SUMMARY:Hobart-Ives Lecture Series: The New Evangelization: One Priest’s Approach
DESCRIPTION:Father Joseph Gill Biography: \nCurrently the chaplain at Trinity Catholic High School in Stamford\, Connecticut\, Father Joseph Gill is a man with a mission. A pilgrimage to Rome at the age of 14 transformed his life. “I remember standing in the Coliseum\, realizing that over 10\,000 people shed their blood for Jesus on that very spot… What can I do with my life to glorify God?” he asked himself. A graduate of Franciscan University of Steubenville and Mount St. Mary’s University\, Father Gill was ordained a priest in 2013 for the Diocese of Bridgeport. A singer and musician (keyboard and guitar)\, he has produced several albums of Christian rock. He is also a blogger who has inspired many followers on the internet\, and is author of Days of Grace\, a spiritual novel of suspense. In all of his activities\, Father Gill wishes to share his profound and personal encounter with Jesus Christ. “I want to give my life to him and to make him known and loved\, so that he may set souls ablaze with a passion for holiness.”

SUMMARY:What Happened? Why? What Now?: Clergy Sexual Abuse in the Catholic Church
DESCRIPTION:A distinguished panel of speakers will reflect on the ongoing Catholic clergy sexual abuse crises from their particular scholarly and professional vantage points—psychology\, law\, theology\, religious journalism\, and ethics. This conversation is especially timely in light of the recently released Pennsylvania Grand Jury report and a wider spate of revelations in the United States and around the world about clergy abuse and its concealment. By asking three fundamental questions—”What?” “Why?” and “What now?”—this event seeks to contribute to well-informed and effective responses by and from Catholics\, citizens\, and all who are impacted by this reality.

SUMMARY:This Decisive Hour: Martin Luther King Jr.'s Theological Vision in a "Colorblind" Age with Michelle Alexander
DESCRIPTION:The inaugural Fordham Theology 1000 First-Year Experience Lecture features a conversation with Michelle Alexander\, author of The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness\, and Dr. Bryan Massingale\, James and Nancy Buckman Chair of Applied Christian Ethics at Fordham and author of Racial Justice and the Catholic Church. Sponsored by the Fordham theology department with generous support from Fordham’s chief diversity officer\, Rafael Zapata\, the event will provide a shared intellectual experience for all students enrolled in Theology 1000: Faith and Critical Reason. In 2018-2019\, all sections of the course are reading Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham City Jail\,” a classic and timely work of theological reasoning\, social critique\, and prophetic witness. The conversation between Alexander and Massingale will bring our students together to reflect on the ongoing relevance of King’s challenge to church and society\, and to explore the role that theological discourses and spiritual practices might play in confronting racial injustice and violence. \nThe conversation will be simulcast from Leonard Theater to Keating First Lecture Hall at Rose Hill and to McNally Amphitheatre and the Lowenstein 12th Floor Lounge at Lincoln Center. Guests at all four locations will have the opportunity to relay questions to our speakers.
