SUMMARY:Continuing Education: Navigating Microaggressions Through the Lens of Clinicians of Color
DESCRIPTION:While social workers work to raise our collective voices of protest against blatant forms of racism in society\, we may be less sensitive to “the subtle\, cumulative mini-assault [that]is the substance of today’s racism” present in our profession. Microaggressions are often elusive and nuanced\, verbal and nonverbal acts that reflect the superiority\, hostility\, and discrimination of the dominant culture against a minority. They prove to be more insidious than overt forms of racism because they are easier to go unnamed and therefore\, invalidated. \nEspecially in the current political environment\, it is imperative that social workers increase our attunement and consciousness of microaggressions\, not only in society at large but also in our profession. This class will review ways in which racial microaggressions are experienced by and impact clinicians of color in a variety of settings. It seeks to illuminate a framework to understand clinicians’ disenfranchised experiences\, particularly in clinical environments that are susceptible to act as depositories of transference and countertransference. From the perspective of the professional experience of clinicians of color and a review of literature\, we will explore ways to forge critical awareness of the subject. The goals of the presentation are for participants to critically reflect on their practice\, become more informed and thereby support\, and ultimately create alliances with their peer clinicians of color. \nContinuing Education Hours Offered: 1.5

SUMMARY:Continuing Education: Supporting Patients and Families Through the Dying Process
DESCRIPTION:Familiarizing ourselves with how to help people who are dying and those around them increases in importance as our population ages and the country experiences health threats. Supporting our clients facing their own or others’ dying process requires us to have general knowledge about that process; to understand our own reactions to death; and to know how\, when\, and whether to help. Our ability to empower and comfort our clients around the deaths they are experiencing is strengthened by our knowledge and our own confidence in addressing these topics. \nThis class will review the symptoms of pre-active and active dying and how to help the family at the bedside manage these. We’ll consider what people who are dying want and fear\, and how these concerns may change over the course of their dying. We’ll explore how decision-making and communication affect the patient’s death experience\, including considering how hope and a poor prognosis interact. Participants will be invited to share their personal and professional introductions to death. We will also consider our strengths and weaknesses as advocates. Finally\, we will practice some easy exercises to help ourselves remain grounded despite the whirlwind of emotions around us. \nContinuing Education Hours Offered: 4

DESCRIPTION:At the heart of communication in health care settings and beyond are decisions related to language and word choice. As palliative care has developed and been integrated across settings and diagnoses\, phrases and concepts\, such as “quality of life\,” “goals of care” and “suffering\,” weave across discussions\, often without consciousness of the cultural\, social\, and historical contexts of the patient and family we are serving. No matter the setting\, words and phrases significantly impact patient and family experiences\, decisional outcomes\, bereavement\, and legacy. Well-intentioned yet misplaced word choice can negatively impact patient interpretation of information and create distance when the goal is to enhance connection. Social workers\, as experts and leaders in communication\, can model and educate as they attend to their own language in speaking and documentation\, and invite colleagues to join them in mitigating the unintended consequences of ineffective word choice. \nContinuing Education Hours Offered: 3

SUMMARY:GSS Continuing Education: Health Care Decision-Making: What Every Social Worker Needs to Know
DESCRIPTION:Despite the Patient Self-Determination Act of 1990\, advance care planning remains poorly understood and often completed at the very end of life. Consequently\, patients are left with making difficult health care decisions in highly stressful situations and poor health. Similarly\, designated health care decision-makers often need to make these decisions with little or no knowledge of the patient’s wishes. This class will provide an overview of advance care planning as an essential component of quality patient care. Advance care planning documents\, such as advance directives and POLST orders\, will be discussed. Strategies on how to facilitate quality advance care planning conversations will be presented\, and the role of the social worker in promoting advance care planning will be elaborated upon. \nCompletion of this class will result in the receipt of two (2) continuing education hours.

SUMMARY:GSS Continuing Education: Choice in Dying: Current Legal\, Policy\, and Ethical Issues
DESCRIPTION:Many patients\, particularly at the end of life\, do not receive quality care. Palliative and hospice care are not often provided in a timely manner\, if at all. Additionally\, the health care wishes of patients are often not honored\, thus dying patients may receive interventions they never wanted. Patients who experience intolerable suffering may not know of options that could reduce their suffering and allow them to die with dignity\, in accordance with their values and wishes. In order to make informed decisions about end-of-life care\, patients must be given information about the expected benefits and burdens of proposed interventions—as well as the consequences of changing the focus of care to comfort. Social workers can play an important role as catalysts for better quality care for patients at the end of life to ensure that their health care wishes are respected. \nCompletion of this class will result in the receipt of four (4) continuing education hours.

