SUMMARY:From Galileo to Laudato Si’: Why Science Needs Faith
DESCRIPTION:Guy Consolmagno\, S.J.\, Director of the Vatican Observatory delivering The John C. and Jeanette D. Walton Lecture in Science\, Philosophy\, and Religion at Fordham University. \nGuy Consolmagno is a planetary scientist\, the director of the Vatican Observatory\, and president of the Vatican Observatory Foundation. He is the author of over 200 scientific publications\, and several popular books including Would You Baptize an Extraterrestrial? (with Paul Mueller\, SJ) and Turn Left at Orion (with Dan Davis). He has hosted science programs for BBC Radio\, has been interviewed in numerous documentary films\, has appeared on The Colbert Report\, and writes a monthly science column for The Tablet. He is the 2014 recipient of the Carl Sagan Medal from the American Astronomical Society. \nLogic and reason must always start with assumptions\, and the assumptions behind science are\, at their root\, religious assumptions. Our core beliefs not only determine how we expect the universe to work; they also and just as importantly supply the motivation for the science we do\, and indeed they determine why we as individuals choose to be scientists. The nature of how we understand this relationship\, however\, has changed radically from the time of Galileo\, when science was still being invented; and that change continues to this day\, as can be seen in the way Pope Francis has blended science and faith in his recent encyclical Laudato Si’. \nA reception immediately follows the lecture. \nRSVP online by Monday\, February 19\, 2018.

SUMMARY:Emerging Voices in Jewish Studies: Marc Herman
DESCRIPTION:Legal Theory and Revelation: Jewish Law in an Islamic Milieu\nA Lecture by Marc Herman\, with responses by Kathryn Kueny\, Professor of Theology\, and Jed Shugerman\, Professor of Law \nMedieval Jews in the Islamic world were the first to pen systematic accounts of revelation and the rabbinic tradition. This lecture explores two competing accounts of Sinaitic revelation authored by two of the outstanding jurists and philosophers of the Jewish Middle Ages\, Saèadya ben Joseph Gaon and Moses Maimonides. While both thinkers implicitly asserted the timelessness of their ideas\, this lecture situates these two narratives of revelation and presentations of the role of the Talmudic rabbis within contemporaneous developments and trends in the Islamic legal tradition. Though cloaked in rabbinic garb\, these dueling attempts to theorize revelation were both innovative and profoundly contemporary. \nMarc Herman\, Ph.D.\, is the Rabin-Shvidler Joint Post-Doctoral Fellow in Jewish Studies at Fordham and Columbia. He graduated from the Department of Religious Studies of the University of Pennsylvania in 2016. His dissertation\, “Systematizing God’s Law: Rabbanite Jurisprudence in the Islamic World from the Tenth to the Thirteenth Centuries\,” examines Jewish legal theory in the Islamic world\, with a particular focus on medieval approaches to the Oral Torah. His dissertation was named as a finalist for the Association for Jewish Studies Dissertation Completion Fellowship\, and in the past\, he has been awarded fellowships from the Knapp Family Foundation\, the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture\, the Cardozo Center for Jewish Law\, and the Wexner Foundation. He has taught at the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University\, and he has forthcoming articles in The Jewish Quarterly Review and Jewish History. \nThis is a joint event of Fordham’s Program for Jewish Studies\, the Institute on Religion\, Law and Lawyer’s Work\, and Columbia University’s Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies.

DESCRIPTION:GSAS Futures invites you to join Fordham Bronwen Durocher\, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of English\, and Judith Sheridan\, Ph.D.\, Associate Director for Evaluation and Accreditation at the New York State Association of Independent Schools\, for a conversation on teaching at an independent school. Incorporating a large body of private and parochial schools\, independent schools are often autonomous institutions that value creative and rigorous approaches to classroom instruction. Independent schools court individuals with advanced degrees\, including master’s and Ph.D.’s\, with an interest in applying their expertise to classroom teaching. State certification is not always a requirement for independent school teaching\, and schools that do require certification typically offer guidance and support for teachers to become certified. \nMs. Durocher\, who teaches at Riverdale Country School\, will describe her experience transitioning from graduate school into an independent school classroom\, along with her day-to-day experience teaching. Dr. Sheridan will also discuss her journey from university to secondary school teaching at an independent school. Having worked as the director of an independent school in Manhattan\, Dr. Sheridan hired a number of graduate students and will describe the traits that accompany ideal independent school candidates. \nCoffee and light refreshments will be served. SUMMARY:A Different Take on Israel/Palestine: Shared Histories\, Divergent Pathways | Part II (1949-1979): In Dialogue with Hussein Ibish and David N. Myers
DESCRIPTION:During 2017-2018\, a year abundant with anniversaries related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict\, Fordham University will host a three-part lecture series with Hussein Ibish and David N. Myers offering “A Different Take on Israel/Palestine: Shared Histories\, Divergent Pathways.” \nPart I (September 14\, 2017) will focus on 1882 to 1948. \nPart II (January 25\, 2018) will focus on 1949 to 1979. \nPart II (March 20\, 2018) will focus on 1979 to the present. \nHussein Ibish\, Ph.D.\, is a senior resident scholar at the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington\, D.C.\, a weekly columnist for the National (UAE) and NOW\, and a monthly contributing opinion writer for the The New York Times. Ibish has made thousands of radio and television appearances and was the Washington\, D.C.\, correspondent for The Daily Star (Beirut). Ibish also served as a senior fellow at the American Task Force on Palestine (ATFP)\, and executive director of the Hala Salaam Maksoud Foundation for Arab-American Leadership from 2004 to 2009. From 1998 to 2004\, he was the communications director for the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee. \nDavid N. Myers\, Ph.D.\, is a professor of history and the Sady and Ludwig Kahn Chair in Jewish History at UCLA. He is also currently the CEO of the Center for Jewish History in New York. Myers is the author of Re-Inventing the Jewish Past: European Jewish Intellectuals and the Zionist Return to History (Oxford\, 1995)\, Resisting History: Historicism and its Discontents in German-Jewish Thought (Princeton\, 2003)\, and Between Jew and Arab: The Lost Voice of Simon Rawidowicz (Brandeis University Press\, 2008). He has also edited six books\, including The Jewish Past Revisited; Enlightenment and Diaspora: The Armenian and Jewish Cases\, and Acculturation and its Discontents. \nThis event is co-sponsored by Fordham’s Jewish Studies program\, Middle Eastern Studies program\, Peace and Justice Studies program\, and Department of History.

We take the term “cripping” from within disability studies and activist communities to signal our intention to shift the conversation and to recognize the knowledges and agency of disabled people themselves. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an informal introduction to using and contributing to Wikidata\, the “central storage for the structured data” of Wikipedia and related projects. No prior experience necessary! \nWikimedia NYC members will give a brief introduction to Wikidata\, current Wikidata projects and initiatives\, and how you can contribute to Wikidata. Fordham Library staff will give a quick demonstration of tools for querying Wikidata. \nWe will also look at ways to identify gaps in Wikipedia and improve coverage\, specifically in the areas of Computer Science\, and will do a brief\, live edit of an existing Wikipedia article on a computer scientist to help novice editors get started. A fun and easy way to celebrate Computer Science Education Week!
