DESCRIPTION:Lecture delivered by Prasad Subramanian\, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research\, Pune\, India \nAbstract:\nWhen someone sprays perfume at one end of a room and we smell it within seconds\, we are experiencing turbulence in action. Or when we experience atmospheric turbulence during a flight! Turns our turbulence in fluid flows is the norm rather than the exception. This phenomenon has fascinated thinkers dating back to Leonardo da Vinci. We will outline basic elements of our current understanding of turbulence in fluids. We will then proceed to illustrate some manifestations of turbulence in space physics and discuss how much remains to be learnt. \nAbout Prasad Subramanian:\nAs a professor of physics at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research\, Pune\, India\, Prasad Subramanian works on plasma astrophysics and space weather using a mix of data analysis and theoretical modeling. He is interested in the terrestrial effects of Earth-directed solar coronal mass ejections. Examples include geomagnetic storms\, enhanced drag on Earth orbiting satellites and a host of other effects.

Yeats’s classic play\, The Dreaming of the Bones\, now transformed to a chamber opera composed by Fordham Distinguished Professor Lawrence Kramer. The renowned new music ensemble Contemporaneous will perform the work in a semi-staged production conducted by David Bloom. Lawrence Kramer is a nine-time award-winning composer whose music has been performed throughout the US and Europe. He is also a prolific author\, whose latest book\, Experience: A History\, will be published in October. \nAdmission is free to Fordham students\, faculty\, staff\, and their guests.

DESCRIPTION:With behind the scenes access to the largest litigation involving drinking water in American history\, the award-winning documentary How to Poison A Planet investigates how the use of a product as seemingly harmless as firefighting foam has resulted in the contamination of communities all over the world. \n​In this roundtable conversation featuring clips from the documentary\, filmmaker Katrina McGowan joins litigator Gary Doulgas and environmental advocates to explore the legal fight\, the environmental consequences\, and the creative process — with the help of Mark Ruffalo — that brought it to the screen. \n​This story about one of the most widespread environmental disasters in history spans the globe from the heart of New York City to a small First Nations community in Australia. \nView the trailer here. \nFeaturing: \n​Katrina McGowan\, director/producer of How to Poison a Planet\, via Zoom \n​Gary Douglas\, Douglas & London\, trial counselor in 3M PFAS lawsuit \n​Briana Carbajal\, WE ACT for Environmental Justice \nSharif Mowlabocus\, PhD\, professor and department chair of Communication and Media Studies at Fordham\, will moderate the roundtable discussion with questions from the audience. \n​The event is free but registration is required. SUMMARY:Book Talk: The Fiction of the State by Ofer Dynes
DESCRIPTION:Join Ofer Dynes (Columbia University) and Larry Wolff (New York University) for a conversation about Dynes’s new book\, The Fiction of the State: The Partitions of Poland and the Beginning of Modern Jewish Literature. The book argues that modern Jewish fiction emerged as a way to imagine new political possibilities and navigate a rapidly changing legal landscape. It places Jewish authors alongside state officials\, censors\, nobles\, Hasidic leaders\, and spies\, all of whom participated in different ways in producing “the fiction of the state”: bureaucratic prose about Jews for the state\, literary fiction about the state for Jews\, or literature that sought to expose the state as fiction. Together\, Wolff and Dynes will discuss the transformation of Eastern Europe during the age of revolutions\, and reflect on how it shaped the relationship between politics and fiction and prompted the rise of Modern Jewish literature. \nOfer Dynes is the Leonard Kaye Assistant Professor of Hebrew and Comparative Literature in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at Columbia University. His research has been supported by the Posen Society of Fellows\, the Center for Jewish History\, the Leibniz Institute for Jewish History and Culture – Simon Dubnow\, the Austrian Science Fund\, and YIVO\, among other institutions. His articles have appeared in Prooftexts\, Jewish Social Studies\, Eastern European Jewish Affairs\, and AJS Review. His first book\, The Fiction of the State: The Partitions of Poland and the Beginning of Modern Jewish Literature (Stanford University Press\, 2026)\, received the Jordan Schnitzer First Book Publication Award. In 2027\, he will be a research fellow at the Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies. \nLarry Wolff is the Julius Silver Professor of History at New York University. At NYU he has previously served as executive director of the Remarque Institute and as co-director of NYU Florence at Villa La Pietra. His most recent book is The Shadow of the Empress: Fairy-Tale Opera and the End of the Habsburg Monarchy (2023). He is also the author of Woodrow Wilson and the Reimagining of Eastern Europe (2020) and Disunion Within the Union: The Uniate Church and the Partitions of Poland (2019)\, The Singing Turk: Ottoman Power and Operatic Emotions on the European Stage from the Siege of Vienna to the Age of Napoleon (2016)\, Paolina’s Innocence: Child Abuse in Casanova’s Venice (2012)\, The Idea of Galicia: History and Fantasy in Habsburg Political Culture (2010)\, Venice and the Slavs: The Discovery of Dalmatia in the Age of Enlightenment (2001)\, Inventing Eastern Europe: The Map of Civilization on the Mind of the Enlightenment (1994)\, The Vatican and Poland in the Age of the Partitions (1988)\, and Postcards from the End of the World: Child Abuse in Freud’s Vienna (1988). He writes frequently about opera\, publishing essays and reviews in The Times Literary Supplement\, The New York Review of Books\, The New York Times\, the New Yorker\, The Los Angeles Review of Books\, and the Hudson Review. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Key findings of CHH-Lancet Commission on Health\, Conflict and Displacement
DESCRIPTION:Chi-Chi Undie\, a senior associate and technical director within the Population Council’s International Programs Division and the Regional Representative of the organization’s office in Kenya\, will present key findings and conclusions of the CHH-Lancet Commission on Health\, Conflict and Displacement’s recent report. \nThe CHH-Lancet Commission on Health\, Conflict\, and Forced Displacement is a collaboration between the Johns Hopkins Center for Humanitarian Health and The Lancet\, launched in early 2024. Its primary goal is to tackle the rising mortality and health challenges associated with conflict and forced displacement worldwide\, while proposing systemic reforms to the humanitarian system to make it more effective\, accountable\, and inclusive. The Commission recently published a landmark report calling for an urgent transformation of the global humanitarian system. The report rethinks and reimagines the strategies\, governance\, and delivery modes of humanitarian aid by proposing systemic changes and bold recommendations that influence global humanitarian and health agendas\, and encourage collective action. The Commission strives to challenge existing power structures in humanitarian health and beyond\, and to amplify the voices of underrepresented populations in decision-making processes. \nGuests will engage with and learn how to radically rethink policy\, funding\, and practical approaches to our response to conflict\, forced displacement\, and\, more broadly\, humanitarian crises.
