DESCRIPTION:Filmed over 21 years\, Sabbath Queen follows Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie’s epic journey as the dynastic heir of 38 generations of Orthodox rabbis including the Chief Rabbis of Israel. He is torn between rejecting and embracing his destiny and becomes a drag-queen rebel\, a queer bio-dad\, and the founder of Lab/Shul—an everybody-friendly\, God-optional\, artist-driven\, pop-up experimental congregation. Sabbath Queen joins Amichai on a lifelong quest to creatively and radically reinvent religion and ritual\, challenge patriarchy and supremacy\, champion interfaith love\, and stand up for peace. The film interrogates what Jewish survival means in a difficult rapidly changing 21st century. \nSandi DuBowski is the director/producer of Sabbath Queen\, Trembling before G-D\, Tomboychik\, Producer of A Jihad for Love and co-producer of Budrus. His award-winning work has screened at Sundance\, Berlin\, Tribeca and Toronto Film Festivals. In 2020\, he was invited to become a member of the Documentary Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. \nBrett Krutzsch\, a scholar of religion and LGBTQ politics in the United States\, is the associate director of the Center for Religion and Media at NYU and editor of its award-winning online magazine\, The Revealer.

SUMMARY:Conversations with Humanitarians: Eileen McCarthy
DESCRIPTION:Eileen McCarthy\, a humanitarian professional with more than 13 years of experience in field offices and headquarters\, is CARE International’s UN Representative in New York. She engages UN policymakers and member states on gender equality in humanitarian settings and Women\, Peace\, and Security (WPS)\, while supporting advocacy for partners\, especially women-led organizations. Previously a CARE USA Humanitarian Advocacy Advisor covering Sudan\, Ethiopia\, and Gaza\, McCarthy has worked with UNICEF\, NRC\, Save the Children\, co-authoring two reports on conflict’s impact on children. She holds degrees from LSE and Fordham. \nStudents will learn about CARE’s work and McCarthy’s work advocating with the United Nations system in New York. You’ll also acquire some information and skills on how to navigate your career and network with fellow students and McCarthy.

DESCRIPTION:“Psychoanalyzing American Jews: Max Weinreich\, YIVO\, and the Yiddish Unconscious” \nIt is well known that Max Weinreich\, co-founder of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research\, produced a psychoanalytic study of Polish Jewish youth. \nThis lecture by Naomi Seidman (with response by Seth Aronson\, PsyD) will focus rather on his never-published psychoanalysis of American Jews in their relation to YIVO and Yiddish\, which he spoke of as the “collective unconscious” of the Jewish American psyche. \nNaomi Seidman is the Chancellor Jackman Professor of the Arts in the Department for the Study of Religion and the director of the Centre for Diaspora and Transnational Studies at the University of Toronto. She is the author of five books and a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship. \nSeth Aronson\, Psy.D. is fellow\, director of admissions\, and training and supervising analyst at the William Alanson White Institute. He is program chair for the American Psychoanalytic Association meetings and on the faculty of Yeshivat Chovevei Torah.

Is it even appropriate? Yet\, in the most difficult times\, there is also a deep need for joy. As Maya Angelou once said\, “We need joy as we need air.” \nSpeaking of joy does not mean disregarding sadness and pain. In fact\, joy and pain often go together. In Jewish tradition\, joy is very frequently tied to mourning and suffering. There is often an “Oy\, vey” aspect in an experience of joy. Sometimes someone’s joy clashes with someone else’s suffering and pain. Sometimes joy is an act of resistance. Sometimes joy is a manifestation of resilience and recovery. \nThe exhibit was curated by Erez DeGolan\, Amy Levine-Kennedy\, and Magda Teter.
