DESCRIPTION:The Fordham Alumni Chapter of San Diego invited Fordham alumni and friends in the San Diego area to this exciting event featuring Imam Taha Hassane\, director of the Islamic Center of San Diego\, and Sister Kathy Warren\, O.S.F.\, a Franciscan from the Diocese of San Diego. \nImam Taha Hassane is the director of the Islamic Center of San Diego\, where he has served as Imam since 2004. As a faith leader\, he has joined forces with Catholic\, Jewish\, and Protestant leaders and nonreligious organizations to address issues such as immigration\, homelessness\, racial injustice\, and worker wages. Last June\, Imam Taha was named Community Hero”by KPBS and the National Conflict Resolution’s Center for his civility in public discourse. \nSister Kathy Warren is a member of Franciscan Sisters of Rochester\, Minnesota\, and moved to San Diego a year ago to be the director of the Office for Women Religious in the Diocese of San Diego. Since 2000\, Sister Kathy has been a retreat and conference presenter on themes related to Muslim-Christian interaction from a Franciscan perspective. She is the author of Daring to Cross the Threshold: Francis of Assisi Encounters Sultan Malek al-Kamil. She has also been involved in the production of two films about Francis and the Sultan: one from a Franciscan publishing house\, the other from a Muslim publishing house. She looks forward to sharing the story of Francis and the Sultan as the springboard for the timely conversation regarding Muslim-Christian interaction in our lives and our world. \nAll are welcome to this Jesuit-sponsored\, interfaith\, intergenerational\, free gathering. DESCRIPTION:The Fordham Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis cordially invites you to a special book presentation by Sanjai Bhaghat\, author of Financial Crisis\, Corporate Governance\, and Bank Capital. \nIn the aftermath of the 2008 crisis\, senior policymakers and the media blamed excessive risk-taking by bank executives—undertaken in response to their compensation incentives—for the crisis. The inevitable follow-up to this was to introduce stronger financial regulation\, in the hope that better and more ethical behavior could be induced. Despite the honorable intentions of regulation\, such as the Dodd-Frank Act of 2010\, it is clear that many big banks are still deemed too big to fail. This book argues that by restructuring executive incentive programs to include only restricted stock and restricted stock options with very long vesting periods\, and by financing banks with considerably more equity\, the potential of future financial crises can be minimized.

SUMMARY:Managing Stereotype Threat on the Job Market
DESCRIPTION:Join GSAS Futures in conversation with Rufus E. Jones\, co-founder and president of the James Weldon Johnson Foundation. Jones will discuss a challenge endemic to many new candidates seeking jobs in academic and industry circles alike: stereotype threat. Candidates are often unaware of the capacity for stereotype threat to negatively impact their pursuit of professional success. Stereotype threat involves an individual undermining his or her own performance at a given task because of widespread beliefs that a social group with which he or she identifies—including groups organized by race\, gender\, nation\, or age—do not naturally perform well at that particular task. \nStereotype threat can breed anxiety and create conditions of self-sabotage in which job candidates struggle to perform well on interviews\, to negotiate contracts with new employers\, and to perform new jobs with competence and confidence. Feelings of discomfort may accompany settings where people feel there are few people like them. Nevertheless\, enhanced awareness and understanding of stereotype threat can greatly reduce its effects. \nJones will discuss his own journey as an individual of color who moved from Harvard to Wall Street to roles promoting education and the arts as a teacher\, administrator\, coach\, and fundraiser. Jones will discuss stereotype threat as he draws from his own experience as well as research he is co-facilitating with the James Weldon Johnson Foundation and a lab at New York University. He will discuss challenges that individuals may encounter as they pursue a range of professions and will offer practical coping strategies—including the use of interventions\, language\, and tactics to effectively handle various situations and mitigate the effects of stereotype threat to promote a job candidate’s success. \nLight refreshments will be served.
