SUMMARY:Manhattan Theatre Club Outing: Poor Yella Rednecks
DESCRIPTION:Join AAF (Asian American and Pacific Islander Alumni at Fordham)\, Theatre AAPI\, the Chinese Student Association\, and the Vietnamese Student Association for a theater outing to see Poor Yella Rednecks at the Manhattan Theatre Club. \nQui Nguyen\, the wildly inventive playwright and screenwriter for Marvel and Disney\, known for his use of pop culture\, pop music\, and puppetry\, reunites with his frequent director collaborator\, May Adrales\, for this funny\, sexy\, and brash new play. A young Vietnamese family attempts to put down roots in Arkansas\, a place as different from home as it gets. A mom and dad balance big hopes and low-wage jobs as old flings threaten to pull them apart. It all makes for a bumpy road to the American dream. From the world of Nguyen’s Vietgone\, with its comic book and action movie influences\, comes a play that melds a deeply personal story with the playwright’s trademark killer humor. The New York Times hails the writer’s work as “culturally savvy comedy\,” and this production shows you why. \nThe production is directed by May Adrales\, director of Fordham’s Theatre Program. She is a director\, teacher\, and artistic leader with extensive experience. She helmed the world premiere of the Lortel Award- and Obie Award-Winning production Vietgone at Manhattan Theatre Club. She has been awarded directing fellowships at New York Theater Workshop\, Women's Project\, SoHo Rep\, and the Drama League. \nHappy hour at Whiskey Trader at 77 W. 55th Street will precede the production. Drinks are not included in the ticket price. \nFollowing the show\, join a talkback examining the birth of hip-hop and the last years of the Vietnam War\, both coinciding with the early 1970s. Panelists include Tony Bui\, film director and screenwriter (Three Seasons and Green Dragon)\, and Rohan Zhou-Lee\, writer\, dancer\, and community organizer (Blasian March). The ticket cost includes the show and talkback. \nAn email with additional details will be sent closer to the event.
