SUMMARY:Pathways to Culturally-Adapted Cancer Care: Clinical Work and Program Development with Latinx and Chinese Immigrant Patients
DESCRIPTION:This class will explore the challenges\, barriers\, and opportunities in the delivery of culturally responsive cancer care for patients in the Chinese and Latinx immigrant New York City community. Disparities in cancer diagnosis\, treatment\, and outcomes drawn from the literature will be presented to frame why culturally responsive treatment is crucial to improve the engagement and outcomes of these large and growing groups. Instructors will guide participants through the assessment and intervention process with these populations and discuss their clinical work with immigrant cancer patients. \nGrace R. Downs-Liguori\, LCSW\, will present her experience as the only oncology social worker in a community hospital where a large number of Latinx immigrants receive their care. Mi (Emma) Zhou\, LCSW will present the process of developing culturally tailored cancer-supportive services for Chinese immigrant patients\, barriers encountered during the program-building process\, and the strategies for reaching out to Chinese immigrant cancer patients and recruiting them to the program. Hing Lin (Helen) Sit\, the manager of the VNS Health Chinatown Neighborhood Naturally Occurring Retirement Community\, will present her experience working with older Chinese immigrants through this nonprofit. SUMMARY:Integrating social care into health care delivery: Health-related social needs assessment and intervention
DESCRIPTION:The class will guide social workers in exploring opportunities to integrate social needs screening and interventions into routine medical care delivery in a variety of healthcare settings. Several teaching modalities will be used in the course including didactic exercises\, case studies\, group discussion\, and audiovisual mediums. Social workers will become familiar with several HRSN screening tools that can be thoughtfully analyzed for application into their own clinical settings. With the changing face of healthcare in the electronic age\, innovative opportunities to engage with health informatics and data management will be woven throughout the course material. Completion of this class will result in the receipt of two (2) continuing education hours. \nThe class is a critical learning opportunity to professionalize the social work discipline in complex\, health care structures. The class supports social workers in the assessment\, understanding\, and intervention of the multifaceted social and environmental factors that contribute to patient health outcomes and acute care utilization. These activities are impactful in improving and addressing social needs within patient care and further demonstrate the value of social workers in a variety of clinical healthcare settings.

SUMMARY:Reconstructing Palliative Care Practice: A Beginning
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This course has a registration capacity of 50 participants \nCompletion of this class will result in the receipt of six and one-half (6.5) continuing education hours. \nThe mission and values of social workers practicing in healthcare and palliative care specifically can be overshadowed in hierarchical systems where we are a minority profession. The goal of this workshop is shared learning to begin to reconstruct palliative care practice\, questioning some primary constructs that have infused healthcare practice and policy. By introducing experts beyond palliative care\, we evolve a model that both integrates and interrogates the learnings and experiences of clinicians over the past half-century. Our intention is to highlight the unique “red thread” of skill\, authenticity\, and values that is at the core of social work practice and essential to the care of patients and families as we self-educate toward the goals of restoring trust\, challenging biases\, and mitigating inequities. As we follow this connecting thread through aspects of our work such as ethics\, inequities\, culture\, and spirituality across settings and diagnoses\, we maximize our abilities to identify and reconstruct opportunities for honoring divergent values\, enriching the care of patients and families\, enhancing meaning in the work and impacting legacy. The established curriculum\, insights\, and group discussion are the foundation for reinforcing our social justice mandate\, identifying skills to challenge inequities and honor sources of meaning to both sustain and enrich the self\, the work\, and our profession. This shared time creates an opportunity for social workers to review their participation in promoting practices that may in fact perpetuate a white western model of responding to serious illness.
