SUMMARY:International Conference on Sustainable Cities
DESCRIPTION:Rigorous research related to sustainable cities is more important than ever\, and the questions scholars face are urgent: What is a sustainable city? What is the role of climate change in sustainable cities? What is the future of the sustainable city—and how can we best get there? \nIn a unique collaboration to help answer these questions\, three universities—Fordham\, Columbia\, and NYU—in the world’s greatest city are organizing a two-day interdisciplinary International Conference on Sustainable Cities. The conference will bring together leading scholars from a range of disciplines with policymakers\, business leaders\, and advocates to share insights and set a comprehensive research agenda for this vital subject. \nThe conference is free of charge and open to the public. However\, registration is required. \nYou can register and learn more on the conference’s website\, where you will also be able to view a complete conference program.

SUMMARY:Fordham-NYPL Lecture Series in Jewish Studies: Gil Ribak\, University of Arizona
DESCRIPTION:With the mass migration of Jews from Eastern Europe that began in 1881\, European Jewish immigrants encountered black Americans. They became their clientele and neighbors as these Eastern European Jews served as storeowners\, tavern keepers\, peddlers\, pawnbrokers\, and landlords in black neighborhoods. \nGil Ribak\, who teaches at the University of Arizona and will be a Fordham-NYPL Fellow in Jewish Studies\, will discuss the various ways in which Yiddish journalists and writers\, social workers\, educators\, intellectuals\, communal activist\, poets\, rabbis\, and union organizers portrayed African Americans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries\, a period that partially overlapped with the mass migration of Jews from Europe with the Great Migration of African Americans from the South.

SUMMARY:Commuter Appreciation Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Commuting Students Association’s annual Commuter Appreciation Reception (CAR). The event will feature a luncheon\, speeches by representatives of the Commuting Students Association and the Commuter Student Services staff\, and an awards ceremony. This year our keynote speaker is Chief Diversity Officer Rafael Zapata\, who will share his perspective on the challenges commuters face\, a perspective drawn from his work on college campuses as well as his time as a student commuter. Father Lito will also join us to give the blessing. \nTraditionally\, CAR served to recognize the efforts of CSA members\, with a special emphasis on Executive Board and graduating seniors. This year and moving forward\, the ceremony is open to commuter leaders all around campus\, who will be honored through the Exemplary Commuter Awards. These awards recognize the hard work of commuter leaders who continuously exhibit the ability to lead\, empower\, and inspire fellow students within and outside of CSA. You can nominate commuters you know for these awards! Commuters can be nominated for their leadership positions in clubs\, academics\, athletics\, or other creative outlets. \nThis event is supported by the Office for Student Involvement\, the Office for Multicultural Affairs\, and Campus Ministry.

SUMMARY:The Iceman Cometh\, Starring Denzel Washington
DESCRIPTION:About the Play\nFrank Rich of The New York Times raved\, “the word ‘masterwork’ is not invoked lightly. Eugene O’Neill’s tragic vision remains undiminished by time. The Iceman Cometh is a ferocious American classic that has lost none of its power to send one shaking into the middle of the night.” Denzel Washington\, fresh off his extraordinary sell-out runs in both Fences and A Raisin in the Sun\, comes back to the Main Stem in “the greatest American play” (New York Magazine) by “the greatest American playwright” (The Washington Post). \nEvent Details\nJoin Joseph M. McShane\, S.J.\, president of Fordham University\, for this special evening on Broadway\, featuring Fordham’s own Denzel Washington\, FCLC ’77. \nBefore heading to the show\, we’ll gather for dinner at Etc. Etc. Restaurant. This is a great opportunity to meet some of your fellow alumni! We’ll also have the chance to hear from a special guest speaker with a Fordham connection. \nTickets are $235 per person and include both dinner and the show. Our tickets are in the Orchestra section and will be handed out during dinner. \nThe guest speaker is TBA. This information will be emailed to you one week prior to the event.

SUMMARY:Carousel on Broadway
DESCRIPTION:About the Musical\n“One of the most hallowed works of the American stage” (The New York Times) returns to Broadway for the first time in more than two decades. Rodgers & Hammerstein’s timeless musical Carousel comes to life in a new production starring Tony-nominee Joshua Henry\, Tony-winner Jessie Mueller\, and Renée Fleming in her first-ever appearance in a Broadway musical. \nSet in a small New England factory town\, Carousel describes the tragic romance between a troubled carnival barker and the young woman who gives up everything for him. Elevated to an epic scale with a sweeping musical score and incandescent ballet sequences\, this story of passion\, loss\, and redemption introduced Broadway to a new manner of musical drama — one that “set the standard for the 20th century musical” (Time Magazine) and would captivate theatergoers for generations to come. \nEvent Details\nBefore heading to the show\, we’ll gather for dinner at a restaurant near the theater. This is a great opportunity to meet some of your fellow alumni! We’ll also have the chance to hear from a special guest speaker with a Fordham connection. \nTickets are $210 per person and include both dinner and the show. Our tickets are in the Orchestra section and will be handed out during dinner. \nThe restaurant and guest speaker are TBA. This information will be emailed to you one week prior to the event.
