SUMMARY:The EU at 60: Is it Time to Bury the Dream?
DESCRIPTION:A Lecture by International Reporter Konstantly Gebert \nThe EU\, which was awarded the Nobel Peace prize just a few years ago\, was long considered the political success story of the planet. Pundits even wrote books about the 21st century being the European Century. Today\, shocked by the financial crisis and threats to the Euro\, a resurgent Russia on its Eastern borders\, a huge influx of refugees from the dramatically unstable South\, and growing discontent within its member states\, the EU feels like a relic of the past\, an Austria-Hungary that forgot it is dead. Is Brexit the final nail in its coffin\, or the final shock which will galvanize it into a comeback? \nAbout the Presenter\nKonstanty Gebert is an international reporter and columnist for Gazeta Wyborcza\, Poland’s biggest daily and an associate policy fellow at the European Council of Foreign Relations. He was a member of the anti-communist opposition movement and an organizer of the Jewish Flying University\, an underground group that met in secret to study and discuss Judaism and Jewish culture. The university was disbanded after martial law was declared in 1981\, and Gebert spent the subsequent decade working as an underground journalist. He has taught in Poland\, Israel\, and the United States. \nGebert is the author of more than ten book\, on subjects such as the Polish democratic transformation\, French policy toward Poland\, the Yugoslav wars\, the wars of Israel\, Torah commentary\, and post-war Polish Jewry. His essays have appeared in two dozen collections both in Poland and abroad\, and his articles have been published by newspapers around the world. \nThis is a joint event of the Gabelli School of Business and the Jewish Studies program at Fordham University. \nFor more information\, contact Magda Teter at 347-364-3472 or mteter@fordham.edu.
