DESCRIPTION:The Fordham Foundry is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its founding with a full year of programming and fundraising. The Foundry is Fordham’s Hub for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and has helped more than 4\,500 students and alumni from all of Fordham’s schools including Fordham Law\, the Graduate School of Social Services\, Fordham College\, and the Gabelli School of Business. \nTo kick off the 2022 – 2023 celebrations\, the Foundry is hosting an event featuring keynote speaker John J. Kilcullen\, creator of the For Dummies series and an FCRH grad. There will also be a “fireside chat” with two Fordham alumni founders (Brandon Kim\, co-founder of Brevite\, and Lauren Sweeney\, co-founder of Deliver Zero) and some brief remarks by Fordham and New York City community leaders. There will be an open bar and ample opportunities for networking with other entrepreneurial-minded Fordham alumni and students\, including members of the Fordham Angel Fund—Fordham’s venture capital fund for student and alumni-led businesses. \nEarly bird tickets are $15 through October 15; $20 thereafter and at the door. \nBusiness casual attire.

SUMMARY:Continuing Education: Helping Individuals with an Intellectual or Developmental Disability Cope with Serious Illness
DESCRIPTION:There is a hidden population of people who require inclusive\, affirmative care throughout the United States. Historically\, they have been underserved\, ignored\, and forgotten. They live at home\, in group settings\, in nursing homes\, and on the street. In 2020\, there were 36.5 million people living at home in the U.S. with intellectual disability (ID) and developmental delay (DD). Their providers require a specialized lens to offer holistic individualized\, biopsychosocial-spiritual care. The special protections established to prevent medical disenfranchisement\, neglect\, and abuse can seem esoteric. Clinicians may view those necessary protections as barriers to care. \nThis class offers guidance to provide inclusive\, patient- and family-centered care for people and families living with ID/DD. Clinicians will understand the nuances of working with people and their families living with ID/DD throughout the life course\, such as assessing capacity in the context of ID/DD. Special attention will be paid to the palliative management of serious illness and end-of-life care to navigate advance directives\, goals of care discussions\, and life-sustaining treatment in the context of complex capacity and competency conversations. \nUsing lecture\, breakout groups\, and discussion\, we will examine case studies of persons with ID/DD who develop a life-limiting illness\, when the person living with ID/DD is in a caregiver role\, and best practices for additional support for people with ID/DD through bereavement. \nContinuing Education Hours Offered: 2

DESCRIPTION:Family caregivers play a significant role in caring for people with chronic and serious illnesses. In the context of palliative and end-of-life care\, caregivers play a vital role in providing assistance with daily living\, critical medical decision-making\, and adherence to treatment recommendations. Social workers are uniquely qualified to work with family caregivers from the person-in-situation perspective and to take the lead in the family meeting. This class will highlight the theoretical framework for the family meeting in health care\, including palliative care\, best practices in caregiver assessment\, and treatment\, using real-life case scenarios to illustrate complex clinical issues and social work best practices. The training will focus on reinforcement of theory\, practice skills\, reflective exercises\, and strategies for increasing professional visibility within the family meeting. DESCRIPTION:Interdisciplinary healthcare teams\, including palliative care teams\, are high-functioning models of effective inter/intradisciplinary work. Our process of collaborative information sharing can contribute to effective and emotionally sustainable care for patients and families. Social workers\, nurse practitioners\, physicians\, and other integral interdisciplinary team members are united in their common goal of quality patient care\, but the lens through which we view medical complexities may be radically different. \nWhile this difference and overlap contribute to the richness of interdisciplinary care and often results in better care for patients and families\, we must also nurture ourselves and these relationships to prevent role fatigue\, unintentional conflict\, and burnout. Healthy teams must be created and maintained. With the difficult realities we face in everyday work\, we must pay attention to the health of our colleagues\, and ourselves\, in order to best support team function. \nWhile healthcare team members have many shared attributes and skillsets\, social workers are trained specifically in nonverbal communication\, the impact and use of language\, relational dynamics\, family system theory\, and group therapy facilitation. DESCRIPTION:Healthcare providers have notable discomfort engaging individuals around issues of the abuse\, mistreatment\, and exploitation of older adults. Although there are requirements for reporting elder abuse\, healthcare provider discomfort and lack of experience contribute to it being the least reported type of domestic violence. Data suggest that one in 10 older adults in the United States is mistreated or neglected\, so social workers can expect to encounter these situations in many settings\, including family services\, healthcare settings\, and services for seniors. \nThe United States has laws at the state and national levels to protect older adults. As mandated reporters in most states\, social workers are integral to identifying\, assisting\, and reporting instances of elder abuse. This class will describe elder abuse\, signs\, and risk factors and cover local\, state\, and national policy and legislation for older adults. DESCRIPTION:Chronic pain and pain associated with serious or life-limiting illness impacts the lives of millions of people who engage with social workers across settings and diagnoses. Pain is a multidimensional construct affected by biological\, psychological\, social\, spiritual\, and cultural factors. Health social workers have an enormous opportunity to influence the historical and current barriers to managing pain\, including the racial and gender disparities that continue to impact care and access. Managing pain in collaboration with interprofessional colleagues requires an understanding of ethical challenges and the current political and public policy landscape surrounding pain management and opioid use. This landscape makes access more complex\, demanding expert assessment and treatment plans to maximize effectiveness\, with attention to structures to enhance safe prescribing. In addition to defining pain and associated suffering\, its scope\, and impacts\, participants will gain an awareness of the ethical\, clinical\, and policy aspects that invite social work advocacy and intervention\, which are buttressed by the foundational principles of environmental context and starting where the patient is. \nContinuing Education Hours Offered: 2

