NEW YORK (December 8, 2000) – Fordham University and Marymount College, Tarrytown, have agreed to a consolidation of their two institutions, effective July 1, 2002. The agreement to consolidate includes a management contract by which Fordham University will provide academic and administrative support for Marymount College during the remaining 18 months that precede the effective date of consolidation. The Rev. Joseph A. O’Hare, S.J., president of Fordham University, will become president of Marymount College, effective January 15, 200l, replacing Anne Slattery, who will remain a member of a newly constituted Marymount Board. “The agreement to consolidate our two institutions,” Father O’Hare said, “is grounded in the similar aspirations and educational missions of two Catholic institutions of higher education, who seek to combine complementary strengths in order to preserve and promote their distinctive religious and intellectual traditions.” For 20 years Fordham’s Graduate Center at Tarrytown has offered courses given by Fordham’s Graduate School of Education, Graduate School of Business Administration and Graduate School of Social Service. “Our new partnership with Marymount College provides an opportunity to expand these programs and develop stronger relationships between our graduate programs at Tarrytown and the undergraduate programs of the College,” O’Hare said. The Tarrytown campus will be known as the Marymount Campus of Fordham University. While Marymount College has experienced a strong increase in enrollment in recent years, President Slattery pointed out that small colleges face daunting financial challenges. The consolidation with Fordham University “represents an experiment in a new model of a Catholic women’s college, one that can benefit from the institutional strengths of a major Catholic university while maintaining the character of a small residential college,” Slattery said. Founded by the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary in 1907, Marymount College is a women’s liberal arts college in the Catholic tradition. Located in Tarrytown, N.Y. Marymount College enrolls approximately 900 students and offers bachelor’s and associate’s degree programs. Marymount is dedicated to the education, advancement and empowerment of women.
