Need to breathe new life into your professional journey? Check out these tips from Jerry D. Goldstein, the alumni relations specialist with Fordham’s Career Center.
1. Seek Out Resources
Use career exploration tools like O*NET (available to Fordham alumni through Handshake, a job and internship database) and Forage, which offers virtual job simulations.
2. Leverage Your Network
Fordham is always going to be one of your best networks, Goldstein tells alumni. He recommends using the RamConnect platform for support, connections, and opportunities.
3. Develop New Skills
College courses, continuing education classes, and free online resources can help deepen your understanding of a potential career. If you’re employed, find opportunities at your current job to gain the skills you need. And consider pursuing certifications from companies like Microsoft or Salesforce, especially if your interest lies in emerging fields like artificial intelligence.
4. Rebrand Yourself
Craft a compelling narrative to explain your career shift, addressing common concerns such as leaving a job too quickly. With a little thought and planning, your story can demonstrate that your skills are transferable. Tell that story quickly and succinctly. The online service Jobscan can be a good resource for creating a compelling LinkedIn profile.
5. Pursue Your Passion
When you’re passionate about your work, you’re going to be much better at it. Keep that in mind when deciding what you want to do next.
