She specializes in the construction and management of high-yield and core-plus bond portfolios. Prior to joining WCB\, she served as senior vice president and a high-yield portfolio manager for institutional separate accounts and mutual funds for The Capital Group Companies/American Funds in Los Angeles. Along with her high-yield responsibilities\, Carr also managed investment-grade corporate and long-duration credit portfolios. She began her career as an investment analyst for the fixed income group at Capital in 1999. Carr has been an adjunct professor of finance at Columbia Business School\, where she teaches courses on the credit markets and cash flow modeling\, since 2012. She has an M.B.A. from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University and received her B.A. from Harvard\, where she graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1994. \nBarbara Ann Bernard is the founder and chief investment officer of Wincrest Capital Ltd. She began her career with Sir John Templeton in the Bahamas before moving to Goldman Sachs and Deutsche Bank in London\, followed by Holowesko Partners in the Bahamas. She then launched Wincrest. Bertrand was named one of the “Top 50 Women in Hedge Funds” by Ernst & Young and the Hedge Fund Journal\, was inducted as a Young Global Leader at the World Economic Forum\, and is a co-founder of Variant Perspectives: Women in Investing Conference. She regularly contributes to CNBC’s Fast Money program. Bertrand chairs United World Colleges Bahamian National Committee and is on the board of the Canadian Lyford Cay Foundation. She is a graduate of the London School of Economics\, Li Po Chun United World Colleges of Hong Kong\, and Lakefield College School in Canada. \nMarilyn Freeman is currently the chief strategy officer for Attucks Asset Management LLC\, a firm based in Chicago and founded in 2001. The firm specializes in identifying\, researching\, and building teams of diverse investment talent for its institutional clients\, focused on long-only strategies. Freeman was previously a founding partner of Capital Prospects LLC\, also a manager-of-emerging-managers firm\, which merged with Attucks in January 2020. Prior to the establishment of Capital Prospects as a multiple-manager LLC in 2002\, Freeman spent a 24-plus year career at Northern Trust Global Advisors Inc. and its predecessor firms\, RCB International Inc. and Rogers\, Casey & Barksdale Inc. She has a B.A. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook\, and an M.B.A. from the University of Connecticut. She is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma\, the international business honor society. She is also a longstanding member of the Greenwich Roundtable\, a nonprofit research and educational organization in the alternatives space. \nAs chief diversity officer\, Wendy Garcia is responsible for increasing contracting opportunities for women- and minority-owned business enterprises (MWBEs) and managing the Comptroller Office’s internal supplier diversity initiative\, as well as other diversity-related projects across all bureaus of the agency. Garcia also leads the Comptroller’s Advisory Council on Economic Growth Through Diversity and Inclusion\, a group comprised of national\, local\, corporate\, and government experts seeking to increase supplier diversity in the public and private sectors. She earned a master’s degree in urban policy and management from New School with a concentration in economic development\, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Delaware. \nJasmine N. Richards joined Cambridge Associates in 2018 as head of diverse manager research to lead the firm’s ongoing initiative to identify and research institutional-quality investment managers in all public and private asset classes that have diverse owners or leaders\, including women and people of color. A highly experienced investment research executive\, Richards has more than 15 years of both buy- and sell-side experience. Prior to joining Cambridge Associates\, she worked at FIS Group as an international equity manager and research analyst responsible for identifying and managing investment strategies\, with an emphasis on diverse-owned asset managers. Richards holds an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business\, where she concentrated in finance\, accounting\, and strategic management. While there\, Richards also studied emerging markets at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg\, South Africa. She attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the New York Institute of Technology for her undergraduate education. She is a member of the CFA Institute and the CFA Society of Boston.

SUMMARY:IPED Spring 2021 Lecture Series: International Rescue Committee
DESCRIPTION:What is the International Rescue Committee (IRC)? What do they do as a global humanitarian organization? And what is its impact on today’s most pressing issues? Please join the international political economy and development (IPED) community as we listen to two representatives from the IRC. They will talk about working in the IRC and its research and innovation team\, as well as potential summer internship opportunities. \nAlyssa Campbell works as an evidence to action manager in the Airbel Impact Lab\, a research and innovation department at the IRC. Her work involves articulating copious amounts of evidence amongst the IRC’s research areas. She holds a B.A. in law\, politics\, and history from Sciences Po Paris and an M.S. in urban planning from the London School of Economics. \nAnjini Mishra is an advisor with the evidence to action team at the Airbel Impact Lab. She is tasked with the coordination and development of evidence synthesis products as decision-making inputs. She is also tasked with the maintenance of evidence resources and repositories. She holds an M.S. from the University of Glasgow and an M.S.W. from Jamia Milia Islamia University.

