SUMMARY:Exhibit: “Oy\, Joy! Can We Talk About (Jewish) Joy?”
DESCRIPTION:“Oy\, Joy! Can We Talk About (Jewish) Joy?” explores themes of joy through the work of contemporary artists and historical artifacts from Fordham’s Special Collections. We bring together in conversation works of artists  Maira Kalman\, Deborah Kass\, Jacqueline Kott-Wolle\, Simone Levy Greenwood\, Holly Markhoff\, ES23\, and Nina Talbot\, along with the textile art of Sharon and Jerry Goldberg. \nIn a world filled with pain and suffering\, tormented by wars\, climate crisis\, pandemics\, and disruption\, is it possible to talk about joy? Is it even appropriate? Yet\, in the most difficult times\, there is also a deep need for joy. As Maya Angelou once said\, “We need joy as we need air.” \nSpeaking of joy does not mean disregarding sadness and pain. In fact\, joy and pain often go together. In Jewish tradition\, joy is very frequently tied to mourning and suffering. There is often an “Oy\, vey” aspect in an experience of joy. Sometimes someone’s joy clashes with someone else’s suffering and pain. Sometimes joy is an act of resistance. Sometimes joy is a manifestation of resilience and recovery. \nThe exhibit was curated by Erez DeGolan\, Amy Levine-Kennedy\, and Magda Teter. It is made possible by the Hadassah Ruth Weiner Fund for Jewish Art at Fordham\, the Henry S. Miller Judaica Research Collection Endowment. \n“Oy\, Joy” will be on view at the Walsh Family Library on the 4th floor in the Henry S. Miller Judaica Research Room and in the Special Collections and Archives from Octotber 15\, 2026\, through February 2027.

SUMMARY:A Virtual Tour of Woodlawn Cemetery with David Herszenson
DESCRIPTION:One of the many Hebrew terms describing a cemetery is bet mo’ed le-khol ḥai (“the house appointed for all living” from a verse in Job 30:23). In this webinar\, linked to our walking tours focusing on Jewish Life in the Bronx\, we will explore a slice of American Jewish history preserved in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx\, which counts among its permanent residents scions of American Jewish life: Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia\, composer Irving Berlin\, the Lehman family\, and many others. \nDavid Herszenson is a physician living in the Bronx and a trained tour guide with a love of the Bronx and its different neighborhoods. He has been doing walking tours of the Jewish sites in the Bronx for Fordham’s Center for Jewish Studies in the last three years as part of Fordham’s Bronx Jewish History Project.

SUMMARY:Cultivating Curiosity in Chronic Illness Care
DESCRIPTION:Completion of this class will result in the receipt of two and one-half (2.5) continuing education hours. \nAs treatments advance\, more people are living longer with serious illnesses that in the past would have resulted in significantly limited lifespans. This interactive class will invite us to explore the impact of how illnesses that even recently might have been perceived as a “death sentence” might now be “managed” as a “chronic illness” requires adjustments for all parties – patients\, their care partners\, families\, and clinicians. Living with the knowledge that treatments may be needed for years (or perhaps decades)\, and that any “twinge” may be an early indicator of progression can challenge even the most resilient. Health social workers play an important role in normalizing concerns\, managing expectations\, exploring the influence of culture\, supporting adaptive coping\, and in identifying resources to address the impact of social drivers on health. Yet\, unfortunately\, these are precisely the patients most likely to be missed with our referral “triggers.” We’ll discuss the importance of comprehensive screening\, assessments and the cultivation of curiosity in chronic illness care so that we might better serve this vulnerable population.
