SUMMARY:Physics & Engineering Physics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Elisa Chisari\, Ph.D.\, Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) Research Fellow\, University of Oxford\, will present “A Next Era of Precision Cosmology: Challenges and Opportunities.” \n69% of the energy density of the universe today is in the form of a mysterious “dark energy” component\, which seems to be driving its accelerated expansion. Chisari will describe her efforts to build and test models of the large-scale structure of the universe using a combination of analytical theory\, cosmological simulations and existing observational data sets. Looking ahead to the next decade\, she will describe how we construct and test cosmological model predictions for their application to one of the major upcoming dark energy experiments\, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope.

SUMMARY:CLIP Book Talk: The Blockchain and the New Architecture of Trust by Kevin Werbach
DESCRIPTION:Why are the world’s most powerful companies and governments excited about a technology beloved by criminals and radicals? And why do people invest their money—or their trust—in mysterious cryptocurrencies seemingly based on nothing? \nIn an era when trust in institutions of all kinds is collapsing\, the blockchain offers a new hope: shared ledgers of information that no one controls but everyone can believe. Since its emergence a decade ago with the cryptocurrency Bitcoin\, the blockchain has spawned hundreds of companies\, billions of dollars of investment\, and adoption by companies ranging from the New York Stock Exchange to Walmart. Yet it remains wildly misunderstood. \nWharton professor Kevin Werbach offers the first in-depth\, balanced analysis of the blockchain’s true potential\, as well as its limitations and dangers. He maps the often-confusing landscape\, and shows how a technology resting on foundations of mutual mistrust can become trustworthy. Surprisingly for a technology widely associated with illegality\, fraud\, and distrust of governments\, the path to trusted blockchains runs through governance\, regulation\, and law. \nWith interest in blockchains and cryptocurrencies growing rapidly\, those who appreciate the new architecture of trust will be positioned to capture the benefits and avoid the dangers they generate. \nFor questions\, please email clip@fordham.edu.

SUMMARY:Tour of the Louis Armstrong House Museum
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour exploring how Louis Armstrong lived! He was one of the most recognizable entertainers in the world when he chose the working-class neighborhood of Corona\, Queens\, to be his home in 1943. “And you take this neighborhood we live in\,” Louis said in 1964. “We’re right out here with the rest of the colored folk and the Puerto Ricans and Italians and the Hebrew cats. We don’t need to move out in the suburbs to some big mansion with lots of servants and yardmen and things.” \nThe Louis Armstrong House Museum sustains and promotes the cultural\, historical\, and humanitarian legacy of Louis Armstrong by preserving and interpreting Armstrong’s house and grounds\, collecting and sharing archival materials that document Armstrong’s life and legacy\, and presenting public programs such as exhibits\, concerts\, lectures\, and film screenings. The museum seeks to educate and inspire people of all ages\, origins\, and locations. \nPlease note: The entire ground floor (which includes the Welcome Center\, Museum Store\, exhibit area\, and restroom) of the museum is wheelchair-accessible. The historic house tour requires the ability to climb two sets of steep stairs and to stand for 40 minutes. Visitors that are unable to take the tour receive a virtual tour instead. \nAfter the tour\, we’ll eat lunch at a nearby restaurant. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet some of your fellow alumni! \nThis event costs $60 per person\, which includes the tour and lunch. \nAn email reminder with meeting details will be sent to all registrants one week prior to the event. Please reach out if you have any questions\, and we hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:L.E.A.P: Invest in the Future of Social Work
DESCRIPTION:L.E.A.P.\nlead.empower.act.with purpose \nJoin the students of L.E.A.P for a night of networking and empowerment! \nAndrew Hill and his sister\, Dr. Joanne Hill-Powell\, started a company called LiftEd\, a startup that provides teachers and related service professionals a mobile platform to monitor behaviors and interventions\, refine instruction\, and share progress for students ages 3-22 with learning disabilities. It’s an incredible and innovative platform within the tech space that is used in schools and therapy centers across three states in the U.S. and in Europe. \nAndrew has his M.B.A. and was named to the 2018 Forbes “30 Under 30” list. How impressive! His sister\, Dr. Hill-Powell\, is a behavioral analyst. The mission and vision behind LiftEd directly aligns with L.E.A.P.’s mission to think outside of the box about different opportunities. I anticipate that our students will appreciate hearing about their work\, in addition to having another networking opportunity.
