SUMMARY:Career Conversation: Teaching at an Independent School
DESCRIPTION:GSAS Futures invites you to join Fordham Bronwen Durocher\, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of English\, and Judith Sheridan\, Ph.D.\, Associate Director for Evaluation and Accreditation at the New York State Association of Independent Schools\, for a conversation on teaching at an independent school. Incorporating a large body of private and parochial schools\, independent schools are often autonomous institutions that value creative and rigorous approaches to classroom instruction. Independent schools court individuals with advanced degrees\, including master’s and Ph.D.’s\, with an interest in applying their expertise to classroom teaching. State certification is not always a requirement for independent school teaching\, and schools that do require certification typically offer guidance and support for teachers to become certified. \nMs. Durocher\, who teaches at Riverdale Country School\, will describe her experience transitioning from graduate school into an independent school classroom\, along with her day-to-day experience teaching. Dr. Sheridan will also discuss her journey from university to secondary school teaching at an independent school. Having worked as the director of an independent school in Manhattan\, Dr. Sheridan hired a number of graduate students and will describe the traits that accompany ideal independent school candidates. \nCoffee and light refreshments will be served. Please RSVP to the event by e-mailing gsasfutures@fordham.edu.

Learn about how the United Nations addresses issues such as disarmament\, peace and security\, human rights\, and the Millennium Development Goals. \nSpeakers Bureau Briefing\nA United Nations expert will provide an in-depth look into the latest issues on their agenda. The goal of a briefing is to further an understanding of and an appreciation for the work of the United Nations. This provides an invaluable educational opportunity tailored specifically to our group. \nLunch in the Delegates Dining Room\nThe lunch buffet at the Delegates Dining Room (DDR) features culinary trends and classics that celebrate cultures from across the globe. Soups\, salads\, charcuterie plates\, international cheese boards\, main entrees\, fresh-carved meats\, and fish and seafood dishes are complemented by a freshly baked assortment of sweets at the enhanced bakery and dessert table. All dessert offerings are now baked by the United Nation’s new pastry chef. The DDR menu combines a strong focus on fresh\, local\, organic\, and/or sustainable produce\, fish\, and meats with a true commitment to the authentic flavors\, spices\, and preparation methods of its international cuisine. \nThe DDR requires guests to be dressed in proper business casual attire. No jeans\, sneakers\, or short pants will be permitted\, and jackets are preferred for men. \nPlease note: Due to new security rules\, all visitors over 18 years of age now require government-issued photo identification to enter United Nations Headquarters. Accepted forms of identification include passports\, driver’s licenses\, and national identity cards. \nFor security reasons\, children under 5 years of age are not permitted on tour. \nThis event costs $75 per person.
