SUMMARY:Women Deacons: One Year On
DESCRIPTION:Over a year ago\, members of a Vatican commission charged with studying the possibility of the admission of women to the diaconate submitted their report to Pope Francis. Two commission members spoke at Fordham in January 2019. But the Vatican has yet to issue a definitive response\, and many are finding the question symbolic of the Catholic Church’s treatment of women overall. \nJoin Fordham’s Department of Theology\, Orthodox Christian Studies Center\, and Center on Religion and Culture for a follow-up conversation featuring papal commission member Phyllis Zagano\, TMC ’69\, Catholic feminist theologian Meghan J. Clark\, FCRH ‘03\, and theology professor and co-director of Fordham’s Orthodox Christian Studies Center\, George Demacopoulos. The panel will share the latest developments in the conversations about women deacons in the Catholic Church and beyond.

SUMMARY:Ignatian Week Day of Service & Solidarity: Care of Our Common Home
DESCRIPTION:The day of service is intended to be an introduction to our NYC community for Fordham students seeking short-term\, direct service opportunities. The focus of the day is the engagement and interaction between the Fordham students and the Cristo Rey students who are part of their IFTJ delegation. The Bronx is Blooming provides a neutral backdrop and busy work for conversation and learning to take place between the participants. SUMMARY:Does Faith Have a Future? A Symposium on God\, Religion\, and the ‘Nones’
DESCRIPTION:“None of the above” is the fastest-growing religious identifier in the United States\, a category boosted by a surge of younger people. This generational shift is the greatest challenge facing religious communities\, and one with enormous implications for American society: the “Nones” have fewer social connections and less social capital than their parents and grandparents. \nWhat does this disaffiliation mean for the future of the U.S.? What does it mean for the future of faith? Who are the “Nones” anyway? Are they atheists? Agnostics? Just indifferent? “The ‘Meh’ Generation?” Or does their attitude point toward a new path for traditional religious communities? \nParticipants include: \nKaya Oakes has written widely on religion in the contemporary world\, including her book\, The Nones Are Alright: A New Generation of Seekers\, Believers\, and Those In Between. She writes for America\, Commonweal\, and other publications and websites. \nTara Isabella Burton is a New York-based novelist (Social Creature) who writes widely on religion. Her next book\, Strange Rites: New Religions for a Godless World\, will be published in spring 2020. \nRyan Burge\, an American Baptist Church pastor\, is an assistant professor of political science at Eastern Illinois University and has published widely in academic journals and popular news outlets about the next generation of believers—and nonbelievers.

SUMMARY:Orthodoxy in America Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Theological Education in the Twenty-First Century \nThe Very Rev. Dr. John Behr\nFather Georges Florovsky Distinguished Professor of Patristics\nSt. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary \n“Go and teach” has been a mandate for all Christians from the beginning\, being at the heart of spreading the Gospel. Yet the context in which this mandate is carried out continually changes\, always presenting new challenges\, especially in the 21st century. If previous centuries were torn apart\, as Edward Gibbon jested\, over an “iota” (the difference between homoousios and homoiousios)\, we face broader\, more profound\, and more disturbing challenges today. In a “post-truth” era\, riven by factionalism and polarization\, how do we teach the truth that sets us free and find the freedom for which we are set free? \nIn this year’s Orthodoxy in America Lecture\, Father Behr will explore the task before us\, that of continuing the past century’s renaissance of theological reflection and education\, which has taken place largely in the West but has deep roots in Eastern Orthodox history. The increasing contexts\, institutional homes\, and platforms in which Orthodox theology is taught offer us possibilities not envisioned before\, yet it is only by returning to “the Word delivered in the beginning” (St. Polycarp) that the coherence of theology can again be found and the teaching of theology flourish.

SUMMARY:Solidarity on Tap in San Diego: “Cry of Creation: Our Time to Act”
DESCRIPTION:Solidarity on Tap is a simple gathering for socializing and social justice. The Ignatian Solidarity Network\, Jesuit Volunteer Corps\, Jesuit Volunteer Corps Northwest\, Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University\, Boston College School of Theology and Ministry\, Jesuitical\, along with Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish and other local partners\, welcome all to Solidarity on Tap | San Diego. \nFood and beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) will be available for purchase. All are welcome (21 and over). \nAround 7:30 p.m.\, we will have a reflection titled “Cry of Creation: Our Time to Act\,” by the Rev. Jeanette Bragunier and Philip Petrie\, founding members of SanDiego350. \nWhat does it mean to be a good steward of God’s creation? Might our current ecological crisis be an opportunity to create a more sustainable and more spiritual civilization? How might each of us do more to move our culture in that direction? This talk will address these questions through the lens of our presenters’ activism with an emphasis on solutions both individual and collective. \nThe Rev. Jeanette Bragunier grew up in a small desert mining community in Arizona\, where she experienced the importance of community life\, something that has never left her. This core value of nurturing healthy community led to her passion of building a healthier and more sustainable planet. Her second vocation as a pastor has empowered her call to work through the theological lens that all life is sacred. She believes that as people of faith\, we are to work on behalf of creation in solidarity with people most affected by the ecological and economic damage posed by climate change. Jeanette is a United Methodist pastor currently serving as associate pastor at Mission Hills UMC\, and also serves as the coordinator for the Interfaith Coalition for Earth Justice. Her climate activism has involved developing a children’s group of Jane Goodall’s Roots and Shoots\, an adult Earthcare group. A co-founder and volunteer at SanDiego350\, she recently participated in “Engaging the Climate Crisis\,” a faith-based training experience. She has a bachelor’s degree in public relations from Northern Arizona University and a master’s in Christian leadership from Fuller Theological Seminary. Married to Charlie\, they have two young adult children\, Bella and Austin\, and their dog\, Coconut. They love to camp\, travel\, and serve together. \nPhilip Petrie is a founding member of SanDiego350\, an all-volunteer organization committed to action on climate change. As a member of SanDiego350’s Community Presentation Team\, he gives presentations on climate to diverse organizations around the San Diego area. Phil also attends St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral\, where he co-founded Simpler Living\, a creation care ministry. He is an artist\, working primarily in oils\, and has lived and exhibited in New York\, Chicago\, and Indiana. He currently lives in San Diego with his wife\, Mary Doak\, and daughter\, Sara. His foci on Christian spirituality\, the environment\, and the visual arts often intersect\, and invariably make his life richer.
