The play by historian-cum-playwright Charles L. Mee is an exuberant take on the age-old battle between the sexes in which 50 brides flee their 50 grooms and seek refuge in a villa on the coast of Italy. A modern re-telling of one of the Western world’s oldest plays, The Danaids by Aeschylus, the zany play was described by the New York Timesas “an MGM musical in Technicolor, a circus and, believe it, a Greek tragedy.”
Big Love premiered at the 2000 Humana Festival of New American Plays in Louisville, Ky., and has since been produced around the country and at a number of colleges and universities.
Suzanne Agins, MFA, artistic associate at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts, is directing Fordham’s production. She is a member of the Lincoln Center Director’s Lab and the Women’s Project Directors Forum.
The cast is made up of students who are members of the Fordham University Theatre Company. The company produces all four Mainstage productions each season, and 15 to 20 studio theatre productions.
