guide to stopping a run on the banks\, Bagehot prescribed the doctrines that―decades later―inspired the radical responses to the world’s worst financial crises. \nBorn in the small market town of Langport\, just after the Panic of 1825 swept across England\, Bagehot followed in his father’s footsteps and took a position at the local family bank―but his influence on financial matters would soon spread far beyond the county of Somerset. Persuasive and precocious\, he came to hold sway in political circles\, making high-profile friends\, including William Gladstone\, and enemies\, such as Lord Overstone and Benjamin Disraeli. As a prolific essayist on wide-ranging topics\, Bagehot won the admiration of Matthew Arnold and Woodrow Wilson\, and delighted in paradox. He was also a misogynist\, and while he opposed slavery\, he misjudged Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War. As editor of The Economist\, he offered astute commentary on the financial issues of his day\, and his name lives on in an eponymous weekly column. \nAbout the Author\nJames Grant\, financial journalist and historian\, is the founder and editor of Grant’s Interest Rate Observer\, a twice-monthly journal of the investment markets. His book\, The Forgotten Depression\, 1921: The Crash That Cured Itself\, a history of America’s last governmentally unmedicated business-cycle downturn\, won the 2015 Hayek Prize of the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research. His latest book is Bagehot: The Life and Times of the Greatest Victorian (W.W. Norton & Company\, July 2019). \nThis talk is followed by a reception. Doors open at 5:30 pm. SUMMARY:'Physicists in Action: Shaping the Future of Telecommunication'
DESCRIPTION:Guest speaker Mehdi Namazi\, Ph.D.\, post-doc at Yale in the Quantum Institute and co-founder and CEO of Qunnect (a company working on quantum communications)\, will present “Physicists in Action: Shaping the Future of Telecommunication.” \nSince the birth of civilization\, cybersecurity has been at the center of the focus of every government. On paper\, it is a simple problem; as long as you have a secret key shared between two parties\, you can securely communicate. In reality though\, one way or another\, you have to share the secret key and to make sure it really is secret! So far\, specific mathematical methods have been commonly used to share a key over public channels. These methods typically rely on mathematical equations that are fast to create the cypher text but are extremely time-consuming for a hacker to decode\, a famous example being factorizing a large number into two prime numbers\, the base of almost all encryptions we use today. \nAs the computational power rises\, it gets easier to hack these networks. For instance\, a code that takes 500 years to be broken by a supercomputer today can be cracked in less than eight minutes on a future quantum processor. A very innovative solution is to replace the mathematical-based protocols with physical-based ones. In this talk\, I will go briefly over the work physicists have done to address the key challenges in cybersecurity. Laws of quantum physics such as superposition\, entanglement\, and teleportation allow us to create the next generation of telecom technologies\, globally known as quantum communication.

DESCRIPTION:Theological Education in the Twenty-First Century \nThe Very Rev. Dr. John Behr\nFather Georges Florovsky Distinguished Professor of Patristics\nSt. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary \n“Go and teach” has been a mandate for all Christians from the beginning\, being at the heart of spreading the Gospel. Yet the context in which this mandate is carried out continually changes\, always presenting new challenges\, especially in the 21st century. If previous centuries were torn apart\, as Edward Gibbon jested\, over an “iota” (the difference between homoousios and homoiousios)\, we face broader\, more profound\, and more disturbing challenges today. In a “post-truth” era\, riven by factionalism and polarization\, how do we teach the truth that sets us free and find the freedom for which we are set free? \nIn this year’s Orthodoxy in America Lecture\, Father Behr will explore the task before us\, that of continuing the past century’s renaissance of theological reflection and education\, which has taken place largely in the West but has deep roots in Eastern Orthodox history. The increasing contexts\, institutional homes\, and platforms in which Orthodox theology is taught offer us possibilities not envisioned before\, yet it is only by returning to “the Word delivered in the beginning” (St. Polycarp) that the coherence of theology can again be found and the teaching of theology flourish.

But if you want to advance in your career\, you’ll need to make smart financial decisions and develop the confidence to clearly communicate those decisions to others. \nIn “How Finance Works”\, Mihir Desai\, a professor at Harvard Business School and author of “The Wisdom of Finance”\, guides you into the complex but endlessly fascinating world of finance\, demystifying it in the process. \nAbout the Author\nMihir A. Desai is the Mizuho Financial Group Professor of Finance at Harvard Business School and Professor of Law at Harvard Law School. He received his Ph.D. in political economy from Harvard University; his MBA as a Baker Scholar from Harvard Business School; and a bachelor’s degree in history and economics from Brown University. In 1994\, he was a Fulbright Scholar to India. \nProfessor Desai’s areas of expertise include tax policy\, international finance\, and corporate finance. He is a Research Associate in the National Bureau of Economic Research’s Public Economics and Corporate Finance Programs\, and served as the co-director of the NBER’s India program. He has testified several times to Congressional bodies on various tax policy questions. \nProfessor Desai has taught extensively as an award-winning teacher at HBS and at Harvard University. He has taught public economics and entrepreneurship to undergraduates\, finance and international finance to MBA students and executives\, and tax law and policy to law students. Recently\, Professor Desai created an online finance course through the HBX platform titled Leading with Finance. His books include The Wisdom of Finance: Discovering Humanity in the World of Risk and Return\, published in May 2017\, and How Finance Works\, published in 2019. \nHis professional experiences include working at CS First Boston\, McKinsey & Co.\, and advising a number of firms and governmental organizations. \nThe talk is followed by a reception. Doors open at 5:30 pm. The first 100 attendees will receive a copy of the book.
