SUMMARY:Race\, Slavery\, and the Sacraments in America’s First See
DESCRIPTION:Since colonial times\, slavery has been a part of the history of the American Catholic Church. Colonial parishes included enslaved people and slaveholders among their congregants\, and priests held many people in bondage to finance their missionary work. \nThe nation’s independence and the establishment of its first diocese in 1789 did not change that. Church authorities in America’s first see\, including its first bishop\, John Carroll\, owned enslaved people and ran plantations that helped sustain the church’s parishes and schools. That same authority extended into the sacraments themselves. Sacramental records from some of the oldest parishes in the diocese show that enslavers could shape the access enslaved people had to baptism\, marriage\, and the sacraments that prepared them for death. \nThis talk will explore how the early American Catholic Church accommodated slaveholders’ power\, creating sacramental barriers that placed the interests of slaveholders over enslaved people’s relationship with God.
