SUMMARY:Jewish Studies Book Club featuring Jessica Marglin\, “Across Legal Lines: Jews and Muslims in Modern Morocco”
DESCRIPTION:Across Legal Lines: Jews and Muslims in Modern Morocco\, which won the 2017–2018 National Jewish Book Award in Sephardic Culture and the 2016 Baron Book Prize from the American Academy for Jewish Research\, examines Jewish–Muslim relations in Morocco by following the Assarrafs\, a Judeo-Morrocan merchant family from Fez\, in the late 19th and early 20th century\, a time of upheaval in Morocco. Jessica Marglin demonstrates that Jews used the courts and law to integrate into Muslim society until European colonial powers intervened. Through a legal lens\, Marglin challenges common perceptions of Jewish history\, Jewish–Muslim relations\, the Middle East\, and the nature of legal pluralism. Join us for an evening conversation with Jessica Marglin about her award-winning book. \nCopies of the book can be purchased at the Fordham Bookstore at Lincoln Center (113 West 60th Street) or online at yalebooks.com with a 25% discount (code for online purchases YZ979). CUNY graduate students and Fordham students and faculty can request copies of their books free of charge by contacting jewishstudies@fordham.edu. \nThe Jewish Studies Book Club is a joint initiative of The Graduate Center\, CUNY\, and Fordham University\, in collaboration with the New York Public Library.

SUMMARY:Salo Baron New Voices in Jewish Studies: Noam Shoked
DESCRIPTION:In the news\, the conversation about the Israeli–Palestinian conflict often revolves around the settlements built in the West Bank\, which Israel conquered from Jordan in 1967. Very little\, however\, is said about the actual design and construction of the settlements and their relationship to Zionism\, as well as to the tradition of modernist architecture that developed in Israel. \nThis talk looks at the design of one of the first settlements built in the West Bank\, at a time when Israelis were still debating the administrative fate of the occupied territories. While government officials were hesitant to populate the West Bank with Israelis\, activists advocated for building settlements\, whether out of a desire to be close to Biblical sites or to be close to Arab culture. Meanwhile\, professional architects preferred ignoring the West Bank. This talk examines the debates that emerged between these different groups and the architectural forms that resulted from those debates. It takes the case of the Jewish settlement of Hebron in order to show how a political landscape that we take for granted today came about in contingent and unexpected ways.

SUMMARY:Physics and Engineering Physics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Jason Bini\, Ph.D.\, associate research scientist at Yale University and a Fordham alum (FCRH ’06)\, will present “Positron Emission Tomography: From Antimatter to Medical Imaging.” \nThe positron\, first theorized by Paul Dirac in 1928 and later experimentally confirmed by Carl David Anderson (1936 Nobel Prize)\, has unique properties that have been harnessed to create a powerful imaging technique that is utilized to understand human physiology and disease. The lecture will survey a number of aspects where physics and engineering principles are harnessed to create and understand 3D images of living beings and possible future advancements in this field. Bini will also touch on a few concrete examples of how\, in his own research\, he is harnessing positron emission tomography to understand the pathophysiology of diabetes and obesity.

SUMMARY:Crispina and Her Sisters: An Evening with Christine Schenk
DESCRIPTION:In her acclaimed book Crispina and Her Sisters\, author Christine Schenk\, C.S.J.\, explores the history of women’s roles in early Christianity\, as well as the authority that women exercised in the ancient church. Looking closely at the visual imagery found on the burial artifacts of these early Christian women\, Schenk demonstrates how they and those around them regarded them as influential leaders within the church. \nJoin us for an evening of dialogue and conversation with Schenk\, where we will delve into this fascinating history and ask what it means for Christian communities today. As a columnist for the National Catholic Reporter and the retired co-founder of FutureChurch\, Schenk brings to Fordham wisdom and experience in talking about the role of women in the church. \nThis event is complimentary.

SUMMARY:Full of Hope: One Refugee’s Journey of Survival\, Resilience\, and Education
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Mireille Twayigira’s story is one of both survival and resilience. A refugee who had to flee from the Rwandan conflict\, Twayigira spent much of her early childhood in search of a home. After a tragic and difficult journey in which she lost her sister\, mother\, and grandmother\, Twayigira found hope through education. She received an education through Jesuit Refugee Service at Dzaleka camp in Malawi\, which led to a scholarship to medical school in China. Now Twayigira\, who says she was “meant to serve others\,” uses her medical degree and her story to help others heal and maintain hope. \nJoin Jesuit Refugee Service/USA to hear Twayigira’s inspiring story and what can be done to ensure more children forced to flee from crisis and conflict can receive an education and an opportunity for a hopeful future. \nCo-sponsored by the Fordham University Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs.
