SUMMARY:Physics & Engineering Physics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Guest speaker John Murray\, FCRH ’16 and affiliate of the Harris Corporation\, will present “The Global Positioning System: History\, Technology\, and Applications.” In addition\, Luigi Greco\, Ph.D.\, FCRH ’87 and an affiliate of the same company\, will present “Overview of the Multipaction Phenomenon.” \nMurray’s presentation will focus on GPS technology. Behind your favorite maps app is one of the most ambitious—and most successful—feats of engineering ever undertaken by humanity. Designed in the 1970s\, GPS provides precise positioning and timing information to users all over the globe. The service has become taken for granted as a near utility in an ever-connected world\, but the average user is often unaware of the underlying technology and physical phenomena behind global navigation satellite systems. A brief history of GPS will precede an overview of the system at large and the remarkably simple principles that make it possible. \nGreco’s presentation will focus on multipaction. Multipaction is an electron resonance phenomenon encountered in many high-power radio frequency systems that operate in a vacuum environment. Sustained multipaction events in these systems can lead to degraded performance\, significant physical damage to hardware\, and in some cases mission failure. Topics covered include a description of multipaction\, historical background\, simulation/analysis/test methods\, and mitigation guidelines.

SUMMARY:IPED Lecture: The Eurozone\, 20 Years Later
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Federico Righini\, director of portfolio management at Global Capital Group\, a wealth management firm that provides sophisticated investment solutions to individuals\, families\, and institutions around the globe. \nWhat are the effects of the establishment of the single currency area\, the Eurozone? There is evidence of an economic divergence being experienced by Euro area members throughout the latest phase of the European integration process. We’ll analyze the root causes of such divergence and explore some of the structural inefficiencies of the current framework.

SUMMARY:Fordham - NYPL Lecture Series: Nina Valbousquet
DESCRIPTION:“Un-American” and “Un-Christian?” Global Antisemitism and Jewish-Catholic Relations in the United States\, 1936–1945. \nThis lecture examines the impact of antisemitism on Jewish-Catholic relations in the United States from 1936 to the Holocaust. It is especially timely today to further investigate the historical shapes of antisemitism in the U.S. and to consider both its religious and secular components. The second half of the 1930s bore witness to an unprecedented “tide of Catholic antisemitism” in America (Father Gregory Feige). In response\, American Jewish defense organizations approached the Vatican and American Catholic leaders to convince them that antisemitism was “un-American” as well as “un-Christian.” The lecture reassesses the weight of home-grown antisemitism (Father Charles Coughlin\, the Christian Front\, and the Tablet of the Brooklyn diocese\, for instance) as well as the impact of global issues such as the Spanish Civil War and the refugees’ crisis on the eve of WWII. \nIn this presentation\, Valbousquet follows cases of Jewish-Catholic collaboration against antisemitism and the initiatives of the American Jewish Committee\, the National Conference of Christians and Jews\, and the Committee of Catholics to Fight Antisemitism. I dedicate specific attention to Jewish-Catholic encounters that took place in New York and especially to the key role of New York universities (Fordham University\, Hunter College\, Jewish Theological Seminary\, among others). As a result\, the lecture discusses the significance of these interactions: to what extent did they go beyond mere religious self-interests and address broader issues of human rights\, racism\, and pluralism? \nAll Fordham events in Jewish studies are free and open to public.

SUMMARY:Pregnancy\, Labor\, and Birthing in the Afterlife of Slavery
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk with Dána-Ain Davis\, director of the Center for the Study of Women and Society at the Graduate Center\, CUNY. \nBlack women have higher rates of premature birth than other women in America. This cannot be simply explained by economic factors\, with poorer women lacking resources or access to care. Even professional\, middle-class black women are at a much higher risk of premature birth than low-income white women in the United States. Davis looks into this phenomenon\, revealing that ideas about reproduction and race today have been influenced by the legacy of ideas that developed during the era of slavery. \nThis event is sponsored by the Department of Sociology & Anthropology; the Department of Women\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies; and the Ames Fund. \nPlease contact Daisy Deomampo with any questions at ddeomampo@fordham.edu.

Among the numerous awards and accolades Lidia has earned are seven James Beard Awards (Outstanding Chef\, Television Food Show\, Best Chefs in America\, Who’s Who of Food & Beverage in America\, Specials 2016\, 2017\, and 2018)\, and two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Culinary Host (2013 and 2018). \nAbout Stephen Katsouros\, S.J. \nA member of the United States Northeast Province of the Society of Jesus\, Steve Katsouros\, S.J.\, is the founding dean and executive director of Arrupe College at Loyola University Chicago. Arrupe is a two-year college at Loyola’s Water Tower Campus that continues the Jesuit tradition of offering a rigorous liberal arts education to a diverse population\, many of whom are the first in their family to pursue higher education. Arrupe College has graduated two classes since opening in 2015. Prior to arriving in Chicago\, Father Katsouros served as the director of the Institute for Catholic Educational Leadership and associate dean of the School of Education at the University of San Francisco. From 2002 until 2011\, Father Katsouros was president of Loyola\, a coed Jesuit high school in New York City. SUMMARY:Respectability\, Race\, and Making Gender Sacred in U.S. Evangelicalism
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk with Sophie Bjork-James\, Assistant Professor of the Practice in Anthropology at Vanderbilt University. \nWhy did a predominantly white evangelical movement form around defending the normative family in the 1970s? Why have family values—as a shorthand for talking about reproductive politics\, sexuality\, and gender—remained at the center of evangelical politics? This talk explores these questions based on ethnographic research in Colorado Springs. \nFor further information\, contact Professor Daisy Deomampo at ddeomampo@fordham.edu.