Explore how we’re forging competitive differentiation and inspiring positive\, global change through business leadership. \nAbout the Speakers\nKatherine Milligan is a fellow at Fordham University’s Gabelli School of Business\, head of gender diversity at Bamboo Capital\, and is a strategic advisor\, coach\, board member\, and mentor to individuals and institutions working to achieve greater social impact. In her role as a Gabelli fellow\, she teaches the Global Immersion course on Social Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship. She also teaches master’s courses on social entrepreneurship at the Graduate Institute of International Affairs and in the M.B.A. program at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. \nFrom 2012 to 2018\, she was the executive director of the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship\, the sister organization of the World Economic Forum\, which supports the largest community of late-stage social entrepreneurs in the world. Milligan is the author of more than 17 publications\, articles\, and blogs published by the International Institute of Economics\, Stanford Social Innovation Review\, MIT’s Innovations journal\, World Economic Forum Agenda\, and the Harvard Business School. She received her B.A. from Dartmouth College\, and her master’s in public policy from Harvard University\, where she was the recipient of the Pforzheimer Scholarship for Excellence in Nonprofit Management. \nPatrick Struebi is a fellow at Fordham University’s Gabelli School of Business. He is a social entrepreneur\, thought leader\, and founder and CEO of the Fairtrasa Group\, a pioneering social enterprise that lifts marginalized\, small-scale farmers out of poverty. Fairtrasa is one of the largest organic and fairtrade exporters from Latin America\, with a vertically integrated business structure impacting more than 50\,000 direct beneficiaries. He is also the co-founder of Blooom\, a cutting-edge agricultural technology platform with the goal of lifting 1 million farmers out of poverty by 2023. \nFor his work with Fairtrasa\, Struebi was selected as an Ashoka fellow\, an Endeavor high-impact entrepreneur\, and a Yale World Fellow. Furthermore\, he has been named Social Entrepreneur of the Year four times—by the Schwab Foundation (2014)\, the ABC Foundation (2012)\, Univision (2012)\, and Visionaris (2009). In his role as Gabelli fellow\, he teaches Social Innovation. In 2014\, the World Economic Forum named Struebi a New Champion\, and he is also a member of the Clinton Global Initiative. He writes a column at HuffPost and gives talks around the world on social innovation and related issues.

On Monday\, March 8\, at 5 p.m.\, Nora Moran\, L.M.S.W.\, director of policy and advocacy at United Neighborhood Houses (UNH)\, will present on advocacy skills for social workers. \nJoin us for a night of discussion and learning. This event will be a space for GSS students to continue their pursuit of how to give a voice to the voiceless. \nAbout the Speaker: Nora Moran returned to UNH in May 2019 to lead UNH’s policy and advocacy team. In her role as director of policy and advocacy\, Moran supervises UNH’s policy team\, analyzes government policies and budgets\, mobilizes support for funding and policies\, and lobbies at both the state and city levels to support critical services that include child care and early childhood education\, after-school and youth development programs\, ESOL and legal services for immigrants\, mental health services\, and services to support older adults. Prior to rejoining UNH\, Moran served as a policy director at Safe Horizon\, the nation’s leading victim assistance organization\, and was a senior policy analyst for aging and behavioral health at UNH. She has a Master of Social Work degree from the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College and a bachelor’s degree from Fordham University.

SUMMARY:Continuing Education: Getting Past Indecision - Skills to Support Patients' Decision Making
DESCRIPTION:This class focuses on communication skills supporting patients’ decision-making. Instructor Jennifer Halpern\, Ph.D.\, LCSW\, APHSW-C\, will explore how their decision-making may be hindered in the real-life\, stressful settings with insufficient information that often characterize palliative care situations. We will also consider how culture may influence patients’ participation in healthcare decisions. Taking these influences into account will improve our navigation of goals-of-care conversations and family meetings. Knowledgeable application of communication skills may also help patients and physicians avoid conflict and misunderstandings. \nCompletion of this class will result in the receipt of 2.5 continuing education hours. \nAbout the Instructor\nJennifer Halpern\, Ph.D.\, LMSW\, APHSW-C\, is a senior medical and certified palliative social worker based at the Oncology Support Program (OSP) of the Westchester Medical Center Network/Health Alliance of the Hudson Valley. Halpern supports both inpatients and outpatients. She is the psychosocial coordinator for the hospital’s Cancer Committee and is the chair of the Ethics Committee. Recently\, Halpern has coordinated and directed the study guide for the APHSW certification exam as the Social Work Hospice & Palliative Care Network’s (SWHPN) educational consultant. Halpern received her doctorate in social psychology/organizational behavior from University of California\, Berkeley. As an assistant professor at Cornell University\, she taught both undergraduates and professionals. \nHalpern’s publications focus on communication\, negotiation\, and decision-making. She authored two chapters in—and co-edited—Debating Rationality: Nonrational Aspects of Organizational Decision Making (Frank W. Pierce Memorial Lectureship and Conference Series\, ILR Press). She has volunteered\, been a social work intern for\, and provided business consulting services for Hospicare of Tompkins County. A move to the Hudson Valley led to her current position with the OSP\, a community-oriented program that just celebrated its 25th anniversary.

During the workshop\, Jeff Levy\, FCLC ’71\, will walk through important foundations\, from mindset preparedness before you start your own business to exploring tactical elements\, such as financing to business planning. \nLevy is a small-business advocate with an emphasis on franchising. His experience includes participation in new technology companies\, buyout leverage and management\, raising investment capital\, and providing coaching to hundreds of startup ventures. He has coached more than 900 individuals\, including more than 320 who have become franchisees\, and he co-authored the book Making the Jump into Small Business Ownership.