SUMMARY:Careers in Social Work: A Focus on Macro Practice\, with Nancy Wackstein
DESCRIPTION:Nancy Wackstein was the director of community engagement and partnerships at the Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service (GSS) from February 2016 to July 2021\, following a long career in the New York City nonprofit sector. Along with her duties as a director\, she also acted as the adviser for the GSS Student Congress and supervised macro students placed in the NYC mayor’s office. \nFrom 2002 to 2015\, Wackstein served as the executive director of United Neighborhood Houses of New York (UNH)\, the federation of New York City’s 38 settlement houses and community centers. Prior to UNH\, she was the executive director of Lenox Hill Neighborhood House\, a Manhattan settlement house\, for 11 years. \nFrom 1990to 1991\, Wackstein acted as director of homelessness and SRO housing under Mayor David N. Dinkins\, and she was senior policy advisor for human services in the Manhattan Borough President’s Office from 1986 to1989. Over the course of her career\, Wackstein has also served on many nonprofit boards and NYC government task forces and commissions. \nShe received a bachelor’s degree from Binghamton University\, SUNY\, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa\, and a master’s degree from the Columbia University School of Social Work (CUSSW). In 2009\, Wackstein was inducted into the CUSSW Hall of Fame. In 2013\, she was awarded an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Binghamton University.

SUMMARY:GSS Continuing Education: Moral Distress: What It Is and How to Respond
DESCRIPTION:The concept of moral distress refers to a clinical situation in which the patient is perceived to be “suffering” and the clinician knows what they feel to be the best course of action\, but that course conflicts with what is best for the organization\, other providers\, other patients\, the family\, or society as a whole. Moral distress can occur when the professional feels a sense of heightened moral responsibility and also a perception of powerlessness. \nWhile moral distress was first recognized among nurses\, we now know that moral distress affects physicians\, pharmacists\, social workers\, chaplains\, psychologists\, and other health care providers. This class covers the experience of moral distress\, its impact on clinicians of multiple disciplines\, and the specific impact of moral distress among palliative care teams. Strategies for recognizing and dealing with the experience of moral distress on individuals\, teams\, and within health systems will be considered. \nCompletion of this class will result in the receipt of three (3) continuing education hours.

DESCRIPTION:Bob O’Shea was the quintessential Fordham student. A scrappy kid from New Jersey\, his grandmother worked as a maid at the Waldorf Astoria in midtown Manhattan\, his father was a New York City cop\, and he himself was accepted to Fordham on a track and field scholarship. O’Shea’s success on Wall Street is the epitome of the American dream. Michael Gatto\, an adjunct professor at Fordham\, will be interviewing O’Shea about his meteoric rise on Wall Street. O’Shea was offered partnership at Goldman Sachs at age 29\, making him the second-youngest partner in the firm’s history. Then\, as a second act\, O’Shea co-founded Silver Point Capital\, a credit and special situations hedge fund\, in 2002. O’Shea was co-CEO at the firm from 2002 until 2011 at which time he became chairman. Today\, Silver Point manages more than $15 billion of assets under management across hedge fund\, private equity\, and direct lending strategies. Headquartered in Greenwich\, Connecticut\, the firm has approximately 180 employees\, including more than 60 investment professionals. \nPrior to founding Silver Point\, O’Shea worked at Goldman Sachs for 10 years. He joined Goldman in 1990 to found and build the firm’s global bank loan business. During his tenure at Goldman Sachs\, in addition to building the global bank loan business\, he also became the global head of the high yield business unit\, leading the firm’s high-yield bond and bank loan underwriting\, trading\, sales\, capital markets and research\, and the collateralized debt obligation (CDO) business. O’Shea was a member of Goldman’s risk committee\, which was responsible for managing the firm’s global risk exposure. He was also on the board of Goldman Sachs international bank and senior traders committee. He was elected general partner in 1994. Prior to working at Goldman Sachs\, he worked at Bear Stearns in the high yield department and Security Pacific Bank in the Merchant Banking Group. O’Shea graduated from Fordham University with a B.S. in finance. \nGatto was one of the first employees at Silver Point Capital\, a credit-focused hedge fund. After joining the firm in April 2002\, he became the first non-founding partner in January 2003. He has helped grow the business from $120 million of assets under management in 2002 to approximately $15 billion currently. Today\, he is the head of the firm’s private side businesses. Prior to joining Silver Point\, Gatto worked at Goldman Sachs as a senior member within the special situations investing business. \nGatto has served on numerous boards\, which have included specialty retailer Party City and New Cotai Holdings (a Macau gaming company)\, and he was chairman of the board of Quinn Industries\, an Irish Industrial company. Outside of Silver Point\, Gatto is an adjunct professor at Columbia Business School and Fordham University’s Gabelli School of Business\, where he teaches courses on credit analysis\, and distressed value and special situation investing. DESCRIPTION:Death anxiety is an evolutionary concept relating to the very core of what it means to be human. While death anxiety is often implicit and below conscious awareness\, some theorists and researchers propose it actually underlies much of our motivation in life. A better understanding of the death anxiety implicit within us helps us better tolerate and hold space for the often-unspoken death anxiety of our patients and clients. This workshop seeks to help participants better understand what death anxiety is\, how it manifests\, and how it feels within themselves. The workshop is highly experiential and evocative and requires focused\, active participation and reflection.