SUMMARY:Continuing Education: Navigating Microaggressions Through the Lens of Clinicians of Color
DESCRIPTION:While social workers work to raise our collective voices of protest against blatant forms of racism in society\, we may be less sensitive to “the subtle\, cumulative mini-assault [that]is the substance of today’s racism” present in our profession. Microaggressions are often elusive and nuanced\, verbal and nonverbal acts that reflect the superiority\, hostility\, and discrimination of the dominant culture against a minority. They prove to be more insidious than overt forms of racism because they are easier to go unnamed and therefore\, invalidated. \nEspecially in the current political environment\, it is imperative that social workers increase our attunement and consciousness of microaggressions\, not only in society at large but also in our profession. This class will review ways in which racial microaggressions are experienced by and impact clinicians of color in a variety of settings. It seeks to illuminate a framework to understand clinicians’ disenfranchised experiences\, particularly in clinical environments that are susceptible to act as depositories of transference and countertransference. From the perspective of the professional experience of clinicians of color and a review of literature\, we will explore ways to forge critical awareness of the subject. The goals of the presentation are for participants to critically reflect on their practice\, become more informed and thereby support\, and ultimately create alliances with their peer clinicians of color. \nContinuing Education Hours Offered: 1.5

SUMMARY:Continuing Education: Supporting Patients and Families Through the Dying Process
DESCRIPTION:Familiarizing ourselves with how to help people who are dying and those around them increases in importance as our population ages and the country experiences health threats. Supporting our clients facing their own or others’ dying process requires us to have general knowledge about that process; to understand our own reactions to death; and to know how\, when\, and whether to help. Our ability to empower and comfort our clients around the deaths they are experiencing is strengthened by our knowledge and our own confidence in addressing these topics. \nThis class will review the symptoms of pre-active and active dying and how to help the family at the bedside manage these. We’ll consider what people who are dying want and fear\, and how these concerns may change over the course of their dying. We’ll explore how decision-making and communication affect the patient’s death experience\, including considering how hope and a poor prognosis interact. Participants will be invited to share their personal and professional introductions to death. We will also consider our strengths and weaknesses as advocates. Finally\, we will practice some easy exercises to help ourselves remain grounded despite the whirlwind of emotions around us. \nContinuing Education Hours Offered: 4

DESCRIPTION:At the heart of communication in health care settings and beyond are decisions related to language and word choice. As palliative care has developed and been integrated across settings and diagnoses\, phrases and concepts\, such as “quality of life\,” “goals of care” and “suffering\,” weave across discussions\, often without consciousness of the cultural\, social\, and historical contexts of the patient and family we are serving. No matter the setting\, words and phrases significantly impact patient and family experiences\, decisional outcomes\, bereavement\, and legacy. Well-intentioned yet misplaced word choice can negatively impact patient interpretation of information and create distance when the goal is to enhance connection.
